The announcement of GalCiv III is amongst the best gaming news I've heard in years and long desired. The fact that Stardock is going 64bit and Dx10+ with it just makes me even more delighted. I'm looking forward to a world class and amazing gaming experience! (And it's about time devs started ditching the 32bit/Dx9 chains).
One thing that is repeatedly striking me as I read these forums is that GalCiv II is one of the top space 4X and so many GC3 suggestions seem to want to change major elements of a game that is already pretty damn near perfect. I'm actually hoping Stardock ignores a good 95% of the stuff being discussed here lately. I want GALCIV...not some weird abomination that is no longer galciv! And I trust Stardock to deliver an excellent game moreso than random armchair devs, modders, or random forum commenters. I'm sure Stardock reads feedback and incorporates some ideas - it's another reason they rock, but man, some of these threads seem to be in regards to different games or genres.
As a side note, I'd also rather see dev time focused on PC only (forget mac and Linux) and steam-only. People who want to cling to steam hate and/or who want to use PCs unsuitable for quality PC gaming can just do without (due to their own choosing). Nothing wrong with Mac or Linux, but if you want to enjoy the best of PC gaming, then obviously you should have a quality win/PC gaming rig. Expecting devs to bend over backwards to cater to extreme minorities is unreasonable.
Um, yeah. You don't really speak for all of us. Or even very many of us. No offense, but if you want to play GalCiv 2, play GalCiv 2. And if the devs think there is enough demand to port the game to other platforms (news flash: there is) then they will. And no, it won't somehow make the game worse. This isn't 2006 anymore.
Thanks for your opinion, though.
Devs define what GalCiv is, not you. They don't need us to tell them what to read and what to ignore. They have been doing this (developing games) for more than two weeks!!!
Having solid reasons to ask for options in distribution/game, is not the same as hatred. But steamfanboys be steamfanboys?
And W T F has asking for non Steam version to do with "unsuitable for PC quality PC gaming"? I don't remember anyone asking for DOS compatible version or some else crazy stuff. Hmm Did anyone ask for Windows XP version too?
I know that if you live in a country/region without (good) internet access, you are not a gamer anymore. At least not for the Elite Gamer Master Race. All welcome Steam 1984!!!
Galactic Civilizations III will be good. Unless everybody at Stardock suddenly forgets their hard learnt lessons. Meanwhile, if someone wants to suggests a Sims like system for Galactic Civilizations III's heroes, let them.
I agree...keep it GalCiv! SD can learn a lot from Civ V. They made major changes, and it wasn't very good until after a couple of expansions. There's no reason to fix what isn't broken.
No, just no. If the world were to think like you we'd still be backward barbarians. We probably don't even have inventions like PC!
I'd love for GalCiv to remain GalCiv but improvements must be made to perfect the game further.
Galciv is not close to a perfect 4X strategy game when the military side of the game is more about building space toys than interesting varied weapons systems.Things have to improve and keep moving forward.
Civ5 is easily the most played and best Civ game today and the mechanics are very different from Civ2.
Improvements are fine as long as they keep the many aspects of the series that have made it great.
What IS GalCiv?
That's a more loaded question than you can think
I wouldn't worry too much. They will keep this game GalCiv. Lot's of strange suggestions in the forum now, I agree, but the greatest design choices are allready taken. The good thing is that real Stardockians have taken these decissions, and not an eleven year old kid that is pulling ideas out of his nose before bedtime.
I didn't like Civ5. Civ4 was my favorite Civ game. I was so looking forward to Civ5, and when I played it it was the biggest letdown. They just dumbed down the game so much. The games I played came down to catapult/artillery spam. I didn't like how the cities worked nor the buildings. The tech tree wasn't nearly as interesting. It was basically a PC version of the XBox 360 Civ Revolutions with cartoony graphics and all.
Posted to the wrong thread for some reason so reposting here:
I am loving this thread.
