Dear Derek, Brad, and the rest of Stardock,
I am enjoying the LH beta immensely, and it keeps getting better with every iteration - so first of all I wanted to extend a heartfelt "thank you" and "great job" !!!
The current version of the game is almost perfect for me - no crashes, few niggles, and a couple of personal preference issues that I can easily fix through modding.
I do, however, have one critical functionality issue that ruins a lot of the gameplay for me, and has also been mentioned by several other board members: the massive annoyance of having other AI troops casually stroll through your borders, get into your territory and build cities and/or outposts.
It is EXTREMELY annoying to have to spend time every turn to look for enemy troops across all your borders and to contact every one of them and tell them to leave your grounds - it also makes no sense to be able to do it manually (which is micro-management) and not to be able to do it in a more automated and global manner.
As a work-around to avoid this frustration I find myself declaring war immediately with any AIs I see, so I can at least get a warning if their armies enter my borders - which is definately not an effective way of using diplomacy...
I would therefore very strongly ask that you implement a more permanent "close my borders" action in the Diplomacy options, which can be activated and/or deactivated for specific AI opponents. Obviously something like this would be considered a hostile action, and would hurt relations with the AI in question (and perhaps with other AIs as well), and should also have a small risk of triggering war with that AI. If the programming is easier, this could simply be a global option to automatically trigger the "get out of my borders" action.
Before someone points out that this option would have to be used by the AI in order to be fair, let me argue that it is ALREADY used (in an unfair way for the player), since the AI already has its own internal automatic triggers to detect the presence of other forces, and to ask for their removal (while the player has to manually execute the same process every turn). The implementation of such an option would therefore merely even the playing field, giving the player a functionality that severely reduces micro-management and frustration.
I REALLY hope that you will implement this, but here are a couple of easier alternatives:
1. implement a warning system similar to the current one (enemies entering your borders) for all armies, including neutral or friendly AIs
2. Allow free passage only for those AIs that you have signed a peace treaty or NAP with (extending the current warning from just hostile units to also include neutral units)
I would ask the rest of the forum to support this thread and keep it alive if they also feel that this is a feature worth implementing.
Best, bendiwolf
I agree totally.
Meh. People have been asking for this since WoM. If they're going to change it (which they're not) they should just do away with the "leave my lands" mechanism altogether. Like auto-explore, it's a hold-over from other TBS and a completely worthless appendage. It's annoying to do it to the AI and annoying to have it done to you. It doesn't make sense the way units are warped distances that should take them multiple turns to travel. And it leads to weird results like units warping into inaccessible areas of the map.
Instead, you should be able to attack any units in your ZoC without having to declare war (barring a NAP/Alliance treaty).
I think the problem is Easy of Use. You should be able to select the unit from an enemy faction, then click a small Kick icon in the bottom left with the rest of the units details. Then maybe make the kick military command linger for a few turns.
Also could the player kick military command be a little less polarizing? Whenever I use it my sovereign seems to suggest two options every time: Get Out, or, Prepare to die.
Bring back the Xenophobic trait from GC2 and reduce their movement to 1 tile/turn? Give Tarth race an auto -3 hp per unit per turn Harry ability for hostile units in their territory?
This, and with ZERO diplomatic fallout.
The first time the AI does that to your troops... just kills them outright, what are you going to do... declare war on the AI or just say... oh I'm sorry you can go ahead and kill my army. Not like they were useful to me anyway, not like they had families. I'd say if one does this and war is not declared that your factions unrest should go up 10%, due to the fact that the populous is angry and wants you to do something about it. To remove that unrest you must declare war. If it happens again unrest goes up again.
I agree about the mechanic of saying hey get out of my territory thing. They already pop-up when there are monsters in your territory, it should be the same with enemy armies. I would even go as far to allow a trait that allows a unit not to cause this pop-up... a stealth unit. Pioneers and scouts should automatically have this trait as to not arouse suspicion of the people they are walking through. Armed men they should raise alarm and people should react by saying move your 100 troops out of my lands immediately.
A notification of non-hostile units in your territory seems like it would be easy to implement, and useful.
One a tangential but somehow related note, there should also be a war-weariness unrest penalty which increases with the length of a war.
This would be really irritating on huge maps, where the AI bloats its "power score" by building thousands of pioneers and then declares war on you non-stop for being "weak".
I personally would not want this. But if it were a option then I have no issue. Of coarse I would alwas have this turned off.
Yes ! At least this !!!
Any response from Derek and/or Brad on this request?
There is no nation in the world or the history of the world that tolerates unpermitted incursions by troops of other nations, friend or foe!
In fact, some wars get started when one nation builds up troops on the border.
I don't think it would be easy to implement. I also wouldn't consider it a critical change. I mean, most of the time, I don't care if non-hostiles are within my borders. If they declare war, they get kicked out and have to come in again. I'd call it more of a "would be nice for some players" functionality.
Bumping this for impact - still the most critical issue in the game for me...
Didn't Brad say he was planning to have the AI players build up a invading force before declaring war? (I know this is a bit OT though.) I wouldn't mind seeing an option to show notification for current non-hostiles in your territory.
