I know with the new race select screen you get an outline of the new sub-factions for each race and a list of their unique techs and thats fine. However I'd like to see faction-unique techs have a different outline or something in the tech trees to make them stand-out against the normal race techs. Particularly because the pre-game race screen doesn't tell you which tech trees the unique techs are located.
It would make it easier to locate them, especially when you are a new player and you generally want to get your faction-unique techs as quickly as possible to both try them out and to build strats around. Its not a huge problem for the experienced player after a couple of games, but it would help make it easier to link the techs mentioned on the race-select screen with the ones in-game.

By giving the unique subfaction tech icons a different coloured border to make them stand-out. Easy.
I am in favor of this as well. It has been probably a year since I last fired up diplomacy so the trees were not very fresh in my mind and it still took me quite a while to figure out to find the ally-with-pirates upgrade for the TEC rebels. I suppose that I should have guessed it would be under diplomacy, but as it was only a 1v1 game I was in I did not even think to look at the diplomacy tab until the game was already won. For something promoted so heavily as one of their subfaction perks it seems easy to miss.
This was already in production. Just didn't get completed in time for the first beta

This is way too good an idea to not be included. It quickly gives you an overview over the unique skills, and I really think that helps to get an understanding of your team faster. I totally want this.
