okay I recently purchased the object desktop, I found some themes I like in windowblinds and they download fine but I have also found a couple that are .zip files that don't download properly... so what do I do about this?
thanks
What do you mean they don't download properly?
Which links?
some windowblinds come in a zip file as they may have other elements provided for the blind. if you can open the zip file, with something like winzip, just double click on the wba file and it will self extract. hope this is what your question is about.
I've had oddness over the years where a browser renames the .wba to .zip too. Renaming back works.
okay how do I rename back? like what does that even mean?
Could be corruption of a zip file, in which case it won't open.
Delete it and try to download again.
If the error repeats, please give us the url of the skin you are trying to download.
A lot of people upload their Windowblinds in a .zip instead of .wba file for various reasons, me included. Just download the .zip, double click on it (you don't need any other software as opening .zip's is built into Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7). Locate the .wba file in the window that opens up and double click on it to install it into Windowblinds, and then apply it. Pretty simple.
I know that if you have downloaded a blind from DA ( oh horror ) the .wba gets automatically renamed to .zip.
If you extract the files in the zip and see a folder with a bunch of .tga graphic files, then renaming the extention .zip to .wba should fix it.
First, kudos for finding and using a proper forum to post to. Lately, everyone wants to post to Support and those guys need their sleep.
Second, get used to opening zips to get to the "good stuff". As LightStar said, many skinners upload as zips to include permissions, walls, docks, etc. The .wba format is great, in that they self-install on download but afaik, it is the only skin to do so. Everything else will self install for the most part by double clicking on its file (like cursors, dreams, Icon Packages, etc.)
Third, a forum post starting with WTF is usually a precursor to a whiny complaint, not a legitimate new user question, as yours is. Stating the nature of your problem in the title will get better responses, imho. (although, as a nosy bunch, we all look anyway, lol)
Fourth.
Don't ever do that!
Lastly, Welcome to WinCustomize, jhoward7414. Have fun, hang out, download 'til your fingers bleed and if you have any more questions, fire away. There is always someone around to help out.
Thanks everyone for the help, I guess I actually asked the wrong question in a way, the WB files mostly seem to download fine its the wallpapers, logons, and Icon packs that seem to mostly be in .zip format. the two that I tried before originally posting this thread where surf n turf and Titans forge, those where both wallpapers and logon.
I followed the advice of extracting them in winzip and found that they are .jpg files so I was able to add them to my library by saving them in my photo gallery. is this ok, is there a better way to do this?
Again thanks for the warm welcome and all the help !!
Sorry about the thread name but I tend to name threads on the first thing in my head that applies and really WTF was what I was feeling I appreciate you all looking and sharing despite the whiney brat headline....
For walls that match or go with a WB, you can open WB config, go to the Wallpaper tab and drag the downloaded wall into the preview window. It will automatically be placed in C:\Users\Public\Documents\Stardock\WindowBlinds\Wallpapers and show in the list. Then you have easy access to them when changing blinds.
I just love this feature. (Thanks, Neil!)
As you may know, the photo gallery is also accessible in WB config, but I like the matching walls to go in the WindowBlinds folder. I only add the ones closest to my resolution and save the rest elsewhere, in case I need them.
My tip of the day...no charge.
Get 7zip HERE. It's free, safe, easy, and will open most zip, rar and other compressed/zip files. (Quite a few DeviantArt skinners use WInrar and 7zip for skins and wallpapers, etc)
IF you do or must, scan the folder with your anti-virus and Malwarebytes FIRST. DO NOT download .exe files (Especially Rainmeter Skins). And look for skins that are featured in a group. Most of the groups will verify they are safe before they even feature them.
