So,
Sins was one of my favorite RTS back in 2008 or whenever it came out, so I was really excited to hear that a new expansion would soon be released. Titans! New capital ships... new races even. The anticipation was killing me, and I happily threw down $40 for the pre-order.
This is it? I've gotten better value out of DLC packs. What content there is... is well done. But there just really isn't enough of it for me to recommend this game to anyone who owns trinity. I'm already growing bored of the same old game with a few different ships.
I'm sure this post will attract more than a few staunch defenders of the SINS team. I'd like to hear from anyone else that feels like this expansion really wasn't worth the price. What's the refund policy here?
This expansion was better than you made it out to be, but yes there were flaws.
However, it is important to realize that the game was not stable in it's current diplomacy patch, so adding a whole bunch of new features and content would only add to possible crashes and desyncs people may have been experiencing. it was my personal hope that the 40 dollars of rebellion would go towards optimizing the engine and bug fixes, with only small additions of content.
But, I would really say there was more than "just titans"
6 types of titans, 3 new capital ships, 3 new subfactions (sure they are similar, but they do have some big differences), corvettes, new techs, and some changes to planets among other things.
With modding, the possibilities are endless for faction differentiation and combat mechancis and everything....if you aren't into modding then that obviously means nothing to you, but if you are into mods, Rebellion has a lot more potential than diplomacy for really really cool stuff...
I'd definitely agree that for those who already own Trinity, it's pretty poor value content wise. That's not to say it's bad, just that the extent of the additions feels comparable to a not so significant mod, barely more notable than the 'micro-expansions" that came before.
Personally, I don't really care, new stuff is new stuff and since Sins is probably the only game that has stayed consistently in my rotation for 4 years, I'm happy with anything being updated. But if someone thinking about it asks me for an objective opinion, definitely over priced for the content.
I think Starclad felt that Rebellion really would be selling to a very large audience that didn't own sins beforehand...so, the assumption is that most people buying rebellion didn't already buy trinity...is it overpriced for trinity guys? Yes...but how many trinity owners still bought rebellion? A LOT
Yeah, if you owned trinity already than you bought 75% of the game again. In my opinion the micro expansions were a much better model. The $10 discount they gave previous customers should have been at least $20 for it to be fair I think, but then I still got it anyways knowing that so I suppose its a method that certainly works.
Yeah I agree it's poor value for people who already own Trinity. But if not it's okay.
There's little noticeable additions to Trinity despite the 40 dollar price tag.
But it's still a good game nonetheless, the improvements and bugs fixing and optimization made this the definitive Sins of a Solar Empire, just that people who already own Trinity may feel paying too high for what feels like a small expansion. At least that's the impression.
weird. I own trinity. I payed $29 dollars which comes to about 18 pounds sterling, for a game this good? I'm really not complaining. I payed for the new ships and game mechanics, the updated graphics and the larger community, bringing this game into the current age with an open opportunity to move with the modders as they make this new rendition even better. Compared to todays prices on games. The price of a few beers and a packet of fags well spent imo.
More Techs, planets and ships to help differentiate the factions would have made it much more worth it.
theres what, 6 new techs per faction? i was hoping for 15+, with some unique capital ships, unique heavy frigates (heavy combat frigates) and unique structures.
Rather, i got a unique Titan..... and 6 unique techs.
More difference would have made a world of difference.
If I had to guess, Id say that you are mostly paying for the new art.
Diplomacy added, what. 3 models over entrenchment? 3 small diplo crusiers?
Compare that with 6 titans, 3 caps, 3 corvettes, and 3 buildings. how many new abilities? they also redid a gazillion old particle effects, Thats a ton of modeling and texturing and all that good stuff. not easy in the slighest.
There is also more than 6 techs per faction. only six show up on the selection screen. Some researchs were also removed from some of the factions.
I agree.
I would have paid for the Distant Stars mod. In fact i would have paid twice for that what i paid for this. And then you see that in this expansion, they still barely bothered adding any new planettypes or planet traits. Wow, a dwarf planet. Thanks. Not to mention that the bailknight's particle mod still is far superior to Rebellion's "revamped amazing next gen particle effects". I can't even see what my ships are shooting at unless i'm zoomed so far in.
But whaddayagonnado?
The short version, "I don't like this sort of game much."
Ok.
lol i payed 29 dollars for advent phase missile block. I aint complaining because i also found out from some nice gentle man named ekko that the cause of the desyncs is the autosave options being different between players online. Well along those lines but Blair says there posting a new hotfix update soon so the game will be stable.
