I guess we can wave a fond goodbye to Aero. MS confirmed that it's out for the release version of Windows 8. Looks like pastel solids & squared corners will be the new look. I hate pastels.....like the blue of the forum.....been making my eyes burn for a couple years now.
So I guess the good news is Stardock may have a lot to do in the next few months.
I'm running Windows 7 and don't, at the moment see any reason to get Windows 8, Lantec. Now Windows 9 might be another story.
looking at the screenshot it seems this is still an msstyle and not a variation of classic. can be hacked, will be hacked. will take probably less than one week after the release. first custom skin will be the one that came with the previous release candidates.
windowblinds should work as well, but most skins will look odd with those buttons in the titlebar (just as in Live Mail or Office right now).
I agree with Philly, I'm with windows 7 and will be for some time. I'm not impressed at all with Windows 8's GUI. Quite frankly...it's boring...
Yep, I'm just going to pretend that there is no such thing as Win8 and just keep using my Win7 and Vista64 as if nothing ever happened.
Better yet, just don't say hello to Windows8....hehe..
Read it this weekend... more great news from MS.
Well, a healthy dose of "Thanks, but no thanks" will do wonders for them.
A desktop is not a phone, and a neither is a tablet/laptop-tablet. What goes well for one [as in this case] is a disaster for the other.
i don't think all these things, though annoying as vanilla os, will be a big deal. it's still a Microsoft os, at most things those are more flexible than even Linux. not interested in upgrading, but at the time i will buy a new computer it is very likely there will be a solution for pretty much everything.
as a tablet os it looks pretty good actually. for me iOS is over-using skeuomorphisms (i take metro over stuff like the Reminders app any day). i just hope some company will put it on a nice piece of hardware, right now all the tablets look crappy compared to the iPad.
while i would use a custom msstyle, i think most people in real life might even prefer this over aero.
I think this is good news for OS customization in general. Assuming it CAN be done, I imagine Windowblinds will be able to "fix" the desktop....I just don't want to move to a new OS that seems a step backwards rather than forward.
Luna was the best thing that ever happened to skinning. I only wish they could make Windows even uglier!
I, for one, plan on embracing Windows 8 when it comes out. There will be pain, confusion, probably a few tears, and likely a lot of swearing, but that's life on the bleeding edge. I just gotta.
I'm planning to do a new build in September....can you say Thunder.... so I'm thinking about picking up a copy of Windows 7 that let you get the $15 upgrade so I'll have both when it's time. That way if it sucks wind I can roll back to 7.
the ugly part are the old icons. those need to go away to make the default theme look decent.
but if all these will get changed to a high contrast theme as the address bar already has, it will take a huge amount of reshacking to make the interface look good with any other msstyle.
From a skinners point of view;
if you can´t skin it, It Sucks.
Some people allow buses to run over them and intentionally put holes in their...
Win 7 has been the only OS that Microsoft has created that I actually liked and found relatively stable.
Anyone got a non-MS OS that someone who is fond of Windows 7 and might run on former MS boxes? I quite un-fondly remember creating a Red Hat box (this was mid 90s) from a former MS Dos box and crying because as I progressed with each bit of hardware I had to spend literally hours finding drivers. I'll put up with Win 8 rather than do that again.
it can be skinned.
default means it can be changed, so it is still a kind of msstyle, and not hardcoded. so it can be skinned, at least with photoshop, text editor and resource hacker. hopefully the ribbon will become part of it or at least a shared resource.
windowblinds seem to have some problems though, else somebody would have told how great it works on windows 8.
With 8, I think they did.
Hopefully, then, somebody nearby will put you in your strait jacket before 8 is released, so you can't hold, touch or even play with it... then feed you enough meds until you've forgotten its very existence.
Now I willingly admit that I'm one who openly advocates embracing lunacy when it strikes... but not that much. Nope, and I think embracing Win 8 is a serious illness that will require health professionals and some heavy duty meds to stamp it out... cos heaven forbid it becomes an epidemic and the entire world falls into a state of chaos and disrepair cos near everybody's on meds... and those who aren't don't care cos it's making the rich [f**king bankers].
So Rosco, if I were you I'd forget about Win 8 completely [unless of course you like the idea of being heavily medicated] and get back to some sane thinking before MS gets the idea somebody out there likes it. Really, if you want some meds, just go to your doctor and feign something to get 'em... you don't need the Win 8 crutch to obtain the pills, or even a bit of medicinal weed if yer doc so thinks it appropriate.
Anyhow, you poor deluded man, wake up. Wake up, before you get truly infected and dream about... no... have nightmares about gaudy Metro interfaces and butt ugly tiles. That's right, man, do yourself a favour before you really, really truly need the meds, cos honestly, they're not nearly as enjoyable that way... really.
On a more serious note [or not] I do hope, I really do, that at least one person buys Win 8... so's the uninformed/ill-informed masses, those who simply don't know any better, can refer to an informed opinion that details why Win 8 is crap and should be avoided at all costs for desktop PC's.
Well it feels like my meds are wearing off now, so I'm gonna go and dose up again. I'll see all you good folks later.
I'll say this about that.....done.
Seems like between every good OS, Microsoft has an OS that nobody wants.
Windows 95 - great
Windows NT - nobody used it outside offices
Windows 98 - Awesome
Windows ME - Catastrophic
Windows XP - Great
Windows Vista - AAAGH
Windows 7 - Heeeey! This rules!
Windows 8 - DO NOT WANT
Well we all know that all new PC will ship with it. That alone will not make Microsoft a giant. I'm affraid that many of the younger people may see it like their phones and jump on it. To me is how the companies will juimp to it. Compaines often wait a ibt when a new OS comes out. seeing something this different who know if they will want to jump on it right away or not at all. It may end up being a hit no matter how we don't like it because of customization. There are a lot of i-phone users out there and they are use to flipping the screen and touching it and also having all those apps on the page. We can guess all we want but only time will tell and all I can say for sure is that I'm staying with 7 as I love it for all I do with skinning, changing my desktop and in general it just plain works great.
