Only 2 days left until release
I don't want to sound sappy here but we have been really touched by all the support we've gotten from you guys over the past couple of years that we've been working on this.
One of the motivations for making so-called "niche" games is that we really enjoy our tight knit communities. We enjoy hanging out with you, listening to your ideas, arguing different game designs, etc.
Earlier today, we went "gold" which simply means 1.0. I like to think that games are never truly finished. They simply ship. For me, that just means that 1.0 is the beginning of our journey together -- not the end.
In the meantime, let me share with you some of the things we've been doing since the last public beta and 1.0...

I've gotten a lot of questions from people over the past couple of years about why we are giving away Fallen Enchantress to the early adopters of War of Magic. They say people won't remember War of Magic (it was 2 years ago). They say it won't "buy" good will back from those who didn't like WOM.
It doesn't matter. The reality is, our job is to make some of the world's best PC games. Period. Regardless of the reasons, War of Magic didn't live up to that standard. And since we developed it internally, we had the ability to make good on that.
The budget for Fallen Enchantress was about twice that of War of Magic. I am a firm believer that people DO remember when companies backup their stated beliefs with deeds.. They remember when companies make good on their word. I think that in the *long-run* (and Stardock is one of the oldest non-public game developers in the industry so we think long-term), people will have confidence that we mean what we say: If you buy a Stardock game, it will be excellent.
A huge thank you
Tuesday is the big day. It's hard to believe that in the next week or so we'll have a pretty good idea of the fate of Fallen Enchantress. We hope that people out there like what we've done here. We have you to thank for it. Few games have had the opportunity to spend so long in a public, no-NDA beta where people could give their suggestions, criticisms and ideas. The game is better for it. And that couldn't have happened without your help.
We look forward to reading your feedback and deciding together what we should do next with this game that we love so much.
I`m getting Fallen Enchantress for free. I can`t speak for "everyone" like the smart marketing guys always do but I would not have been following Fallen Enchantress if it wasn`t for how Stardock responded to WoM`s difficulties. I would have been gone and probably not care about anything Stardock released for a while.
Brad`s response though not only kept me here but also reassured me that my faith in Stardock is not misplaced. I even bought The Political Machine while waiting for FE, I would never have bought that if I had been left in the dark after WoM`s debacle.
I would not have bought FE, I would never buy it`s expansions. Saying I would never buy a Stardock game again, is looking too much into the future, but I would definetely have moved Stardock from the "buy whatever they release" status to a more EA-like status of "don`t buy for many many months before it is proven that this is worth getting".
I think FE will get a many new fans that will buy the game because of the hype and goodwill that this business decision creates. Reviewers will mention it, friends will mention it. The people that get it for free? Those will buy whatever expansions you have in store.
Galactic Civilizations II: Ultimate Edition? And who do I gift it to?
Yes, and Jythier.
If you want.
I don't know why you would though.
I just posted a thread to get a better understanding of how FE compares to GalCiv2. I'm hoping it leads to me buying FE, because I really miss the land-based Civilization games.
"Fixed an issue that could cause naked, headless custom sovereigns when restarting a game"
Oh, come on, that's so awesome, it should have been categorized as a feature.
On Steam?
That's me. Jythier on Steam, JoeUser, AOL back in the day...
I need your email address in order to gift it
@gmail
Yay, now I don't need to decide between GalCiv and FE!
Giving away a copy of GC2 to a complete stranger just to support Stardock? If that doesn't deserve karma, nothing does.
Karma for you!
sent... Enjoy.
I also remember the announcement of the game and the alphas ('ALPHAS ARE NOT MEANT TO BE FUN' comes to mind).
I remember the CTD's on my laptop and gaming desktop.
I remember the stuff that wasn't that fun (dynasties anyone?)
I stuck in after the poor reviews BECAUSE I had faith that it would be made right (I'm doing the same for Sword of the Stars II)
I'm HAPPY to see a company following through on the promise of the next 2 game in the Elemental universe being made available FREE to purchasers before a certain date (a $50 game AND a $40 standalone expansion AND a not-yet priced third one for the $70 I paid for the WOM limited edition in 2010? worth it to me).
There is a reason Stardock will get my money and that is because they stick to their principals (although having all my games downloadable through steam is nice using my full speed to download direct from the dev is good too)
Woohoo! I'm enjoying the thought of it until I get home!
It's the first time I've ever gifted anything on Steam, so if it's not there, let me know ASAP so I can rectify it. wizaerd at gmail dot com
Oh, and, thank you very much!
If so I hope frogboy can share what the problem is so modders can give it a try
I pre-ordered War of Magic. I didn't like the game at release. I DO remember War of Magic. I appreciate that I was given Fallen Enchantress (including Beta access) for free. This DID "buy" my good will. After playing the Fallen Enchantress Beta, I went out and bought the complete set of Sins of a Solar Empire (I usually stay away from Real-Time games, but Stardock is a good company, so I figured I'd give it a try.)
How'd you like it?
Just because of this you will probably be still here when all the others crap makers that call themselves Game Companies will disapear in the void of bankrupcy.
Really, best luck for the release ! Hard to wait until well... 2 days.
I can only join in the chorus:
Thank you for your excellent work!
I think what everyone really wants is a 1 day until release thread.
Does anyone else keep checking the Stardock.com store page "just in case" ??
Woot! Woot!
Over the flu in time for the release!
I didn't buy WoM, I saw it was a game that fit my interest, but I read the reviews and choose not to.
After seeing FE coming, I read the reviews and was shocked to find a company standing behind their product so strongly. I "Pre-Ordered" the Beta without hesitation because of it. I can't say I'll buy every Stardock game now, but I plan on buying every expansion and will continue to watch their website for new games I might like. I believe in the customer service they proivde and WANT to put more money into supporting it. Perhaps I should buy a 2nd copy for myself or a friend.
Woot! Woot! Over the flu in time for the release!
Glad to see you are well. Without good health, it's difficult to enjoy anything.
Happy gaming!
Ditto and amen.
Edit: while I would not have followed the game without the promise of a free FE, I will say that FE is so much fun, I would be willing to drop up to $40 on it tomorrow if I had to.
