While I like overall options, customizations, structure and atmosphere of the game(Legendary Heroes) I was quite disappointed with combat mode animations, especially after playing Might&Magic Heroes 6 which had outstanding animations and spell effects.
This pretty much ruined the game for me, why couldn't you just hired this studio which did it for MMH6?
A fusion of this game with MMH6 would have pretty much been the best fantasy game ever made but you just ruined it...
wow, you really care a little too much about animations in a strategy game without an A+ budget and a limited audience due to not having an established ip created by a company that not only develops games, don't you?
I'm just tired of this half-assing.
then drink your warm milk and go to bed.
While it might have been said a little bit more diplomatically, the point about smaller companies with limited budgets, and where they choose to place their resources, is a valid one. It isn't as though you can always have the game that offers all the depth you want plus great graphics and animation. You have to decide what's more important. If combat screen animations are very high on your list, then none of Stardock's games are probably a great fit for you. Look only for A titles from huge companies, or lightweight games with a focus on graphics.
no, it could have not been said more diplomatically. Not in the slightest. Thinking it over, I was actually too diplomatic...
I'm sorry, but anyone who honestly claims that a complex turn-based strategy game is "pretty much ruined" by the simple fact that combat animations are not as hip as in MMH6 deserves no diplomacy at all, not even the faint one from Legendary Heroes. Again, not because the AI is stupid, not because combat mechanics suck, not because city management is lacking.... because combat animations are not as snappy as in MMH6...
Actually, I *did* say it more diplomatically. I'm not saying you should have, but none of us are above criticism for personal decisions that anybody in their right mind would call crazy. I just usually prefer not to rake people over the coals for things they've said when I know my own reflection in the mirror is going to whisper back to me things just as outrageous if not more so the next time I need to shave. Each to their own.
The problem is this is a slow burning game, when you have a game like that you need various treats. Animations and spell effects are those treats.
So when that is underwhelming it brings the whole thing down.
Wow you must really hate chess...
I am currently replaying Lords of Midnight in my iPad: No animations, no cute UI screens, no graphics to speak of, but I can't seem to put it down...
To each his cup of tea, I guess... I think there are several games out there that you will find enjoyable (lots of flashes, whistles and bells to keep your frontal lobe occupied) and obviously the FE franchise is not going to be one of them...
Alright, I think this is a bit much to the artists over at Stardock. First off, the artwork is consistent throughout the game that is a HUGE plus. I think the artists over at stardock have done a fine job.
I do like great looking graphics and that is a very nice thing to watch and see the animations do. But those artists do not have to deal with over
330+ different distinct weapons.
170+ different armors
All of which have to dynamically produced not only on the tactical screen, but the sovereign creation screen, the unit picture (which updates during the game), the diplomacy screen, and the strategic map.
If the graphics were set to that of Might and Magic VI, you would require them to OVERHAUL the entire system, to ONLY run on 64 bit computers with a good chunk of memory, maybe somewhere around 8+ gigs (I'm only guessing because i wouldn't know how much memory each of these items would graphically be). I know that are basically at the cap of 3+ gig right now for memory that a 32 bit system can read, and will utilize the 64 bit memory to a certain extent.
Before we criticize them completely on bad animations and graphics, and say it is a money issue. You are basically running your entire base out of the game because they couldn't have the system requirements to run such a game. Let us not forget that there are other factors as to why they chose the animation style they did (which I approve of deeply). I for one haven't seen a game that has this magnitude and I can see these armor pieces show up on ALL of my units and all of my picutres dynamically.
Air Elementals got retextured/remodeled. Obviously someone at Stardock cares about the quality of the art.
Lords of Midnight on the iOS..... what the!?!? How did I not know of such things, awesome!
Seriously complaining that the animations are detailed enough? My complaint would be the opposite, if they didn't have the ability to speed up the animations. Spending too much time on animations slows game play down on a game that is already a long haul type of game.
The OP could have been a little more diplomatic, but his is an attitude I think that will become more prevalent as kids who cut their teeth playing Angry Birds or Farmville or even WoW get older and start buying their own games.
These are people who learned that you don't play games to play, you play games to get rewards.
Of course, all games dole out rewards to one extent or another. Even LH provides rewards (loot, levels, lore, etc.), but it does so in a very understated way. So you find a new awesome axe, but even though it does more damage it still just acts like any other axe. You champion levels up, but there's no fireworks, just a dialog letting you pick from a number of significant, but sometimes mundane, traits. There's no stars to pick up, no fanfare, no fireworks, the game doesn't tell you how great you're doing or offer to share your achievements on Facebook.
