Long story short, I inherited a large lot of joysticks ( the flight sim types, not the arcade type ). Some pretty fancy ones in there. Most of them will probably end up for sale on Ebay but I still gotta test them. And then will likely keep one or two for myself.
I have never been much into flight sims but I really loved Nova Logic Comanche back in the days, and an old game called Mantis. Too a lesser extend I recall trying a game called Freespace 2 at some point and thinking it was pretty good but really I dont know much about those game and what little I know is very dated.
I feel kind of motivated about playing a good one now, plus getting to try all those joysticks. Any suggestions? I am looking for something rather modern. I still have Comanche 4 CD somewhere but that is like 12 years old. I favor helicopter and space simulator over Plane and jets simulator. I also tend to favor a more Arcadish game over an obsessively realistic one.
Aahhhgg! I just got X3 the gold box and I would only recommend it if you got a modd or made one your self, its a really good-bad game.
If you play without modification then you will be floating around in a slow ass ship with, and I quote "toilet paper shields and a pop gun" for hours or days until you get a bigger and still slower ship that is over balanced.
this really sums up my feelings for X3 base game: http://apricotmappingservice.com/unbalanced.html
when I'm done MODDING it I will love it and so will you if you choose to, untill then its a great idea for a game that's over complicated to the point of not being fun. IMHO.

Or, if you actually like being challenged, just get XTM. It's actually harder than vanilla.
I played X3 Reunion completely unmodded first, to see what it was like before getting the X-tended Mod. Your starting Buster is an M4(standard fighter versus light(M5) or heavy (M3) with more than ample firepower for, with excellent flying skills, taking down pirate, xenon and khak invaders. If you do combat skillfully, contrary to Apricotslice's claim(nothing against the guy, but he basically wants to be some galactic hero flying around in a super ship) you can really kick ass in your starting ship. I was dropping M5's and M4's in groups of three and four until I captured a pirate version Buster that was faster and had more firepower at the cost of a third of it's shielding. At this point, I switched ships, sold my original, and started dropping M3's in groups of 3 and 4. I did die occasionally, but that's what the save function is for.
Between capping pirates, the odd trade of opportunity, and doing missions, you can make enough money for your first ore mine in several hours time. If you read the conveniently available community made guide to X3, it's not at all overly complicated.
Is it deep? Can you play a long game? Yes. No one would find it interesting if you could simply start the game with the best ship you'll be able to get(oh look, X Rebirth!) and just curb stomp the enemy pilots like they're part of a swarm you fight against as you run through a level to get to the boss. You're not playing levels that get successively harder. You're living in an open universe.
If you run through the campaign, you're set up to build a nice little empire by the end of it. You'll have excellent credentials with the Argon and be well on your way to being a major economic power with your own mines and trade ships. Care for the empire well, and you can make a couple million an hour.
^After a very long time and much planning and unfun screens and number crunching in a overly realistic game you could make alot of money in factories, yes.
As for the skill in a crapy ship, I was immediately a great pilot and after a few hours I could shake 2 wasp missiles while in a dog fight with four M5s WITH a M6 spraying lasers like crazy and not have my shields fall. Truth.
But in the end X just made me want to cry. There's to much micro management and we have to pay for basic things like being able to save the game! And giving orders to fleets while in combat without the right software is futile and it's difficult even if you do. The morale of the story is if you want something done right you have to modd it yourself.
You only have to pay to save the game in space (while flying). You can save the game for free while docked.
I laughed at this hysterically in PUBLIC when I heard this! Do you have any idea how crazy that sounds? Its not excusable under any circumstance to pay to saveyour game Parrotmath...maybe that would make sense if you weren't using parrot math!
Save scumming is considered an exploitative practice in gaming for a reason. I found it quite nice that salvage insurance let you save scum only if you paid through the nose for it. There are plenty of structured save methods in games. Find a TBS with tactical combat that lets you save mid combat in case you make a mistake.
The vast amount of information contained in an X3 save results in a significant pause when that save triggers, it was an excellent decision to make auto-save hit on station entry and not at regular intervals where it could potentially get you killed. The lack of manual saving in space being insanity is a less than rationally formed opinion.
X is not for the instant gratification crowd (well except for rebirth). Great things have small beginnings.
I've seen worse in games... I've played games where saving your game was not an option ever. So, you had to play until you beat the game or just gave up. So, using in game currency to save the game in space is no big deal. But, I play hardcore only in X3... so I can save my game in space for free, just can't die otherwise I lose the entire progress.
Ahh, suicidal squid (you're ballsy). You should always expect more and better from games and in life though. Sure it can be worse your right, but don't accept it.
Use the script editor in the game as a alternative, you will learn some code and have a fu$k load more fun. You can then declare war on the split (my favorite hobby) or everyone...
