In fact just cop the total war ui and graphic design as well and you are golden.
Just think of how cool that would be.
I dislike micromanaging combat units in real-time. It's not fun for me. I like WoM/FE/LH because of the turn-based combat.I am also fond of the art style for the Elemental games.
yeah I can understand that it wouldn't be for everyone.
But a balanced RTS combat with champions and magic would be a lot of fun, in my opinion.
I prefer turn based and the current art style myself.
you people are crazy. Master of Orion 2 had better turn based combat than this game, and that came out.... when we were all much younger people.
Not gonna hate, I like game and I like the idea of the game, but Pokemon Red Version is about on par in its combat to this game.
Stardock needs to take out a huge ass loan and really put some flash into one of their games. Hire professional animators, artists, game designers(only joking on this one, I know they have that dude from Civ 4), writers, etc.
Tactical but quick turn-based combat a'la Master of Magic was an essential part of WoM/FE/LH from the get go and I must say your suggestion is probably the weirdest I have ever read on the forum. How RTS is supposed to fit this game and playstyle is totally beyond me.
Stardock is not a pure game developer and developing/publishing niche games is only part of its corporate strategy. Trying to do an AAA+ game with an AAA+ budget, especially when it's a genre with a limited audience per se, would be corporate suicide.
No thanks.
meh.
Total War was too much micromanagement.
I don't think I would like that combined with an already managing style 4x game.
+1
Also, using the word "weirdest" is quite accurate, although I might have used a different, less polite word.
You guys are crazy. A fantasy Total War-style game would be awesome. However, this (Elemental and kids) is not the starting point for something like that. It would need to be built from the ground up.
I whiped up some screenshots of what a game like that could look like. They're a little rough, but I think it looks pretty nice!
What he said.
You can opt out of the tactical combat in TW games.
I've never really thought the Total War series had too much micromanagement. That is an odd comment to make if you actually played the games.
I'd love a true fantasy Total War attempt and rumor is that they picked up the Warhammer license a while back, The next Total War game is Rome 2 though, can't wait .
Silliness.
If I can recall, Wardell said that at one point this game was SUPPOSED TO HAVE REAL TIME COMBAT
Now please take a moment, and let that one sink in.
Thanks. It's good to have the facts, and I am most happy to bring them to you; though granted I like to just make stuff up too sometimes, as It's quite fun.
You who lack vision might think this, but some of us have dreams and passions.
You know, I am all for strategy games in a fantasy scenario with real time combat. I am just saying that the way this game is hard-wired and has been evolving in the last couple of years does not support a RTS approach in any reasonable way. This game is pretty complex and there is a myriad of interconnecting concepts, mechanics and gameplay options that are extremely susceptible to miscalculations. It's a damn hard job trying to balance these things out while introducing vital new concepts to the game, I just don't see how real-time combat would add anything to the game that warrants the big amount of work and time needed to implement it.
Which is why I wrote that it is important to realize that Stardock is not a pure game developer with the means to focus on a single big budget strategy game, especially since the overall strategy genre (luckily!) seems to come to life more and more with extremely interesting games in the last couple of months and years. Dreams and passions alone won't help you there.
I am not suggesting that this game be edited to include real time combat.. I will suggest that WOM was a complete failure at launch- and that the latest iterations of the engine are still only decent- though.
Low budget games can be great (see gal civ 2 or Sins). This game was not, and is not. It still looks as if it was made in 1998.
Stardock needs to deliver some new hotness, to be honest. They have a man who breathes, eats and sh*ts excellence in Soren Johnson, and a dude who made a cool mod for the greatest example of said excellence. But wait! that's not all! To cap it off; they also employ the man who -just for kicks and giggles(and to mess with us no doubt)- single handedly(in uncrompromisingly bad ass fashion) ruined one of the greatest franchises in all of PC gaming. That dude has huge nads, and obviously is an asset to the company.
To top it off the intrepid leader of said collection of great minds loves to nerd out and roleplay in his own games. Give him some better material to work with though, gentleman!
A nice looking( They might have to invest a few dollars. shocking, I know!) fantasy game with RTS combat.
Make it happen!
Shenanigans!
You sir, are an excellent troll. Please go away. I know, maybe you could peddle your surely excellent and unprecedented idea for a TW mod on the TW mod forums. Or you could just download and play the extensive Third Age mod for TW.
I agree if you want to play Total War games go play Total War games. Don't go trying to ruin what has potential to be a great tbg into a kiddy clickfest childish game.
You miss the whole point of tactical combat in games when you do that. All tactics games should be turn based or wego unless you have one person controlling just one regiment of each brigade of each division like in Norbsofts Gettysburg Multiplayer. :{P
Nope. I was here. Were you?
Total War is a single/multiplayer game, which happens to involve strategy and contain a sophisticated combat engine. In this game you play against the CPU, always; and the combat engine is less sophisticated than that of 23 year old RPGs and 20 year old TBS games. Sounds tough and intellectually stimulating, right? Moreover this game is called "Fallen Enchantress"( I would love to have been at the brainstorming sessions when that gem was mined)
sure. This game isn't "kiddy" at all, big guy. Of course not!
The entire implementation of this game bleeds of amateur conceptualization. I like some of the ideas that have been implemented, but its really hard to improve on something that sucks as much as this game used to. Anyone would have a tough time improving on something that ugly.
Does the combat in this game seem sophisticated, to you? What games have you played so far?
Does the strategic map portion of this game seem sophisticated to you? What games have you played so far?
The combat in this game rips from standard turn based tropes terribly. Why not borrow the less copied RTS format?
Oh wait, they wanted to do that; but then realized they didn't carry any professional artists, programmers, or animators. You absolutely can make low budget art! But you have to be competent. Stardock may very well have competent designers that could get the job done if given another shot, but they literally have nothing else. You have to have A+++ design if you have no ancillary resources. With this game it's as if they tried their hand at graphics(etc.), and failed miserably. Strip it down or rev it up!
Interesting comment. I've wondered before what the game would be like now if Kael and some of the other staff had signed on when WOM first entered development.
TW games ARE turn based, until combat. There is nothing "kiddy clickfest" or "childish" about them. They use a truly sophisticated combat engine. Nice try though.
Paraphrasing the troll (he would want me to mention his name) replying to Reply 19 in his Reply 21:
Other game is so much better. Game's name sucks.
Sarcastic personal put down.
Game sucks.
Graphics suck.
Combat isn't sophisticated, therefore it sucks.
Strategic map sucks.
Combat format sucks.
Rambling conclusion further putting down the company.
I really don't understand the troll mentality. There are many games I don't like at all, but I certainly don't waste my time hanging out in their forums. It's both sad and funny at the same time.
With all likelihood it would be much better.
RTS combat in a fantasy TBS is a great wet dream. There are a lot of things that would need to be addressed though.
Do champions fight on their own, with a inseparable bodyguard, or attached to surrounding defending units?
I cant see a game with champions casting while getting freely hacked or shot at(while surviving improbably) being any fun, So I would think the caster needs some sort of defense.
Perhaps at some level of proficiency a given caster could fly. Rendering him/her immune to all but spells and arrows. For added realism he or she could channel a B.A.M.F force field or some other sort of defense with the right hand while shooting lighting Sith style with the left
I would think many spells would need to have looooooooong cast times to balance magic with physical combat.
Anyways Stardock, you are ostensibly the pros. Make it happen!
