Hey there dear reader, I hope you enjoy reading something that has been posted billions of times before :3
You've probably guessed as to what the title means here, which despite being a reference to a terrible movie, is quite valid in this situation. Planetary invasions are lame, there, I said it. I want to sterilize planets from orbit in GCIII
I don't want my hyper-warlike crusade to be stopped by having to wait to invade a world; I want to massacre their defenses then turn their planet into a glass parking lot using lasers and bombs. And don't tell me "we have mass driver invasion tech!" because that's just a supplement to regular invasion. Let the extremely warlike players simply ravage planets from orbit and kill everything on the surface, laving it either an extremely low class or completely uninhabitable wasteland. Perhaps enable the planet to recover via tech improvements or over time.
I know Brad Wardell tackled this issue specifically in a recent interview where he was talking about how he doesn't want to emulate MoO2, but this is seriously my favourite thing to do in games that allow it; stripping planets in Sins of a Solar Empire, overheating planets in Spore, hurling asteroids into planets in Planetary Annihilation... It's just a bundle of fun letting your inner brutal sadist out.
I just want this mechanic so badly in this game; honestly, it would give my life meaning if it was.
Anyway, yeah, whadd'ya think?
Terrorstars
I thought the planet was still supposed to be there.
Terrorstars are not present in GalCiv3. The blueprints for them disappeared after TotA. or something like that. Thalans had something to do with it.
... are useless.
Because they got nerfed to death in TotA. In GalCiv 1, they were awesome. Well, too awesome actually, which led to the nerf.
Not that it matters really. Frogboy already said, that Terror Stars are unlikely to be available at the start of the GalCiv 3 campaign. I'm not sure, if he really meant the campaign, or the base game. Originally, I thought he meant the latter, but I'm not so sure about it anymore.
Anyhow, as for the idea of orbital bombardment, I hope Frogboy's statement regarding it remains unchanged:
Sure
What's that? Support for modding? Mwhuhahahahahahahahaha
Having a greatly expanded chance or ability for these options would be great.
I think Orbital Bombardments should be allowed (even if it can be not as powerful (as not all weapons have as much of an effect)). And there should be counters to this but having it could add the extra layer of complexity. Especially with the ability to Mine 0 quality planets (as mentioned in another thread.)
You could easily offset the evil-ness of doing such an action by having your relations worsen with all other races. And in the concept of this, you could make the option of "underground" cities or shelters that thus prevent the planet's population from being fully wiped out (and thus must be manually invaded) an option.
Having such a feature can greatly help with this option... I understand the worry of a bully just running around attacking planets to zero, but the option of massive fleets to attack, blockade or weaken people can add a new angle to the game.
IF they make it available, make consequences of such actions... Bare Minimum... at least allow the potential option for people to mod this in (even if the you feel the game should not have it... experimenting or more options is never a bad thing
It's Stardock's game, but it makes no sense whatsoever to not permit orbital bombardment.
At a guess they don't want people trying to fall back on the tactically unchallenging
Step 1: Fly in
Step 2: Glass Planet
Step 3: Watch AI not really know how to cope
Step 4: Declare yourself "TEH AWESOMEST WINNER EVER!"
Step 5: Complain about lack of strategic depth
Step 6: Repeat ad infinity
It's been a long long time since I've used a terrorstar, if i remember correctly though when you blow up the star you kill of the entire star system off.
Personally I'd prefer it if the terrorstar was just a planet killer though as we could use it for different things. As in when you kill a planet of it turns in to an asteroid field which you can then use to mine.
That's already the case when using Terror Stars.
The alternative is to use Germ warfare that some civs have and then destroy the colony?
I find this thread extremely ironic because over in the Sins forums we have people complaining that sieges are lame since it is 100% orbital bombardment and doesn't involve troops at all...
you cant please everyone. Especially on the forums.