It's as though they're expecting you to just enjoy playing the game for its own sake.
To be clear, I'm not judging. I wrote this post because to a certain degree I actually agree with the OP. The game should have more fanfare and fireworks. It should tell you how great you're doing and the axes should all have their own animations. More sparkle would really only make the game better, IMHO.
The night has fallen and the foul are abroad! Thanks for the tip regarding LoM. I remember the days spent recruiting various lords in my childhood very fondly
the animations are well done as are all the graphics in this strategy game. The only thing ruining this game for "you" is you.
Personally i could go either way. i mean i love FE and i'll gobble up everything they put out for it. I like the game for the game, not for it's looks but for it's features and the great mod ability the game has. Some feats are not so obvious to all. But putting this together and connecting all the dots on a budget that is most likely well below half of an EA title for example is a feat.
LH isn't the first in the series, it's the third. With each iteration they get better. If the graphics are a game breaker for you then well sorry to hear that. But next time try researching a game before buying it. I mean you come on here telling the world that the game is ruined because YOU don't like the graphics is really self centered. Maybe you should have watch a game play video or two on youtube before buying it. that way you could have spared the world of your childish whining.
Yes better graphics would be nice but honestly what game can you not say that about? Sure it would help with the immersion and make it _look_ like your playing a _better_ game. Eventually as new versions come out i'm sure the animations will get better. But somebody has said that each weapon should have there own special animations... that's down right outrageous and coming from somebody who has no clue what it would take to make animations for over 300 items. Only to be complained about because there's only one animation at that point or that the animations don't interact with the animations of the mobs.
It's unfortunate that you believe the game is ruined it really is. Because it's a really good game. So do us a favor though since it's ruined for you. Uninstall it and don't come back. Also next time you think about buying a game, watch a game play video or two online before buying it. Because Stardock didn't hide anything from you. They presented the game as is and if you don't like it then you didn't do enough research on the game before you bought it... which means you really have no foot to stand on coming in here whining about how it's ruined or how it sucks.
But somebody has said that each weapon should have there own special animations... that's down right outrageous and coming from
Oh quit lying about this already.
In MMH6 there are dozens of dynasty weapons and there is animation for only 2 types, staff-like and sword-like. Just like in Mass Effect there are 5 types of animations: shotgun, sniper, pistol, assault rifle and submachine gun.
So here there would be less than 6 animations total just for weapons.
Besides that ridiculously transparent lie, what is really important are animations of your heroes and creatures in combat, which I showed in the video in the opening post.
Also animations are far more important than graphics since animations can never get outdated like graphics do.
Go back to MMH6 then, keep an eye out for the next version of FE and see if the graphics of the next one meet your standards. I'm sorry i just find your wining a bit childish to be honest. I don't know what you expect to get out of the community on this.
Maybe you should take up the keyboard and make the animations you want and add them to the game? The game has a great mod structure in place so you can hire that company your promoting and then just add the animations yourself so that the entire community can enjoy your efforts.
i kinda like fallen but then i havent tried heroes6
This is annoying. Childish post is childish.
It's one of the juiciest fantasy games you can find, the art-style, visuals, animations, hero variety, faction variety, tactical options in combat..all of it is outstanding and definitely the best animations ever you can find in this genre of turn based games.
But the strategic layer/economy is somewhat simplistic.
The only thing I consider being 'missed' from the animations is the lack of them when it comes to pedestrians being displayed on 32-bit machines. Would really really like the option to have those included.
Wow, if this is the audience Stardock caters to then no wonder...
Admittingly, 32-bit are a smaller and smaller audience every day. My machine still runs strong though, operating dual core and maxed out it pretty much every way.
Games like Oblivion and Dragon Age run very well. I don't have any problems with FE either anymore once that memory leak was fixed. Couldn't set 'ground cover' to max, but I'd gladly set it to min if it meant pedestrians.
In HoMM6 there are ~25 units on the map at the same time. FE:LH features hundreds. HoMM6 has static animations for almost all units, FE:LH requires a vast amount of animations to allow for different weapontypes, abilities with those types, and mounts.
HoMM6 animations were incredible. FE:LH are average, but not bad. And given the above, I'm satisfied.
