The ship designer is out now in the the alpha 2.0 patch, so when have a that ship designed feel free to post it here and so others can see what kind of cool things you can build with it.
The Omnipotant, my new huge Alterian ship.
Assault transport, again based on the template
Light fighter. In game fluff would be that the design was a rushed response to meeting the Drengin by turning scouts into combat vessels.
Heavy fighter.
Edit: removed broken image links
I like all the new ships!
The Sisko, I like your designs--I love asymmetrical ships, and your awesome scout reminded me that I forgot to post an asymmetrical ship that I had built a week or so ago. I'll post it in a bit.
Admerial_Bob, I'm really liking what I'm seeing! Cool stuff.
I don't know what to say to you, Ed... I like your dragon's teeth(?). I did have a good laugh--I hope that's alright.
Peregrine--the Omnipotent has a pretty wicked look... pretty intimidating. I like.
Now I feel the urge to design something...
trumpeter87 he's animated too, tries to bite. I actually can't wait to see it in the battle viewer with all those rays mounted inside his mouth fire. I'm just amazed at what we can do with the ship designer. We have only had it a few months and look at what we are turning out, and that is with about half the parts GC2 has. Just think we have at least 4 more civs worth of parts coming.
Right!? Pretty awesome--major kudos to the development team! I was looking back at some of my old GCII designs and they just pale in comparison (and I thought they were so awesome at the time). I do miss some of my favorite pieces from GCII, but there are so many better components now, and with more to come, I cannot complain.
And we can make our own using the export tool--which I did for my latest ST inspired frigate (the wing sections have the component shown below, which was modeled after a similar piece from GCII):
Anyhow. Here's my little unnamed asymmetrical fighter:
The Omnipotant ship is awesome!! I like the rest of the ships too that have been display the last few pages!!
Keep up the good work ALL!!!
I was inspired by Edlander to create my own dragon:
TROGDOR!!!!
Trogdor.
way cool!!!!!!!!
I still haven't been able to get the ships to rotate in the designer. Tried every combination of shift click, click-mouse wheel, ctl-mouse-wheel, and so on. What the heck am I doing wrong?
To turn ship 360* in any direction click and HOLD DOWN scroll wheel on mouse, To move ship left or right click and HOLD DOWN left mouse button.
Do any of you take requests? You all clearly have much more talent and patience than I do.
I wish I could make something like this:
or this:
Most of the ships I design end up being too slender and flimsy-looking and I really like the bulky look for the larger ship types. Also, I can't get those curved fronts and sides to work properly for the life of me.
So basically you want a ship that resembles star ships from Star Gate SG1 and Atlantis, Right?
I don't know where they're from - haven't seen either of those shows. I just thought the vessels in the pictures looked like what I'd like to make but don't have the talent for. If they are from those shows then yes.
I have tried the ship designer too (obviously, it's fun), but I also have the problem of not being able to design what I have in my mind. Similarly, I have no drawing skills (I can picture many things in my mind, but none of them accurately make it to paper).
One of the problems is that I get overwhelmed in the many different parts. They're all numbered, ok, but that's just about all the information you have. If you want to add an antenna to something, it's fairly easy (there are only two or three of them and they're recognizable), but if you want that one specific piece of hull to add to the ship, to make it look wider, or higher, then there's a chance you're looking for it for it for a long time, because you can't see it in the large group of them but when you add it, you find out that it doesn't look right after all or that it actually wasn't the hull part you were looking for.
My proposed solution to this would be to add a new type of sorting, next to the option of sorting on size or on number (that thing is very useful if you want to change a design, so when you have a reference from the list of things that are already added to the ship). Have us sort on the ship "type". There can be a type for wings, engines and hull pieces. It makes searching for things a lot easier.
The other problem more likely has to do with the experience I have with the ship designer, although the user friendliness can be improved on more parts than just a new way to sort stuff (and it probably will, considering that this is the beta). Anyway, my plan is to make my own version of a star destroyer, because the biggest flaw I see with the Star Wars ones, is that they have obvious weak points and that the laser cannons are too small to be seen, while the lasers can do a lot of damage.
I'm not that far obviously (otherwise I wouldn't have made a post this long), but for now I'll have to settle with my own version of a blockade runner, with lots of laser guns and lots of engines (although for the game mechanics I should have gotten extra hyperdrives, a move radius of 8 is just not enough for something that's supposed to appear, blow a hole in a blockade and then cruise through it. More screenshots to follow:
Plasma wolf, at first all the pieces are a little overwhelming but after you have made a couple of ships everything becomes pretty familiar. On my first two ships I just put pieces down and stretched them around to see what I could do with them, I'd recommend doing the same, it gets you pretty familiar with all the pieces. One of the things I like alot about the ship designer is that any price can be anything you want and you can combine them to create anything you want. While it might be useful to have a tab for antennas, its equally useful to see all the pieces so if you see another piece that might be good for a base or amplifier you can just grab it instead of swapping through tabs.
While technically they aren't ships, they go on them. My turrets.
ed those are some awesome turrets man! really digging #3 in the first row and #1 in the third row. you have inspired me.
Alright guys this is my first Asymmetric ship, give me your honest opinion but go easy as this is my first one. I really enjoy the front on this one and I am going to use it on a colony ship as well because it fits with the idea I have perfectly.
What do you guys think about the fin on the right side? I think I like it, not sure if its a bit too much though.
Wanderer Class Survey Ship
Space, the final hexagon. Designed to wander the cosmos and survey new worlds and lost treasures. The wanderers massive sensor range also makes surveying hostile space easy from afar. I.A.N marines already know the ideal locations to plant the empires flag on hostile worlds thanks to the surveying power of the Wanderer Class.
I really like the ship Admiral Bob. I have tried asymmetrical ships and haven't been happy with any of them.
Esthetically it is cool. From an engineering standpoint, I think it would fly in circles.
And that from a guy with a dragon ship that breathes plasma
Cool stuff Admerial_Bob. I really like the backward D-shaped gap between the fuselage and the wing. That notch in the main hull section gives the whole design a lot of character.
The great thing about no air resistance is that this kind of imbalance can be fairly easily compensated for, especially if there are thrusters in multiple locations.