First off, as the designer, this is perhaps my biggest challenge. Keeping the soul of Galactic Civilizations II, but making it better sexier, and feel new. I can't really roll out a big list of what has changed, and what has stayed the same… Yet. But I will let you know that keeping GalCiv, GalCiv, so to speak is my number one priority. This is not to say we won't have lots of new things, we have lots of new things, but they all have to pass a very simple test. “Does it feel like GalCiv”. If and new feature, or enhancement fails this test it goes back to the drawing board. Can’t wait to tell you guys more.
Then don't wait!!! Tell! Share!!
No worries there, my friend.
Galactic Civilizations has been around for a very long time. It's as old (if not older) than Master of Orion (the first beta of GalCiv for OS/2 was released before Master of Orion 1 was released).
GalCiv II isn't perfect. I can think of a lot of areas we can improve on. There's a lot of really cool things we're doing with GalCiv III that make it even better than GalCiv II. That said, when the first screenshots come out, people are going to look and say "It seems very similar to GalCiv II except prettier". But that's because the core game play is still the same.
There are some exciting areas we can expand on thanks to improvements in PC hardware and also, admittedly, just having more years of being able to think about how different game mechanics lend themselves to new and interesting things.
When some of these new game mechanics show up in the betas, I think most people (as in 99%) will think "Oh yea, I see. This should have been part of GalCiv II actually." That's been my reaction when we start implementing some of these things. It's not just that they are great for GalCiv III but I kind of wish we had thought of them for GalCiv I and GalCiv II because they seem so obvious now.
That's my big worry, too. Particularly after suffering such again through Xcom.
Too many things were removed and/or suffered stupificationessnicity and it was all called "streamlining". I don't enjoy those games. Well, I positively won't play Xcom and I'll turn on Civ5 now and then (a friend purchased the DLC's to get me back in it).
Don't even get me started on Diablo III.
The point is I trusted those developers and simply threw money at 'em at the first sign. Now I don't trust 'em any longer.
I guess...I guess what I'm saying is...Stardock, consult with me about developing your games.
I'm the mean guy who won't let mormegil tell you everything, it's totally my fault
Putting together a journal post that I hope you guys will like though, so that's something! Hopefully that should go up tomorrow.
Probably the biggest difference between those games and GalCiv III is that it's the GalCiv II team (except for Cari who is on maternity leave) making GalCiv III except with more developers and artists added on.
Paul (Mormegil) was a core person on the GalCiv games. And it's me back doing the AI and Jesse back doing the ship battles and designer, and so on.

This is why I feel that my trust in Stardock is well founded. Sure, I can wait until the rollout of the alpha to see what gems the new GalCiv has. I don't want to, but yeah, I'm sure it'll be a top notch game.
Then I do be believin' that I'm happy as a clam.
Can't Cari (elf lady?!?) work from home? Gotta make it complete.
I know, it kills me that Cari isn't on GalCiv III. If she were on it, we would, literally, have 100% of the GalCiv II team on GalCiv III (except expanded with more people).
But no...she and her baby. She'll probably pop in from time to time here though.
In fact, Cari was on GC3 and helped us get the new engine going, before she left us to have a life. She is still here in spirit, and sometimes on skype, when i have a hard core GC2 question.
I can mail you bacon...
Awww. Come on, we know that you don't like to torture us. Just doing your job. If it would depend on us, you would have to post all the stuff about the game. And probably keep daily updates in Twitter/forum/...
Release the (media) Kraken!!!
Give her consulting credits?
I remember when my son was born. I actually cut work for a week without realizing it. Wife commented that she was happy I was able to get the last three days off.
Thank god I know the owner and she has a sense o' humor.
"So make sure she doesn't forget 'bout Stardock!", I guess is the selfish message I'm tryin' to put across.
Could you imagine the possible headaches that would result if they did tell us everything?
The combat threads are already getting fairly brutal.
Hahaha. Well, not everybody would want to know everything, just the parts that interest/worry them more. But bit by bit, you would get the whole picture.
The combat threads... a prelude to other system threads?
