I would like to start one of those annoying groups that people join to stop something that scares them. MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) has made great progress in getting underage teens to sleep over at the house they are illegally drinking at and deaths have gone down. I too want to stop unnecessary deaths. Maul, even with the -4 to Accuracy per strike is killing our heroes. Making the penalty to Accuracy higher is the only way to stop this senseless violence. I am sure every one of you have lost a hero or soldier to something as puny as a Bear Cub. It just doesn't make sense. My wife recently came down with gangrene in her left hand from being mauled to death by a bear. This is no laughing matter. We need to stop this! We can stop this! I am asking the community to post here your tragic stories so that the powers that be will either nerf the damn thing or only give it to Uber-Bosses at the end of the game where it belongs. Thank you and good night.
Horray!
No wonder they are Mauling everyone if you are tweaking it!
Actually, that's my general strategy to beat my enemies (with logical adaptations according to circumstances, like having a decent tank Champion). Works quite well. Included the part that you ignored in which I said about "Also too: don't get near mauler in the strategic map." and that I follow until my army is ready. But in general, my basic layer of strategy remains the same for most of the combats no matter the enemy. That's not very good for a strategy game... and I'm a "casual" (but appareantly not as casual as "casually casual") and bad player. Imagine if I were good! I blame Frogboy and his still youngling AI... and maybe some hundreds of hours of WoM.
I didn't say that Maul didn't need tweaking but what's wrong with having to use the brain to beat certain types of encounters*? Must all of them be just like the bandits? Yes, Maul needs tweaking (I repeat it because apparently, I must have been saying "Please, increase Maul's power" lately).
Nevermind.
* well, at least until you figure it out
Maul is fine IMO. Frogboy said they found some error in the code and with -4 accuracy after each attack it should be managable.
Personally, I see nothing wrong with heroes getting mauled by cave bears. Roughed me up pretty good. Lol.
I would personally rather see a -25% modifier or -33% to accuracy each time it hits. -4 is too static. What about monsters that level up and gain extra accuracy? What about modders who want to use it?
As spokesman for the bears I'd rather see the ability removed from the humans, and left to the bears. After all, I can now maul santa's elves ( thats where I got the hat...).
Give it to the bears only witha -4 to hit... it should be special, and bear-only.
The solution is obvious when you think about it. Leave maul as it is but add in Chuck Norris...
A static -4 to accuracy is stupid. I want a percentage cut.
Even a percentage cut would be silly. You are pretty much always guarenteed 2 hits, which is better than double attack without having to expend any level up points on it. The weapon damage can be tweaked around all over the place but it still runs the risk of being abused by super strength champions. The 'maul' effect is the problem, not the weapon that it is attached too. Fix maul to be balanced with other specials and feel free to add it to any weapon you can think of.
There is also the secondary issue that with maul the way it is currently there is no way to tell your champions are at risk. It's not like there is a big glowing neon sign above the enemy champion that says "Attacks may be more damaging than they appear" like there is when you run into a champion/unit with 40+attack.
Open-ended abilities are just a bad idea. If there's no cap on the # of hits, there's always a chance that you enter a battle and you or a monster with Maul insta-kills a target. No ability should have that level of variance.
still not enough, the thread started made a wrong argument, i never EVER lost a hero against a bear
the problem is on weapons
since heroes has a LOT of accuracy the penalty doesnt quite cover the op of the weapon bonus
its basically like a triple attack on EACH attack
but most of all with a lucky streak its like a 1 shot to ANYONE, its just too op, why there should be a weapon so strong?
if you really want to keep a infinite lucky loop weapon (and you shouldnt ) make a malus to accuracy AND dmg, each next successful attacfk should deal 20 % less dmg
even this way it sounds too OP, why there should be a weapon that with a lucky roll does 100+80+60+40+20=300% dmg (even if it averages a bit lower than that) ?
for monster i think its balanced, players have much more dodge and can kite, cast spells etc etc
its right for a bear to have some good skill since its the only thing they have
Just as MADD fights against sleeping while driving [PAM] should take up fighting the totally unrelated instance of this happening in FE:
Players against broken explore. Routinely, my scouts just stand there , after repeated button pushes...
This is serious and [PAM] shouldn't stand for it.
With the next patch, the world shall be filled with the lamentations of a million bears.
R.I.P. Niobhe, your death will be avenged... Soon.
I think the accuracy penalty should be changed to - 5.
I can't join a group who's acronym is named after a cooking spray.
@klatxton499, you are already in the group. We don't take volunteers, we take prisoners.
A maximum number of attacks sounds right to me. The AI also needs to have this logic somehow: Enemy has maul, enemy has high accuracy, enemy should be avoided or stunned. I know you are working on Tactical this next week so I just though I would throw that out there.
listen, bears are dangerous... go punch one and see what happens
I killed Torax (that big earth elemental thingy) with my sovereign. Solo.
At level 10.
BECAUSE MAUL IS OSSUM.
I saw the double nerf (to the weapons and the skill) and thought "this is nice, but clearly not enough".
At the very least the negative to accuracy needs to be percentage based, and something more like -50% cumulative (-50%, -75%, -112% aka no chance). All the laughable -3 accuracy and lower damage do is make it so I have to go and make a sandwich while my sov hits nonstop low damage against something until it dies. Instead of making it annoying to use but still overpowered it should be fun to use and not overpowered.
Why go punch one... when you can send someone else to do it for you?
I like the idea of Maul I, Maul II, Maul III. Maul I starts out to where every instance of Maul is -6 accuracy at 50% damage. Maul II is -4 Accuracy at 75% damage, and Maul III is -3 Accuracy at 100% Damage. Each reoccurence of the Maul effect gets the Accuracy penalty added to the previous one as is currently designed.
Except maul is a weapon ability not a champion trait... either way repeated attacks with no hard limit are unwise.
Which would be about 5-ish hits on average. Which is still NUTS.
I haven't run in to any mauling weapons since 0.77. But at least as far as the bears go, I think 0.77 has it about right. Bears are still dangerous and rather scary because maul can potentially kill a level 1, 2, or 3 hero in one round. But the odds are you'll only get badly torn up. My experience was that the big bears got 2-3 swipes in on average, whereas the cubs would get in 1-2 swipes. This felt like the right balance to me.
