Would anyone be interested in doing some roleplay on Sins? Also, in the long term, would anyone be willingly to form a roleplaying "clan" for this purpose? Your responses will be much appreciated.
Update: 2/9/12
Well, just so that people will begin to prep themselves for this project, I have come up with a list of required people to start this thing:
(2) Roleplaying Administrators
-Used to keep the ball rolling, and to try to keep this as organized as possible.
(3) Faction Leaders
-Responsible for managing their own faction.
(9-X) Faction Members
-Seeing as the Sins Population isn't doing so well, the number of faction members that are required for this to occur will be set at the arbitrary number of Nine. And, obviously, they are simply members of each faction.
(1-2) Mappers
-Those who are skilled at using the GalaxyForge.
[Optional](2) Historians
-Those who keep tabs on all of the events that occur throughout this roleplay, and attempt to record it as accurately as possible.
Total: 15
Note: I would like to acknowledge binjured for his previous work, as it has given me some sorta of a base for this, and it also gave me a list of roles that seem necessary.
Anyways, for the moment, I am looking for some people to come up with three factions for this roleplay. The only requirement for a faction to be considered part of the canon is the starting membership of atleast two people. Also, these factions can be of any race(TEC, Vasari, or Advent.). I do hope this project can go forward, and I wish you all good luck on starting the creative process.
Lore Notes:
-We are currently set in the time of Entrenchment. But, we might still use the Diplomacy for the actual in game features.
-We will not be bringing in any stories related to the Vasari Hunters.
Notes: I will begin to work on an OOC Map for this Roleplay, but I am still trying to consult with some others on this topic.
General Operation Notes:
This is sorta the rough summary of what will go on:
Once we get the full amount of players, I am going to open the floor for "Actions". Such an action would be an invasion of another Solar System, as a means of taking enemy territory. This action would be publicly posted, and given a certain amount of time to be reacted to. If, per say, a faction launches an invasion force, the defending faction can decide to send a fleet(One Player Admiral w/ any Lower Ranking Officers) to defend the territory. The battle would be played out in the game itself(Having been arranged, to the best of our ability, to fit both faction's time restrictions), and the winner would then claim that territory. This would be reflected in the Global Map. Afterwards, players may decide to post AARs, or Roleplays that occurred during the battle, or even roleplays that are occurring because of the battle. And, just for the sake of this example, lets just say that the faction that lost the battle wants a truce. Then, the Faction Leader would post a Comms RP in the forum thread, to which the other Faction Leader can respond to.
So, in short, the gameplay will vary from in-thread talks, to Global Events, and in-game Battles.
This will be a key. I often had to stop a storyline because someone wanted to put in their own ideas of who/what the hunters of Vasari were. Too many issues there.
Alright, that seems pretty logical.
Yeah, this is what is causing issues in my DS lore too
But I've already got a better story plotline developed to work off of (think District 9)
Edit: and I do have some map making experience with DS. It would be the same for vanilla too. Need to probably make a galaxy map, and then individual conflict zone maps. Kind of a capture point map style, maybe?
Indeed, that is the plan.
Edit: Along with this:
Extra: What do you guys think about System Invasions? How should they go?
Im roleplaying all the time. i play good smurf and bad smurf
I guess we'll never know where harvard gets us, but seeing my family have it all took the place of the desire for diplomas on the wall.
FYI--a really essential role play rule for this sort of thing is:
"No one may on their own initiative introduce a role play that forces other people to dispense with their own or contradicts already established role play."
Just a thought. I spent some time on a really heavy RP Freelancer server (it was the only one with a large population) and it was constantly mired in fighting over "who could do what" with differing groups of players trying to either become the RP authorities that controlled everything all other players could or couldn't do or tried to introduce RP that was simply ridiculous metagaming, "i.e., "Our faction is the only one that knows powerful ancient aliens and has developed portable black holes that can destroy stars and planets"....etc., etc.
The best RP arbiters and referees are actually those NOT PLAYING--if you can get them.
You need to work out the logistics and wealth cost/generation for out of game calculation and then base battles using only the fleets they have purchased "off board" first.
Some generic, random examples:
If successful, this might be really good for the Rebellion release. A lot of new players might love this sort of thing.
