Since several people have expressed an interest my retro gaming I am setting up a separate thread so as to not derail the games we are looking forward to in 2014 thread.
I never played Balder's Gate or IceWind Dale. They are classics which have influenced modding in the Elder Scrolls and Fallout universes. So I'm looking forward to them in 2014. Just received the disks and I'm installing them. Issues relate to old games running on a win 7 machine. The box says its XP friendly. We will see. I will share my experiences in getting the CDs to work, and maybe make a vid for others to use. I’m grateful those who have expressed an interest. J
Edit one. All 4 cd installed successfully on D drive. Graphics and char gen works fine. Made archived copies of the two install folders, and now I will install easy tutu. Basically, tutu allows a user who has Balder's Gate 1 and 2 installed to create a third folder with a version of Balder's gate 1 using the improved graphics and game play changes of the Balder's Gate 2 engine/game. EasyTutu is the most mature, and robust version of Tutu available. Two versions, ( a and - choice determined on the install of Throne of Bal... (or not). It also includes some bug fixes and enhancements. Then, there are a number of mods designed for Tutu. My plan is, assuming I get the easytutu to work, is to one by one add the mods that have a track record of working with easy tutu. Not many mods, as I have not played the adventure before, and a vanilla play thru sounds nice. The ones I'm considering add more dialog to the NPCs, restore Baldur'sGate 1 GUI, and wide screen enabler. Will update as I go. Perhaps, if anyone esle decides to go retro in 2014, my experience here will save you some false starts, and clear the path.
I installed tutu, and fired up Baldur'sGate 1 using the BG2 engine. Works like a charm. BG@ 'kits' are showing and working in BG1. Cool. Another player here on this site suggested that the problems would only present when I have high level characters... and thats like 3 months away... lol. I will add the basic bugfixes designed to work with Tutu, and two content mods that don't change the quests, but make the NPCs a bit more talkative.

BG 2 enhanced edition is also out..
The enhanced edition is not the same as playing the original. I personally love playing the original and even though I have the enhanced edition as well (mostly to play multiplayer). This is probably more true for BG1 than BG2.In any case, those are awesome games, I just finished Icewind Dale for the first time and I am moving on to Icewind Dale 2. It was a bunch of really fun combat, and very challenging at times.
I tried Icewind Dale like 5 years ago but had a hard time understanding how it worked. Was pretty new to games that were "Realtime with Pause" back then. Only one I played seriously was Knights of The Old Republic. Need to finish that one day. Really, really good! (And I have never played neither Mass Effect nor Dragon Age. Need to get around to those too!)
You don't know if there's coming some Icewind Dale Enhanced Edition? I'd try it.
If not, how do I get more control? I was into Diablo II back then and the lack of control over the characters in Icewind Dale (not to talk about creating a party!) made me give up.
This time is good to try them out as any.
Never got the hype, really. I figured out who is bad guy before I started playing.
Though I was laughing at blaster shootouts - and I though NWN1 had bad shooting.
I know, I'm risking to evoke ParagonRenegade's fanboyizm seizure, but since I was there when shitstorms happened, I suggest to tread lightly through Dragon Age and skip DA2 entirely (DA:O and DA:A are nice, just don't pick up fighter - you risking to sprain your jaw waiting for combat to end), and I suggest to consider Mass Effect has ended in ME2. If you'll risk ME3, first try to see original release first, then one with DLCs, just to join the club.
Eh? What control? Party members in IWD are quite easy to control as is, and I don't need them to ran all over the map with high "initiative". They perform basic actions, that enough. If you want, you always can adjust their behavior, though I never did that - they performed as I wanted. Tactical pause and all that.
