First I'm very happy to hear the news about galciv3! Can't wait.
When it comes to my strategy games I am almost exclusively single player. There was a post I agreed with back in 2006, by Frogboy, talking about multiplayer and galciv. https://forums.galciv2.com/98074/page/25
Has the tech changed enough that multiplayer doesn't take as many resources as in the past to implement?
I'm not complaining multiplayer is in, just curious as to the change.
The main thing that's changed is the labor involved to make multiplayer work, the technology available to make it work well and the user base of people who would make use of it.
Let me give you one example: Multiplayer in a TBS game only works if it's seamless for people to play a few turns and leave and come back later to the game with their friends. In 2006, that kind of infrastructure would have been extremely expensive. Back then, every server was a physical server. Now, one big powerful server can have hundreds of virtual machines running copies of the "server".
Thanks for answering that for us, Frogboy. It makes sense nowadays.
That was my guess. Thanks for the response!
If you are including multiplayer, then please also include Hotseat this time around. Unless the fundamental mode of play has changed (turn based, combats autocalculated) it should fit without a problem.