I will say this. I was a GM in a game that I did participate in, BUT my character was not the decider of victories. I made him an essential element in driving the story forward (like escort hero X to location Y) while giving him a crippling handicap that kept him from making waves (he was unwilling to take lives and was played off as unable to figure out the bad guy's motives). If you can play a faction that centers around a neutral role or are a really good stickler to the hardcoded rules, then you have a chance of bridging that gap.
Otherwise, I agree with Sin.
It is possible to referee and be fair while playing. The big problem is when referees are part of prominent player groups with multiple members--that is ripe for conflict. People have to have real integrity to be fair and not side with their faction.
That's where one of two things comes into play. A) You use the game itself to decide conflicts. Either side can review the replay to be sure no cheating occurred and the game mechanics are what they are. B ) You play a role that contributes to the story without engaging in conflict or allowing other members to be part of it.
I do know what you mean, though. There was a game called Visual Utopia a while back (real time browser strategy) where one kingdom won every time because they had the developers on their side and other kingdoms had come to accept that they always won. My brother, friend, and I were booted for nearly killing off every vassal that kingdom had.
There's a bad history in every game that has had admins/developers who played in big, successful clans.
It sounds like you guys need Sins "Galaxy Masters" (like D&D Dungeon Masters).
"And then the ship eating gigantic Hershey bars poured out of the asteroid belt..."
Or some of us try to encourage new players in having fun instead of being asshats.
I'm smelling a thread that's getting off track.
Winnmp makes the obvious choice for GM. Anyone know a scenario that allows him to play as well?
Work out the mechanics first--decide how fleets will be financed and what the 'off board" setup is.
Whoever GMs is gonna be suspect in contested rulings if people are really invested in it. It's a bigger problem if it succeeds than at the start. With saveable games though, it's easy to determine who gets killed. That will help a lot.
That's a big part of my point. Even if he's a GM and gets into it with player X, they fight it out over the game and then replays are loaded up. Tech use, fleet build, and other things are confirmed and we know everything is on the up and up. After that, we just count our losses and move along.
But then it seems like this idea is getting few biters to begin with. So that might be less of an issue than we initially thought.
Hey guys, I am back from a break, and have read over your comments. I would love to GM this roleplay, and I am more than happy to not have a character in it myself. I am currently thinking about whether or not to use captured systems to form a "fleet size", or if we would just sorta put that to the side for now.
Edit:
A very basic idea would make it so that each Solar System represents one possible fleet, and that there would be a certain amount of time that is required to move said fleets from system to system.
I have a concept "first map" if you're interested. Here's the pitch...
"You were in the wrong place at the wrong time and sided with the wrong officer. Now you're a Lieutenant-Commander in charge of a penal mining outpost. They didn't drum you out of the service but pretty much did drum you out of known space. You and your career were destined to rot but then opportunity arrived. Seems hostile parties and factions also have been dumping their castoffs and prisoners in the same asteroid fields and suddenly high command has deemed it appropriate to actually send a small garrison fleet--allowing you to command it. So they have beefed up the dead asteroid you call home now and you are back in the captain's seat of your own ship again with a chance to earn a ticket out of this hell hole--if you can pull out a victory against your opposites who want the same thing and claim their asteroid fields as your own."

In the end, there can be only one
GULAGS
Campaign One, Map One
Hmmm... interesting pitch. I like it.
So, basically, a war over prison space?
It's a scenario to start out your "new captains" that allows them to be in or out of any faction so players are free to choose their own path.
Based on success there, I'd assign them their first ship with a class based on the success in the gulags campaign. Another spoil in competitive campaign victory could be choice of station--winner gets to pick his next starting map position first.
Sort of like you made a bad career move, got sent to be commandant of Stalag 13 and guard "Hogan's Heroes" and then somehow the war makes it to your doorstep and you end up with a chance to make it back to the battlefield.
I would like to join in as well if you guys are actually going to do this.
hey ill join in this, let me know if anything happens
It's a lot of organization to do this and time. This idea gets suggested often but the follow through is usually not there.
Original poster seemed to have firm ideas. Wait and see what he says.
I'm interested
