oh god, yet another game I have to support
Put in $10 and wish them luck. Thats my 6th backing. I love Kickstarter.
Man, I have to say, you really root for these guys. Great concepts and presentations there...not to mention a cute German chick on their team as well.
I was just about to start a new thread on this game, but I see igorCRO beat me to it.
I already kicked in my pledge. Despite the disappointments most of the 4x games this last year have turned out to be, this one looks like it could be something truly special.
Hello I have to register here and answer you guys... I've just make some resarch about our backers and one of them "send" me here.. and.. I had to sign up here, just to told you that Dominika is Polish girl, not German And.. if we succeed with achieving our goal, we will have for you nice suprise
Pledged $20. Good luck to you guys.
I think a few of us have backed you today, since igorCRO spread the word
Does Dominika know that know that she will participate in the nice surprise?
This project is very ambitious and I'm not sure they can pull it of; but I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt and my money.
I really want them to succeed and I'm looking forward to having a star system named after me (not my forum name of course).
Looks very nice, will be interesting to see if they can reach all their goals..
She's cute Polish chick (her name is Dominika Wróbel, it's Polish name and surname).
At Wargamer there is a lot of feeling like they haven't done much of the actual coding and that they won't be able to create the game as outlined, for time as well as practicality reasons.
How much actual programming have they done? Do they have a working engine? Are they going to make alien races that aren't just anthropomorphized earth animals?
You've been hanging around ghostryder too much. Best to take his "expert opinions" on game development with a grain of salt or two.
You do realize that at some point in the development of every classic game we each individually love there was a point where ZERO actual programming had been done. There were months were they did NOT have a working engine.
And anthropomorphized earth animals are suddenly bad? Well, throw out MOO2. They anthropomorphized earth animals, several species of dinosaurs, and a damn rock. Clearly the game sucked.
Well I do game programming myself and I see a lot of people who overestimate their capabilities.
They aren't bad, its just unrealistic and boring. Lazy you might say. Its not a showstopper but it would certainly make me happy to get something with more thought put in.
I know how programming works because I do it. But I also know about groups of people who think they can make a complex game and fail. Lots of them. And even if they get it working, how good will the execution be?
They all have CS degrees true, but that doesn't prove that much to me. I know people with CS degrees who are way too OOP obsessed or who just don't do well with creative solutions or who can't visualize a program that is to have 100000 lines of code very well and so forth.
I will give em a chance. I am like them, where is the next MOO II?
I also love the general principle and goal, but it's like the old monty python sketch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tNfGyIW7aHM
A couple of the the things you can see on the kickstarter page sadly make me hesitate:
- "For example, a space yard is a solution that will be new to this genre, where users can design their own spacecraft." --> that's a new idea? I mean, I am trying to appreciate the differences in language (German is my first language), but I don't see how this can be a misunderstanding.
- "In our game, there are no starlines. The player will have complete freedom." --> I see that as a serious drawback. Most space games suffer from lack of strategically interesting maps (with bottlenecks, etc.) or "terrain" as most land-based maps have; "jump lanes" are an artificial help which have usually worked well in the past.
- "M.O.R.E. will be visually appealing by using intuitive interfaces. Based on our basic game developing principles, we will enhance and improve the gaming experience. By providing an intuitive interface for each race, we will maintain that goal while providing each race their own unique interface design" --> sorry that really makes me think of the Monty Python sketch I linked to above.
- "The game will be divided into nine chapters, similar to other 4x games. Each chapter provides standard functionality in conjunction with the design team's original ideas, rarely seen in games of this genre." --> wait, what? Other 4X games have 9 chapters? Versteh nicht ganz, was Ihr da meint. But then it's somehow different from the way the other 4Xs out there implement it?
- "This will be resulting in well-controlled spectacular engagements with an abundance of deadly beams, missiles, fighters and many other types of enemy attacks, such as suicide attacks or the possibility of ram hostile unit." --> sure, but...
"We will, of course, introduce additional improvements to this part of the game, such as the ability to determine maximum time that players have to complete their turn." --> if that is your improvement, I hope I can turn that off
- "Artificial Intelligence will be very challenging" --> that's good! Do you have experience in programming AI?
- "Management of your vast empire will be possible through innovative approach unseen in other games of the genre. We will not rely on automatization of processes, which in time reduces gameplay to mere next-turn clicking. Instead, you will be able to discover and develop technologies assisting in management." --> I think I understand, but ...
