As I figured out and tested here, Sins already has a way to share custom maps over MP. Simply slap the map into your (on Win7, for reference) ...AppData\Local\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\MapDesigner folder and host using the map from there. Once you run the map, everyone who doesn't have the map already will dl it, and it will work. I've tested this on the latest version of Entrenchment; I'd assume it works for Trinity/Diplomacy as well.
Unfortunately, I tested it on my end and it seems that once you actually start the game the map fails to load correctly and both players are defeated.
I'm pretty sure I've screwed around with this in the past. I've compared the .txt map files side-by-side and was never able to figure out exactly what allows Map Designer maps to auto-download but not real Galaxy Forge custom maps.
Indeed. Seems that the Map Designer folder works with any random map; whether it be one made ingame or via Notepad.
Further, I advise that the Devs add custom map sharing to Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion.