It isn't actually a desync. Its the autosave code reporting there is a desync when there isn't. I'm just fixing it so it doesn't report that incorrectly.
Reading the first line of his post would disprove that assertion pretty quickly.
Rebellion really isn't that big as far as expansions go.
I can see how teenagers with very little money can be complaining over an expansion pack that indeed does give you a lot less for the money than you're perhaps used to. You could get several entire new games for $40. As soon as they get a job and will notice how little $40 really is that'll all change though.
As a person who don't care about the price-tag and who therefor view the expansion pack for what it is, rather than for its relative value, i'm very pleased. The ship models and weapon animations/effects are the coolest i've ever seen and the new victory conditions alone make the game a lot better.
My only problem with it so far is that titans are absolutely useless as they have much too little HP. As much effort and resources as you need to spend on it i figured they would be about as powerful as fully upgraded starbases. But alas, they're nothing but oversized capital ships.
i bought one more copy yesterday to one of my best friends, incidentally it was his birthday (and i attended his wedding on saturday), so i thought, it could be a good birthday/ one additional wedding gift... he was not much into the original game, but IMHO Rebellion is so much better, so hopefully he is going to like it...
I dont think there is a lack of new content:
- updated graphics
- new capital ships and corvettes
- titans
- new technologies
- new subfactions
- new victory conditions
- new planets
Not exactly Sins 2, but owners of older games get a discount.
I like it a lot. Diplomacy is the only expac that I "skipped," and once Trinity came to Steam I bought it anyway. Diplomacy turned out to be a fine expansion, it just wasn't in step with what I wanted from a game.
I don't see how Rebellion doesn't deliver, though. You've got new classes of ships, rearranged tech trees, subfactions, and shinier hulls. If only one of the above made it in, then I'd see cause for complaint. That would be DLC-sized.
You apparently haven't seen a level 10 Eradica in action. That thing wiped out a atleast 150 supply fleet including half-a-dozen caps and a level 4 Ragnarov, and still had more than 75% of health left afterwards
They start weak, but as they level up they become unstoppable monsters. Unstoppable since they keep their level after being destroyed and rebuilt
On topic, Rebellion is sold for 30€ here. Maybe a bit much, but i wouldn't say it's a rip-off. But still for comparasion, Skyrim's next DLC will be 20€, and by the looks of it will be a much better deal
Fair enough. I understand what you're (and he) are saying but the statement is relative. He expected more. Compared to other games, this should have been better.
By what comparison? EA...with a multimillion dollar development budget and 200+ programmers? Well sure. But that's like comparing my Hyundai with a Mercedes.
Groundbreaking game, fairly unique and by a pretty small team and company.
They gotta make a living.
If it's not enough, wait three years till it's on sale.
Wow....just wow....I am in awe...
Sure, there are some things that I don't like, as I'll mention in a moment, but I'm actually pleased with the new expansion. I love that there are now six factions with unique strengths, ships, and abilities. However, I'm a little biased, because I love the concept - expanding to other planets, creating defenses, building a strong economy, conducting research, and forging alliances, but I also love the variety of research, diplomatic pacts, and artifacts in the game. Don't get me wrong - as much as I love the concept, quality is also important to me, but I still see excellent quality. Ironclad continues to deliver beautiful graphics, enjoyable music, and more.
My friends and I have played many LAN games and, based on those experiences, I can tell you that we would not have had as much fun playing Trinity or earlier. We would have had fun, but less fun.
I've chosen to adapt to the things that I don't like, such as the ship orientation (being nose to nose sometimes), and the inability to define where human and AI players will start from the pre-game screen (for those who don't have time or interest in Forge) - defining player positions for a random map would be difficult as it's being generated on the fly, but if there was a way to at least give each player a number (similar to the team number), telling it which system to put that human or AI in. I'm digressing, but anyway, there are things I don't like, and I'll adapt.
If Ironclad implements any of my suggestions on the forum in Rebellion or a future game, awesome, but if they don't, it won't destroy my experience of Sins.
Bottom line: My loyalty to Ironclad's work remains because they continue to deliver a concept I love with rich quality and beautiful complexity.
I have to agree with the original poster, this is only worth a DLC.
It's the same old Trinity game, with additional ships, ie a Titan!
I was expecting a lot more SD for the amount of time this has been coming out.
It's rather boring TBH and I was expected a 'NEW' and 'Exciting' gameplay experience.
I'm so dissapointed I would like a refund please? I'm also going to petition my refund request with steam.
A longtime Sins fan, but really, really dissapointed!!!!!
