Hi everyone, I'm just going to create a Modding tutorial for anyone who wishes to know how to edit the game files to change things. If any admins are reading, would you please consider creating a new sub forum for Modding so that its easier to navigate to on the forums?
This is part 1 of the tutorial.
DISCLAIMER: Before the tutorial starts, I recommend that you backup any files you are about to edit, your changing parts of the game, and you should be aware that this is not the intended use of the xml files in the game folders, I take no responsibility, and (although I can't speak for them) Stardock can not be blamed for damage you do to, including but not limited to, your save files, your program files and any other aspect of your computer.
Please be aware that customising characters can be considered cheating, and It really takes a lot of the fun of the game in my opinion.
PART 1: Character Customisation
Installing a new character
After download a new character you should have 2 files, one called: CANDIDATENAME.Candidatexml and CANDIDATENAME.candidateccfgxml.
simply place the candidatexml file in the folder [\Documents\My Games\PolMachine2012\Candidates]
Then you need to place the candidatecfgxml file in the folder [\Documents\My Games\PolMachine2012\Candidates\Configs]
NOTE: if you have a .candidate file, instead of or aswell as the other files, please place it in [\Documents\My Games\PolMachine2012\Candidates\Packages]
I've personally not installed any 3rd party candidates, so can't say for sure that this will work, but this is where the custom characters are located, so I dont see why it wouldn't work. I will try and test this when I have a bit of extra time, if anyone tests this and it works, please post and i will remove this disclaimer.
Customising a Character stats
Customising a custom characters stats is really easy, but ruins some of the aspects of the game, so be aware of this, as it really does affect the fun-ness in the game.
Navigate to: [\Documents\My Games\PolMachine2012\Candidates]
Locate the characters name in that folder. The file will be called something like: name.candidatexml
Right click on the file and select [...open with] and then select Notepad.exe.
In this file you can't do a lot of damage, but can change a lot.
Here is a list of the things you can edit:
NOTE: To edit this, just change the number in the middle of the <> # </> for each of the topics. DO NOT CHANGE ANYTHING ELSE.
You can change any of these considerably. FundRaisingAbility can be set to anything, setting it to 1000 would get you about $450mil from fund raising in California for example.I recommend you don't add too many zeros to the Money section, as it causes the money to glitch out and go into - figures. and makes the game unplayable.
setting stamina to 1000 gives you practically unlimited moves. setting it to 100 will give you 104 moves per turn. you get the idea.
You can also edit any of the issues in that file. But I haven't tried it yet.
End of part 1
I'll pass along your mod sub-forum request.
Nice work!
Thanks, I've got a lot more tutorials written ready to post, But they would get lost in the system in the general folder.
Wow, I was just thinking of posting a similar tutorial, but you beat me to it and perhaps did it better than I would have. Good on you, reddarrow141!
Using this technique, I've moved all of the characters from TPM '08 to TPM '12 and edited them through Notepad. It's necessary with candidates like Bill Clinton and absolutely essential for powerhouses like George Washington, who has impossibly high stats, haha.
One thing I would add is that to have access to most of the candidates from TPM '08, you really have to have it installed either through Impulse (Gamestop Ap) or via the actual disk. Currently, the digital download is no longer available through any sites I know of, but you can find the hard copy for sale from any number of online vendors.
At some point, I think I'll post all the stats of the TPM '08 candidates in a post here so that not everyone has to play through the entirety of '08 to get the accurate stats for rebuilding them on '12. Unless you beat me to it.
It is quite easily-accesible knowledge and can probably be found in numerous FAQ's online, as I know the original Political Machine's candidates are. Not to mention that none of the original TPM '08's premade characters are available for download at Wincustomize, so a player would have to buy TPM '08 to have access to them, making the stats essentially useless unless you have already made the purchase.
Nevertheless, this is Stardock's forums, so I will respect and relent to its preferences.
To be perfectly honest, there would be no point copying them over, you might as well make them yourself with what you think they would be like. because the TPM '08 has different issues, so they will be missing some stats.
There are many issues that carry over, but my main concern is with their attributes and not their platform. It just creates a sense of authenticity for me. I don't mind blank platforms for some of them so long as things like their Fund-Raising Ability and Intelligence remain. I want to have the same challenge beating Reagan as I did in '08, for instance.
I guess you could say I'm trying to bring the two games together. This might be easier character and scenario-wise if I were to go from '12 to '08, but '12 is of course more current with issues and the like. Now all I need is a drop-down menu item to play differenct scenarios and I will be able to effectively consolidate the two games into one glorious Machine. Variety is the spice of life, after all.
I know the '08 candidates are Stardock property, if Stardock doesn't want the info posted online, why didn't they just include the candidates in 2012 in the first place?
Probably to just make us pay more for candidates they can just copy and paste over in DLC
You could say that about any sequel to a game. Why did 2k decide not to include the same civs in civ5 as they had in Civ4? The truth is, they probably won't add them as paid dlc, or if they do, it'll probably be with some other things, not just on their own. Would you really want to give away stuff that you made for another game to people? if you own '08 you can copy them over, and they have said that, if you don't own '08 then you don't have a license to the content they made.
hey i had many custom characters and enjoyed the custom ones as i like the control of making them more biased as some real politicians and celebrity politicos are in real. i had to refresh my cpu windows 8 updates problems and lost everything.
i would like to download some custom players to save myself time recreating more.
espec. democrats as i notice the game is sold with more republican characters as default which i think is little biased and unfair as per starting selections.
anyway want to enjoy some fun games and characters
i made a cool bill maher before , and want elizabeth warren to bash the banks lol
ive tried these folders and put the files of elizabeth warren where this page guide says too but she aint showing!
any help?
or better yet an install tool to do it auto like other games enjoy?
or any mods that have lots of new custom characters pre-installed?
is the uk mods working?
peace
I've had similar issues to the previous user with .candidate files. Any recommendations to get them working?