"As your empire grows and science progresses, you will be able to merge colonies of one star system into a supercolony called Dysonian Sphere. After further expansions and scientific developments, it will become possible even for these supercolonies (if they are close to each other) to be merged into clusters managed as one entity. Such clusters will have enormous industrial and scientific potential and will be able to produce spaceships of truly epic design, capable of destroying whole star systems" --> how is that "management"? That is an in-game economic feature, not a UI tool designed to help me manage my empire. Or what am I not understanding?
I like your ambition very much, but if you really did create a 200 page dossier describing the innovations of the game, it would be great to know a little bit more, perhaps in a language more suitable to your target group. (You also might want to let a Native Speaker of English check your writing.) Doing so will get you a lot more pledges.
I was about to post a link to this as well. It caught my attention too but I must say the seem a little too ambitious. I do wish them the best of luck, and will probably pledge $10, but ambition alone isn't going to build a great game. I mean even GalCiv 2's AI still has some faults, even if it's the best 4X AI, and Brad is kind of an AI expert. Art and music are very very important for this kind of game, and they seem to be doing good so far, with the music at least, but true gaming experience comes from great AI. Few people play 4X games in multiplayer, and if they do, it's probably Civilization.
Also, 3D galaxy map is a bad idea, just look at SotS. You will vomit blood trying to navigate through it. Hopefully it will have a 2D option, like SotS.
Eh...
3D is fine once you get used to it, but there is a bit of an adjustment period.
On the other hand, 3D is totally unnecessary in these games and only exists for developers to flex their e-peen.
None of that will matter if the game play is good.
More to support!
Hello,@Nasarog - I think all men will be happy to see our 50.000 goal surprise @7EA - why not? 7EA sounds nice for a star system name @TAOCuathon - We have some working part of our engine. We have interface engine (about 2000 code lines), and we have working 3D galaxy part (about 10 000 code lines). This was our perogative. If we fail to do this , and if we don't know that we are able to do this game to the end (without tons of bugs) we woudn't start kickstarter project.
We don't overestimate our capabilities - we know how much work we still have. We present 4 alien races: Skitieli (strange ape-like), Bruthas (tauron), Zientzielari (brains), Hvalur(space monster). As you see we have only 50% races as anthropomorphized earth animals.@onomastikon - We have to cut our presentation under 10 minutes and I think we cut off some part of txt there. We want to create a ship build system like in "galactic civilizations 2" - where you can build your starship hull from parts. How many 4X games have that?We don't have starlines.. yes. But we have other interesting points which can be important for military/strategic purpose. I can't write you all the things right now, but I think our galaxy map will be interesting place for strategic generals and choices - where to defend and where and how to attack Yes - game host will decide how much max. time will be for a turn... or you can set unlimited turn time.Yes - we have experience in programing AI - not much... but we have.
This in-game feature (Dyson spheres) will change your late game micromanagement experience. We will try to improve standard management as well. If you have some brilliant idea - we are open to your suggestions.
My english may be bad.. ok, but I think you understand what I'm trying to tell you. (I always was bad in english and quite good at programming) I don't have time to go to our american teammates with every post I write. They have more important things to do. Our presentation and updates were checked by them.
If you want to know something more... I invite you to our game forum: www.morethegame.com/forum and of course to support us on Kickstarter. And.. how Adam Solo from spacesector.com writes:"Now, this will depend on how each one of us sees Kickstarter. If we start betting only on sure things with great credentials than I guess we are only doing the same as Publishers were doing in the past, i.e. trying to bet on sure winners, whatever that is. Or we can give a chance to a bunch of people that had the courage to take the plunge and risk to get a fair or even great space 4X game in a couple of years. It’s our choice."So, it's Your choice to support us or not.
p.s. We have 3D galaxy map.. yes. But when you look from far away - you will see rather "flat" galaxy - like here:http://www.morethegame.com/gallery/2012090101.jpgp.s.2. : THANK YOU for Your support.
My apologies and compliments to the Poles.
3D map is only fine if it's like Star Ruler's. It's realistic, it's beautiful and easy to navigate, yet it maintains the plane structure, which happens to be approximately true, at least for our galaxy.
EDIT: I do not want to sound critical in any way to the devs of MORE, I especially applaud their dedication to the artistic aspect of the game, and again, I wish them the best of luck with their Kickstarter campaign to which I will contribute, and with the development of the game.
