Derek and I have been passing on the messages and emails and of course various posts on the impressions of Elemental: Fallen Enchantress beta 1. Thank you for the kind comments and encouragement. We really appreciate it. You can imagine how anxious we were about this beta release.
We will be lurking the forums (and third party forums as well -- Si vous savez ce que je veux dire) to gather as much information as possible on everything from bugs, user interface tweaks, game play suggestions, to feature requests and sitting down to determine what to put in there.
We are still some months away from release. There is work to be done but it appears we’re on the right track. There’s still a lot of work ahead for us to do. Lot of cool stuff to get in there and of course lots of bug fixing.
The current plan is to open the beta up a bit more next week. Eventually, everyone who bought Elemental: War of Magic in 2010 or earlier will be in the beta.
With any luck, by the time we release, Elemental: Fallen Enchantress will be the PC fantasy strategy game that players were looking for. Stay tuned!
Congrats on a great beta start. It really is a solid game already! Expectations are enormous now, release should be a killer game!!
I managed to work in about 2 hours to get some hands on with the beta and lo and behold I wasn't ready to stop when I need to get to bed (to make it to work today.)
The new UI is great all around, the stream lining of different aspects like research and population management is great (less busy work more tough decisions to make.) Character/City leveling is great.
I didn't run across any bugs or crashes but I am on the look out for them.
Great job! Too bad I'm terrible at it and the Magnar were having their way with me last night.
If you're talking about CanardPC, the atmosphere went from "low expectations" to cautiously optimistic, or even enthusiasm.
So far, it's a terrific beta 1. It will require quite a few balance passes (I've already started tinkering with XML) - btw, you were wrong about mods being disabled. The core XMLs are. And it's a good thing to have mod enabled because we can actually tinker around and give you educated balance feedback after experimenting.
Anyway, you once said that someone who didn't like War of Magic wouldn't like Fallen Enchantress. I think you were completely wrong, and that's a good thing.
Congratulations.
WHERE'S MY FREAKING CANCER, YOU LIAR? I WANT MY MONEY BACK!
You can thank yourselves guys. You avenged yourselves here. The fundamentals are there so keep going and polishing and refrain from making drastic redesign decisions. The four focuspoints that were pointed out in one of the journals turned out to be an excellent basis.
FE is really better then wom, but still i miss dynasties
Panstasd:Game\Data\English\ElementalDefs.xml --> <EnableDynasties>1</EnableDynasties> Some screens are missing, but the core functionality should still be there. Have fun!
Indeed the praise is well deserved. FE is turning out GREAT. As a Veteran of WoM though I do have a few small complaints I hope will be addressed before the release build. Here are my suggestions.
1. Put the Dynasty System BACK IN, please. The Dynasty System was one of the best things about WoM. It made WoM stand out and it's absence is definitely missed by many I think in FE. It could use a few tweaks from it's iteration in WoM. It shouldn't be used as a General Factory. I think being able to get married and have children and then to use those children either as Generals or as bargaining chips for diplomacy should DEFINITELY be included in FE.
2. There are some graphical errors that appear in the FOW that are very distracting. It makes the lights in the FOW look pretty bad. These should be hidden if possible until the player actually reaches that spot on the map.
3. Intelligence should grant Some Kind of Damage bonus for mage characters. Basing almost all the damage off of just how many shards you control and maybe a magical weapon isn't enough. By mid game and into late game warrior characters are far more powerful than mages in terms of damage. Of course I'm not saying mages should necessarily able to do as much damage as a warrior with a melee weapon, but there is a definite gap and spell damage should be increased slightly IMO. Intel should grant at least a small damage bonus for spells cast by the mage.
4. (this is probably a bug) I notice a city only gets bonuses from the one tile it's founded on and not from any of the other tiles that you put buildings on. I would assume that all the tiles used that are built on should provide their bonuses to the city.
Congrats are WELL Deserved for FE so far. I played it until 5 o'clock this morning, slept for a little over 4 hours, and now I'm about to start playing again. FE is infinitely more fun than WoM and if you weren't already giving it to me I'd gladly shell out a good $30 or $40 bucks for it. It's really fun. Well done all around to Derek and all the team that made this happen.
I thought modding was out for this build? Or will we have to change it every time it updates? I like that's able to be enabled . This is great news.
Off to a great start fellas!
It's too early to tell if FE is MOM 2 or not - but its not too early to tell that its great fun. Thanks for all the hard work.
I especially like:
1. the ability to select game paramaters such as monstor difficulty, resource density, etc before you start. Wow talk about making the game replayable!
2. Improvement in loot found. In EWOM (without Heavenfall's mods) after the first game loot was essentially boring. It looks like the FE variety of loot will be much greater. Another great add to replayability.
3. More to explore on the map. What a great improvement! In all great 4X games the side battles, etc should be interesting enough to sometimes deflect you from the main grow and take over plot. FE does this very well.
4. Beta stability. So far very good.
I'm sure I will have more positives to add later.
The only negatives so far are:
1. I miss the dynasty system.
2. I'm still haven't sorted out what is going on in the cities. However, this may well just be inexperience with the new game.
ty will try it right now
Congratulations to a successful beta launch Brad & Co! It's good to see I was completely wrong.
I only played the Tutorial yesterday and boy what A difference from the first game.
I'm in love., Can't wait for 4pm so I can play some more!!
Don't knock mage chars. Growth+archers= death, and doesn't take a whole lot of research to pull off. There's probably a lot of other nasty combos out there. The only thing lacking in magic is raw pew pew type stuff, which should be added to the end of the trees down the road hopefully.
In that state, FE is much more enjoyable than WoM ever was.
Ever.
And I'm in since the first first beta.
The only thing I miss is a "silly" splash screen at start
Put it in as an easter egg somewhere...
This train is moving in the right direction now. Very much enjoy the way the world feels more alive !!
Yes.
Please.
It's a must-have feature.
EDIT : "You head north..."
I never played WoM. Could I see this "silly" splash screen?
Just so we are sharing strategy:
1. I got a fire mage and started leveling her. (She was acquired late in the game and is now level 15)
2. I took every trait to make Int. and spell damage higher. (Evoker is your bread and butter here)
3. I have 2 Fireshards. (Pretty common on a medium map)
4. I can take down Giant Scrap Golems in 3 hits. (45 per hit at only 10 mana)
Anyone find a hero combo that can top that?
I also miss the 8-bit intro from WOM's beta. There was just something.. about it. But anywho, thus far I'm enjoying the game greatly. The world as Frogboy has said is very, very much aggro to my presence. I escorted a noble back to her estate, and in so doing earned myself about an extra 10 turns in trying to Metal Gear Solid -don't wake daddy- my way back to my home city. Required a reload or two.. Huh? What was that? Attack of the giant spider army and/or giant fire elemental!
There is one thing I'd like to mention though, and that is FE seems to have retained an oldie but goldie from WOM, and that is unit selection via shift/ctrl clicking to group your champions. If you hold shift or ctrl to group 'em, the mouse lags as you drag it from one portrait to the other. Oh and not a bug, but still just as vicious.. Yithril and Kraxis, upon discovering me didn't even say hello. Just goodbye. With large armies. My body, was not ready.
So in summary.. no Stardock, thank you.
I'm confused. why is Blair thanking World of Warcraft in the thread title?
This is a beta? I honestly think this beta is better than many of the recent "final" games I have purchased. I am having great fun thus far and no crashes. Just the fact you have a tutorial WITH video...wow...well done so far!
