I really loved the CoS mod and it influenced me heavily in the creation of my next mod, which has started to slowly take up all of my time. I love it. I decided to create a mod that introduces the Tanar'ri as a playable race/faction into Elemental. Tanar'ri are demons from the lower planes that have come to invade Elemental, here is a preview of some of their abilities. Click to enlarge the picture.
Tanar'ri also have several weaknesses. They can't group, they are vulnerable to cold, they do not gain any benefit from other shards besides Fire, they can only use Fire, Death, and Air spells, cannot counter-attack, do not get swarm bonuses, have completely unfavorable diplomacy, they cannot recruit champions, are extremely resource intensive, and they can not use any items besides accessories except for special Tanar'ri made items. These items give special abilities, and there are five different levels of Tanari'ri items. There are five different weapon Tanari'ri items so far I've made. For example, your sovereign can start with Tanari'ri Grimoire I which allows your sovereign to shoot fireballs and also to cast a special Tanar'ri spell called Set Ablaze.
There are claws of two different types, hides, and each item as you increase in tier offer more unlocked combat abilities. The bonuses are tremendous on most of the items and they upgrade, but considering the many Tanar'ri weaknesses, it balances out in the end, at least until it gets play-tested. Tanar'ri currently cost the same as pioneers to make, a single Tanar'ri cost 20 population, and Tanar'ri can only gain champions by meeting certain requirements and casting a spell called Summon Tanar'ri Balor, which costs 100 population along with it's other special costs. I need someone to help me make the claw, book, orb, armor textures and provide some of the other texture work on skins. At the moment, I had to manually add textures to my Tanar'ri sovereign to make flames appear, but I believe that there is a way to have armor make particle attachments just as weapons have particle attachments, however this I have no idea to do. Hrere's one last screen. In this screen, there are two different Tanar'ri types, one is larger than the other. It also shows a spell gained from a level 1 Grimoire that casts a fire dot that can be resisted that does 2 damage per level for 4 turns.
I like the concept of a demon race.
How tough would they be to fight against? While I train masses of men, would I not swarm them with their individual guys?
Also, an idea, possibly doable, since the game does rescale units with grow or shrink spells, would it not be cool if the demons grew a bit every time they gain a level? Like 10% each time? So a lvl 10 guy would be about twice bigger than a lvl 1?
I was definitely thinking of the growth idea, I think after I have implemented how I want to design the varying units, I'll put that in somewhere. The excellent mod CoS has a demon faction called Chaos Legion that basically influenced a lot of how I'd like to do the Tanar'ri's along with some ideas from another large race the Frost Giants. I wanted to incorporate a certain playstyle where it was encouraged to keep every possible unit well trained and alive and leveled. This would take the quality over quantity argument to the extreme. So far, in my limited playtesting, the Tanar'ris do well versus the majority of opponents until they get swarmed by medium to high level multiple units. I've had the AI play a few times, and he did extremely well at challenging outpacing the other AI's in score. I guess it all depends to be seen when it's actually done.
