I mentioned this in one of my recent posts, but I chose to create a topic that focuses on it. I continue to appreciate the Orgrov Torpedo Cruiser. The combined might of 20 can bring a powerful starbase to its knees very quickly and any other base structures. I played with a friend of mine the other day and, as his fleet drew heat away from my cruisers, I quickly took down the starbase, several hangars, and other installations. He commented several times how impressed he was with the torp damage. I always keep them in their own battle group and have them jump in after the fleet to keep them out of harm's way.
Yeah the Ogrov is really good at it's specialized function.
Anti - ...
Structure?....
WAAAAAAAAYYyyyyyy to OP against structures.
It does make me wonder what I would use against a group of hostile Orgrovs. I might love using them, but I'd hate getting hit by them. What would be an effective counter, I wonder?
Ships. They're structural defense killers, but their ship to ship combat is very weak. Strikecraft probably also work on them, but wouldn't be fast enough to save a Starbase if more then a few Ogrovs show up.
Their ship to ship combat is non-existent. Best counter is fighters. Basically any combat ship except flak is ok against them as well, they're really very squishy.
i've played against a hard agressive ai which spammed the hell out of Orgrovs and LRMs, it was very hard to counter, i ended up having to divide my fleet in half to hold my defenses and counter attack their flanks whenever they attacked. they are probably too powerful at the moment, 20 or so can ravage a planet and leave before taking losses.
Corvettes or SC work wonders vs that comp.
I was going to say, it would probably be wise to have the Orgrov group further divided into two groups, and attack from different sides. Then, even after the enemy destroys one group, the other group can fire several barrages before the enemy reaches them. However, that's not true because a human enemy (not sure what the AI would do) could counter the same way by splitting fighter squadrons between both groups.
Actually I believe ogrovs have Very Light armor which flak counters. you'd just have to micro them in close. However, as you stated fighters are best and corvettes now too as someone else stated.
i always wondered why they dont launch torpedoes at other ships, caps move slow enough...
Had a game today where it was my Orky at a gas giant where it was posted with intent to defend my AI ally who was getting ravaged by the combined force of two hard AI's. Yes, the Orky was fully upgraded but it still slayed probably thousands of ships over the course of the game, including plenty of Orgovs with minimal support from my Vasari Loyalist ally who occasionally sent in a few ships to help it.
When I first set up the Orky, I hadn't yet researched the deflector shield, so it was surviving with 2 damage, three hull, 2 debris vortex, and one fighter upgrade. Because of how immensely powerful Orkies are, they can actually take down spammed Orgovs quite easily if you use them right. The trick is to plow the Orky straight through the enemy fleet and into their Orgovs, allowing all 16 bank targets of the starbase to be unleashed as hordes of phase missiles pour out of it. Then, by simply using Debris Vortex, you can heal yourself from the debris of those you just destroyed. It requires micro, but it isn't hard to do.
I can only think of a couple times when an Orky had my full attention, was fully upgraded, and still fell to a swarm of Orgovs. If I don't micro it though, they'll take it down very quickly.
Um.. Orgovs have light armor, meaning that they get countered pretty directly by flak. Not as well as by Fighters mind you, but still quite well.
Btw, is there any reason why the Vasari have none of these Anti-Structure ships?
The Orky has Assault Deployment and it's first weapons to be unlocked are Disentegrators which are antimodule weapons. In addition, the VR can phase jump their Orkies.
As a mostly Advent player, i hate those things. They can fire outside the range (almost?) every attack of a Transcencia, and bombers take forever to kill them.
When i play TEC i love them for the same reason :hehe:
They have light armor whereas bombers specialize against heavier armor, thus they are supposed to take forever to kill them. Use fighters on your Advent starbases for better effect.
Sounds fair.
D'oh! I figured that since they are "cruisers" they are countered by bombers However, since my strikecraft ratio is alway two fighters per bomber this knowledge will make destroying them a lot easier in the future.
Always remember that the term "cruisers" is lore based and not code based. In game code they are frigates.
So bombers are useful only against capitals and structures? I've been doing it wrong all these years...
