Throughout the past few PvP matches with friends I have experienced extreme corvette "spam", whereby a player builds one or two capitals and supports them with about 60 corvettes.
My friends feel it's totally broken, while I feel it can be combated through the use of flak frigates, the Kol battleship and Hangar Defences if you're TEC. I would assume it's easier to combat corvettes as Advent as my understanding is that they have superior fighter capabilities in general.
How do you guys feel about corvette "spam"?
In Homeworld 1, Cataclysm and Homeworld 2 (to a lesser extent) it was the rule that matches between expert players would seldom go beyond frigates. Actually in Cataclysm and Homeworld 2 in medium/big maps you could see destroyers and cruisers (the equivalent of capships here). Light ships are strategically useful in many ways, and to me, who played those games in the past, it isn't quite strange to see swarms here too.
I am not at all happy with Corvettes as they are currently implemented...
They are very strong against LRFs, and are supposedly countered by flak (which also counter LRFs)...this is the same situation that marginalized LFs in Diplomacy (which were countered by both LRFs and an LRF counter, the HC)...
There is one other instance of this: the bomber...flak counters fighters, and both flak and fighters counter bombers...this counter, however, works out differently than the LRF/Corvette example above because flak is a "soft" counter against bombers and the flak/fighter counter is one the hardest in the game....
This type of counter, where A counters B, and both A and B counter C, is extremely problematic...the only way to prevent C from being marginalized in this relationship is to make A counter B really hard (which just ends up marginalizing B )...
The other fundamental flaw of Corvettes is that they are a jack of all trades unit...with their composite weaponry, they are great against structures, caps/titans, and frigates...with their anti-light weaponry that targets SC, they are also great against SC (particularly bombers)...additionally, they have ability debuffs that weaken their target...it's like combining the best qualities of 3 different ship types into one, and giving it limited weaknesses (basically, flak and AoE abilities)...
Corvettes could be tweaked so that Corvette Spam isn't as powerful, but doing so I don't think will change the fundamental problem with this unit...
Corvetes are so Oped right now its not even funny.
With proper cap ship choosing u dont have to build any other unit....

The way I see them is they shouldn't do much damage on their own. it's the weapon effects that should make them effective. If they're doing the bulk of the damage in a fleet, yes they should be toned down. That's what a lot of people seem to be saying. However, you run a fine line because if all they do is the weapon effects and nothing else, they cant run interference on lone ships/scouts running rampant in your territory; which is one of the best uses of corvettes in my opinion.
However, they are meant to be spamed. 1 or 2 wont do nothing. May as well have nothing there. 10 corvettes is a bare minimum, and they should be balanced around this idea that their strength is in numbers, not individual units.
The real problem is that they improve minidump and lag the game, so maybe the solution is raising supply cost to 3.
I agree with what this man is saying. They are very cost effective early game, but they are very vulnerable, especially against any sorta of AOE attack. And Flak are fairly effective against Corvettes. If anything, I would rather increase effectiveness of Flak instead of nerfing Corvettes.
Yeah, incredibly. Cheesy too, just played a rare (for me) 5v5, nothing but Corvettes everywhere.
after that, I build less and then I don't use corvette, maybe early game, but in mid and late game I might don't touch those corvette since they die easy and not worth my time to keep rebuild, so I rather off good old carrior or LRF, I don't lost much and won many battle like that with little lose.
hmm, it is a bit overpowered early game, because of their effectiveness. But there are ways to deal with it. If you are playing TEC, Flak+Marza(Radiation Bomb) will do, maybe even with some robots.
Mid/Late game corvettes are experience for my titan. Malice+Fracture+Chastic Burst... Oh lord.
corvettes main strength lies in their speed which allows them to attack anywhere in a gravity-well rapidly; unlike frigates, cruisers, caps, and titans. however because of their speed they often end up being exposed to enemy fire alot. another weakness is that they can be targeted by abilities that only affect sc as well as abilities that affect frigates. corvettes may be powerful but they are also very vulnerable. my only only concern is that the shields and hull should be reduced by maybe 33% but other than that i think that they are not OP
Are most of these problems with PVP, or PVE. I admittedly rarely play this as PVP, and have not run into an issue with the AI using corvettes. Honestly they almost never use them, at least in comparison to how often I use them. I do have to admit that the corvettes do seem to make the basic frigates obsolete.
