Next week Triumph Studios will finally announce Age of Wonders 3! They haven't disclosed anything officially yet, but everything points in this direction.

Hope it turns out well for them.
SM was pretty crappy as far as SP went. I know there are MP fans of it though.
Actually AOWSM with unofficial patch 1.4 and the BNW mod was a lot of fun single player. I still play it from time to time. Obviously our experiences were not the same.
I am really looking forward to AOW3.
I had a great time with both the original and sm, only playing sp. Perhaps the AI wasn't very good, but there are some awesome scenarios available that make you forget this is even issue..
AoW2 sucked me right in when I was young. The sieges were just mind-blowing - surrounding a city with several armies, towers shooting magic stuff, destructible gates... it will be interesting if AoW3 can build on the sequel enough to pull me in again. Very concerned how the transition to 3d will go.
Oh it's going to be fully 3D? I hope they'll be able to maintain the gorgeous atmosphere the previous games had. Then again, they have plenty of experience with 3D, the Overlord games look great imo.
I just assume it's going to be 3d. There's literally no info out yet.
I am one of those who felt that AoW was great, and all the sequels just continued to get worse. They weren't bad, just worse than the 1st.
The campaign in SM was really not my cup of tea either, and the AI was simply poor. Which isn't a surprise, few AIs in games like that were/are any good.
I'll be interested to see how 3 turns out though. I did like the mechanics of the series, just the execution failed in a few areas.
MP got high marks from a lot of people I know, and I know there are several custom scenarios which are entertaining. Just not entertaining enough for me to deal with the stuff I disliked
Oh yes, it's on! Age of Wonders 3 has been officially announced, and it's coming THIS year!
It's so beautiful, almost brought a tear to my eye But they could have just shown the last 20 seconds for all I care, the tune at 1:28 brought me right back to when I first played AoW, almost 14 years ago.
The main new feature seems to be the class system for your leader. Your leader is no longer just a wizard, he/she can be a warlord, a theocrat, a rogue, a sorcerer, a technocrat, or an arch-druid. The class will have a strong influence on the development of your empire.
Tactical combat has also changed a bit, flanking will be possible, and units can have more than one soldier in them.
Not to gloat or anything, but this could totally blow FE out of the water I think.
Some more eye candy:
Is it fall yet?
Looks very cool. There are obviously a lot of FE comparisions however you would have to compare it to LH and I think LH stands a half decent chance. I would not be surprised at all if this got higher reviews though. It just seems more mainstream and in your face.
It's pics like those bottom 2 that make me want to gouge my eyes out everytime I play FE. Elementals environments are just so bleh. One of my biggest beefs with FE is the lack of interesting terrain, props, and worlds. So far LH still has a ways to go in that regard.
Oh ya and they have navies.
I hadn't read up on LH yet when I posted. I agree that LH looks pretty good, so who knows, maybe we'll have two good fantasy tbs games by the end of the year. But the Elemental franchise still has a long way to go, because (based on the previous games and a few bits of information on the site) AoW3 will have:
I'm worried about his as well. LH seems awesome but outside tactical battles it seems like the races will be even more homogenized with the cutting of several resources. You can't just have the races have different units, they have to have to play differently strategically as well.
I don't think this has ever been done well.
LH will have swarming and line damage.
We can hope?
About time..
AOW SM = my fav game ever
Here's hoping it'll work on my mac
I haven't been this happy about any game ever! Best fantasy-TB strategy-game ever.
This announcement really made my day. I have been playing AoW for like 12-13 years. No game has pulled me and kept me like that, EVER! I made a lot of friends playing it online (and I agree, that's where it really shines). The only bad thing about this news, is that autumn can't come any faster!
Oh my goddess I'm all giddy. AoW did so many things right and in such an elegantly simple way. Different races, sieges, ships, a steampunk-like faction (from what I see), beautiful map, gaaaaawd!
This game looks awesome. I loved AOW 1 and 2.
I can totally live without any steampunk nonsense in my fantasy games thank you very much
We'll see though, I refuse to get excited about these things until we actually can see how the mechanics work and how they have chosen to balance (or not to balance...) the races.
See different strokes for different folks..personally I wretch at the inclusion of elves in fantasy but I'm excited about Aow3 specifically because of the steam punk and religious elements. What bugs me is this video..its all concept and no gameplay. cosplay videos to advertise video games instead of the actual games themselves - are slowly being norm...and we shouldnt accept this as customers. So us the product not a romanticized sales pitch.
Oh, indeed, for those who like SP elements I'm sure it will be a great addition to the game.
for me... not saying it would be enough for me to not buy it, but if the rest of the mechanics is some kind of rehash of SM then I will probably skip it. I've got enough sense to not waste my time or money on stuff which doesn't give me what I want
Screw you both, I like both elves and steampunk.
Actually, the earlier AoW games already showed the beginnings of steampunk-ishness with airships, firearms, canons, flame canons, drills, etc. In AoW1 humans even had muskets and in AoW2/SM we had freakin' Steamtanks. There was quite a bit of technology in that fantasy world.
I know, I didn't like it those games either, but the effect wasn't that large for the lower tier units, they were just a different type of archer.
The balloons were just kind of cheesy I thought.
Though really it's just that I don't much care for the mixing of SP with fantasy in general. If the mechanics are good, and the game plays well it won't bother me much though.
I've been kinda harsh (but IMO deservedly so) on the AOW series for its garbage AI, but on their forums, I did see a promising sign- it sounds like they're going to try and use the threading AI idea that Stardock did for the Elemental games.
One thing Stardock should borrow from AOW3- they're going to make the quick battles run like full tactical battles, just under the hood. This will be different from how it is done in FE (which is pretty terrible and a fairly decent knock on FE)
Triumph is targeting an autumn 2013 release for Age of Wonders 3 on PC, but won't force it if it's not ready. There are plans for a Mac version - maybe even to launch simultaneously - but these aren't set in stone. Later on, a tablet version may appear.
Also noteworthy:
It's not a Kickstarter project - work began in 2010 before the Kickstarter boom - and it doesn't have a new-age business model. Age of Wonders 3 has high production values and will be sold on Steam and Good old Games and in boxes in regions where that's appropriate.

Hey guys!
First of all, this forum is amazing! I think this is the most beautiful forum i have ever seen!
I ran across it when i was doing research for my Age of wonders 3 fanpage.
Anyways, i wanted to agree with enoeraew37 that thefirst video is more of a conceptual teaser. We are lucky though that we got some pictures of Age of wonders to boot!
