I remember when I got an E-Mail from Stardock giving a discount on the founders edition of this game. Boy am I beating myself up for not taking on that offer. I chose not to become a founder until now because at the time I just didn't have enough money to spare for it and I wasn't all that into the GalCiv 2. Then I gave it a nice long fair try to impress me and it really did! I looked all over the site but I can't find where you can become a supporter. I know I can become an elite founder, but c'mon now, I'm not THAT rich! Anyway I'm wondering are they still offering that to people, or am I now going to have to wait for the full release to buy it?
All that's available right now is the Founders Elite which is $99.99.
It's $100 of sweet, sweet victory.
If you have 100 and see yourself wanting the DLCs, Expansions etc then it is worth it.
The Alpha should start the 27 th so react fast.
If you don't want the elite edition, you will have to wait.
How long do we have until the Founders Elite option disappears? I just recently came across this game and I'm keeping track of it to see whether I want to commit $100 for the alpha.
Also, why isn't my avatar showing? Strange.
It does that sometimes. Re-upload it and then make a new comment, it should work fine. I encountered the same problem on the old Galactic Civilizations 2 forums.
And fyi, Stardock has not stated when the Elite package will be out of sale, but you presumably have at least a month.
Ah, okay. Thanks!
It will remain for the time being, but just as we did for the Founders discount, we'll give a heads up before it is discontinued.
Do founders automatically get the full game upon release? The description doesn't say.
Yep. You're buying the game and getting early access along with it.
Elite Founders also get expansions & DLC.
I thought it was a really good deal. Your getting the base game plus every expansion + DLC that comes out AND Alpha/Beta access all in a one time purchase. I wasn't going to wait to buy any of that when it was on sale so $99 for everything is very worth it for me.
Why i can´t buy it on steam?
IIRC the game will be available from steam and you would get a steam key no matter what even if you buy it directly from stardock. But to answer your question, I think StarDock want a more select crowd yo buy the Alpha. Put it on steam and you will have retards buying it there and then writting bashing reviews for the game based on the Alpha.
It is cheaper for Stardock if you get it at their store and just do add new game with the serial number.
Along with that it is not out yet.
Yep, it's this. Steam takes a cut of the price. For what they provide it's a pretty good deal, but for a pre-sale on the elite edition, it's an even better deal to sell directly (and keep that cut) and give out Steam keys.
You'll be able to buy directly from Steam in the future, if you prefer to do that. But buying from Steam or Stardock will get you a Steam version of the game.
Oh knowing full well that buying things like DLC's and expansions that won't exist for another five years could potentially be a stupid investment if all you get is map packs or other worthless things like that. If you are a diehard GC I or II player who cares about the franchise more then 100 dollars worth, than go right ahead, and buy it. however if your a casual gamer who probably would only play a few hundred hours on the game, I would reconsider your investment.
Right now all purchases are final, so make your choice to invest or to wait till it comes out, as investors helps cover the expenses of the games actual development before they hit the markets to get this company rich.
No.
You can contact support and get most/all of your money back
It's already been said that there will be major and minor expansions to the game, with parallels to Sins of a Solar Empire; the 'minor' DLC being akin to 'Forbidden Worlds' and 'Stellar Phenomena' that expand and improve the game in relatively subtle ways, to larger expansions like 'Entrenchment', 'Diplomacy' and 'Rebellion' that make larger, systemic changes (Think Dark Avatar and Twilight of the Arnor from GCII also).
If Stardock's policy of vastly improving the base game with expansions holds (Elemental with Legendary Heroes, Galactic Civilizations 1 & 2 with Altarian Prophecy and Twilight of the Arnor, Sins of a Solar Empire with Rebellion) then this is a good deal, a steal even.
I really find it hard to believe that Valve would agree to providing all of its services without getting a cut of each purchase, no matter how you purchase it. And it would be too much like StarDock stealing from Valve, which I find even more unbelievable.
I read into that a while ago and here is how I think it worked ( and presumably still works ).
Steam have a set of tools that they sell to Game developpers. This is what makes a game ''Steamworks''. It facilitates integration into steam and add features such as multiplayer communication inside the game, the all fabled accomplishments, DRM for piracy prevention and other things.
Devs do have to pay for that mind you, I think it is a one time fee but I am not sure, It might be a renewable contract and mayne also they have a little cut on the sales but I doubt it.
In any case, part of the SteamWorks package is that the game now requires Steam, hence each time the game is sold, a steam key is generated and the game can be activated on Steam. If steam insisted that all steamworks game be exclusively sold on Steam, not only would that have been evil, but it simply would never have worked.
Suppose Steam only charge a one time fee to Devs when they buy their Steamwork package. They still have to provide servers and bandwidth services that may cost them in the long run more than they were initially paid for, but then that generates traffic on Steam, and incidentally more sales in the Steam Store. The system does make sense and is mutually beneficial for both Steam and The devs.
Valve gets a third of the profits from everything sold.
There is too much speculation in your post and nothing to back it up.
Valve states that Steamworks is free.
"It’s free: There’s no charge for bandwidth, updating, or activation of copies at retail or from third-party digital distributors."
Through the Steam store.
And here is what Frogboy had to say:
That's how it works. Valve isn't getting a cut of the copies sold by Stardock right now. When it shows up on the Steam store, Valve gets a cut of those.
The value for Valve in Steamworks is that the game has to be in the Steam store at some point, and that it drives more people to use Steam. They're doing just fine on the arrangement.
It might be different for games that go to retail, I don't know. But there isn't exactly a ton of those these days.
Well, sry about that, it was entirely based on something I read a few years ago, as I kind of stated in my post. But then it was pretty much accurate with the exception that SteamWorks is free for devs.
