I've never been too bothered about the cartoon aspect of Galciv2. The funny looking news robot or the evil squirrels, the lighthearted humor in Galciv 2 wasn't really all that funny to be fair; nor did the game at any point try to take itself serious.
However a mate of mine earlier today brought up the subject of Galciv3 with the hope that it would be more mature, that it would at least try this time to take itself seriously. And from something that I was never really bothered about before, I have to say I agree.
Galciv 2 had its charms and Galciv 3 doesn't need to lose that charm. However I am hoping that Galciv 3 will have grown up a little and dump the non-funny dialogue, evil squirrels and good natured teddy bears and exchange that with something that feels more immersive for a space 4x game. I'm not asking for a dark filled warhammer 40k universe, but a more grown up aspect of what we got in Galciv 2 with less attempts at lighthearted fuzzy wuzzy humor...
Anyone else agree?
Beat me to it Max
Fate,
Every reply in this thread is a walking misconception of ignorance.
He's not saying stardock should do away with the humor, or 'charm' as he calls it.
The point is you don't need evil squirrels and teddy bears to be funny.
I'm proud to be a walking misconception of ignorance, I tell you. It's taken years of study to get this ignorant.
I re-read the OP and I have to say I still interpret it as a general response. The squirrels and teddy bears were just easy examples of what was called " the lighthearted humor in Galciv" which seems to include the diplomacy and technology dialogues and general tone.
Perhaps the OP would like to chime in with a clarification of "grown up". It sounds like there is an attempt for some middle ground of what is "grown up". Not that "grown up" ever applied to me. Just ask my kids. But I'm willing to talk about it theoretically.
Silly silly post
What the hell is a "Walking misconception of ignorance"? Is it when you have a false idea of what ignorance is and then attach legs to it?
More to the point, you seem to be missing part of the story yourself. Op said he did not find the humor in GalCiv funny. Many posts are responding to that specifically saying that they do not agree.
Secondly, OP said that he hoped galciv3 "would at least try this time to take itself seriously". This imply that he wishes GalCiv3 would get rid of the type of humor in galciv2, and possibly mostly get rid of humor altogether as "Taking yourself seriously" tend to be not very compatible with humor.
Thirdly, "The point is you don't need evil squirrels and teddy bears to be funny". Is that really the only point? The part that implies this is but a small part of the OP and imho the less relevant because it is a statement of an opinion and it offers no alternative together. What would be appropriately funny for galciv then? Is it the job of people who like those things to suggest the alternatives? I think not. It appears that many people on this forum LIKE evil squirrels, some even asked for them to be a playable race.
The key sentence in the op imho is the very last one. He was looking for people's opinions, and that is what he got. And then when people are done giving their opinion they start writing semi-related random stuff, because this is what happens on forums.
Every reply? That would include the one that supports OP... and yours.
But sure, I'll stipulate that your reply is a walking misconception of ignorance.
I never saw teddy bears! Damn i got to look through the minors portraits, that's funny! I never knew wetballs avatar was a dead rat. I thought it was just happy playing with a ball.
I read crazy things Confucius says, and I don't know what a walking misconception of ignorance is.
"Real knowledge is to know the extent of ones ignorance." at least I know where I am ignorant...most of the time. Lol
DARCA
When you get right down to it, this game has a shocking lack of ponies. I mean, think of how awesome it would be if Rarity gave commentary on your ship designs?
I completely disagree with your post and opinion. I loved the humor and snarky aliens. Its a game. I vote to keep all of it in and more nut eating alien space squirrels!
Oh and Vogons that have sonic poetry death rays!
Hehe, yeah well that only goes to show I like a bit of silliness just as much as the next guy! But I think silliness (as well as venereal disease) should have it's place, and I don't think that place is in such games as Galactic Civilizations. A bit here and there for flavor is OK, but when I don't bother reading half the tech descriptions because they're so corny, it does start grating on my colon.
Haha, I read all the tech description BECAUSE they are so corny.
Well, i can understand your point of view, but there can be only one official flavour of GalCiv, Original. And original tastes funny. If you want serious taste, your best bet would be that someone make a "serious" galciv mod and changes the text in it. As far as modding is concerned this kind of stuff is usually pretty easy to do. Maybe it already exists for galciv II ?
I agree that the Galciv universe is already lighthearted and that's what people will expect. I just wish that this wasn't the case. It's no deal breaker though. And if I REALLY don't like it, you're right, I can always change it. Modding the cheese out of all the dialogue and tech descriptions is something that I've thought about, but holy crap, Galciv2 had TONS of dialogue. Multiple choices for each situation for each civ - not something I'd look forward to tackling (not to mention the fact that the stuff I came up with probably wouldn't be any better than the stuff I'd be replacing). Anyway, I'm still hoping that the writing will be better, if not different than Galciv2.
Evolution is a trick of the Devil and the President is a Keynian muslim. Get out.
Aside from a few odd lines of dialogue and dorky tech descriptions (Old Mcdonald had a farm, eyey eyey O!... You know what I'm referring too) Galactic Civilizations has a pretty depressing universe filled with violent mass-murder, cannibalism, rampant racism and genocide of entire races. I can distinctly recall having a single turn on my immense galaxy having more than 500 billion deaths in a week. It's not Warhammer 40K-scale morbidity, but it's getting there; with the possible destruction of the universe in the game and the probable deaths of everything, GalCiv may actually be getting worse than Warhammer in this regard.
You should really look at the whole picture before passing judgement on the minutiae;Galactic Civilizations is pretty damn dark.
We need Space Ponies!
So judging from the replies, mature humor doesn't exist and evil squirrels and teddy bears is a go, got it.
and space ponies..
Ponies seem to be a bigger thing than I thought... You crazy kids hahaha
I dont like ponies, but I do like fearless battle crazed suicidal space furries. Now that StarDock has the liscence, I vote for the introduction of these guys:
What the heck is a "walking misconception of ignorance"?
It's a reference to the Sins of a Solar Empire forums, where everyone demanded that space ponies be in the game.
They were!
I always wondered if that achievement in Sins had anything to do with that show.. now I know. I never went onto the Sins boards, probably should have!
Most of them were, but mine wasn't. Meet our newest faction leader. This is what she'll look like if you use the ship designer to make something that's ugly.
If you are going to include space ponys - then i want a squad of ultra light speed bears. Seriously, I could lose the squirrels. But the verbal humor... more of it, please. And yes, an obnoxious species that tells lame jokes would be fine for a minor civ. Where is the three finger salute keys on this keyboard?
I'd hate to lose the squirrels. They just make logical sense when you compare.
Hopefully, the vocal minority won't have an impact on the game.
Stardock has a pretty strong history of figuring out what's the vocal minority and what's actually a player consensus, I think the Snathi are safe
Fortunately making something that's ugly isn't even an option! As we all know, pretty ships win wars.
It's a scientific fact that demonic, eyeless space squirrels will soon be upon us.
Woe to all.
OMG!!!! Then it was not a nightmare? I really did see a puddy cat, err I mean a demonic, eyeless space squirrel.
