The Sins of a Solar Empire Multiplayer GalaxyForge Compilation is a project that I am spearheading on behalf of the community. This is a community effort, and not specifically my project. Our goal is to create a lean selection of popular galaxyforge maps for multiplayer, and encourage multiplayer gamers to download it. In order to achieve this, we're going to need contribution and collaboration between content creators and the multiplayer gamers who will be using the compilation.
Background
Sins shipped with approximately 50 premade maps available for singleplayer and multiplayer. However, most of these maps proved unsuitable or unpopular for multiplayer. Today, the vast majority of games played online use randomly generated maps. GalaxyForge maps have traditionally not been a viable alternative, since ICO does not support file transfer. This has left virtually no recourse for people seeking to play non-random maps in multiplayer.
The goal of the compilation project is to create a single standardized download with popular galaxyforge selections for multiplayer. We would encourage everyone who is active in the multiplayer community to download it. This would allow people to freely host from this selection of custom maps. The number of maps in the compilation would be approximately 30; enough to provide a great deal of variety, but not so much as to be overwhelming or to crowd the menu.
What Kind of Maps?
This is designed to be a multiplayer compilation, and as such we're looking for maps that would popular in multiplayer. This means reasonably sized (5-15 planets per player) and relatively well balanced. It should be the kind of map that doesn't take too long to complete. Really, so long as it's well designed it will be considered, but the key will be how the multiplayer testers receive it.
Stage 1 – Submissions
The first step in our plan is to have open submissions in which any map maker can submit their work for inclusion. We'd like you to restrict yourself to your ten best maps. If we get too many respondents, we may have to reduce the number of submissions allowed. I'm going to put up a tentative deadline of 11:59 PM September 30th (Pacific time) for submissions, but I may extend that if we're not yet ready to proceed to stage 2 at that time. If you have map preview images, you may submit them as well. To submit your work, just post in this thread and include a link to where we can download your maps.
Stage 2 – Comprehensive Release
We will release a beta version of our project with no more than 100 maps. We will then open a thread for discussion in which players can talk about multiplayer matches they had on specific maps and we can decide whether those maps are suitable for the final instalment. The stage 2 process will continue for some time until we have reduced the number of selected maps to approximately thirty.
Stage 3 – Final Compact Release
Once we've decided on our thirty maps (give or take), we'll make a formal release and encourage all active members in the multiplayer community to download it. We will continue to accept further submissions for consideration and in future versions may add new content, but this will otherwise be our final release. We will maintain both the Comprehensive and Compact release version into the future.
Thanks for your attention!
Before a new galaxy forge was only released when the formats of the maps themselves changed (making old maps obsolete), and with this new "trigger" system stuff and possible more with Rebellion its quite likely that will be the case again.
Ah, I see. If that's the case, two packs should probably be made; a Diplo/Ent one, and a Rebellion one.
Yeah, I'm not going to do another revision until we know more about what changes will be coming in regards to GalaxyForge in Rebellion. This project isn't necessarily dead, but it's definitely dormant for the moment. Still, feel free to provide a link to your work in this thread if you want to.
My hope is that Rebellion will offer a way for us to download maps in-game, thus maps can be shared informally and there will be no need to maintain a compilation.
I'd love to see this. I've seen it work in other games before, and it really has a huge impact on the MP community. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this already in play for games made in the ingame map maker? If s- Wait I just had an idea. Has anyone ever tried putting a map in their MapDesigner folder? As if this works for the ingame map maker... It should be calling on that folder, and thus theoretically should work for any map.
Edit: Hows about let's test this!
Edit 2: If anyone's got Ent, I got a game called 1v1 Join! up, see if you can join it.
Edit 3: It works! If you want to share maps through MP/play with people who don't have the map, just put it in (on Win7): AppData\Local\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\MapDesigner
Yes it is, but the map-maker is still random.
@_@
All this time... it's been doable... wow... I am speechless
WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF THAT!?
Well, life is odd like that at times. The map doesn't seem to be dl'd to the other player's comp, but you can indeed run a match this way. Not sure why you didn't think of it, but hey, now that you know it works, use it!
Hmmm... I just tried it out, and the map didn't run properly. Both players got a military defeat the moment the game actually started. So it seems this doesn't work. And to think I had my hopes up
Not sure what you're doing wrong; I put in a custom random and it worked just fine on load.
Edit: For reference, as it was to be a quick test, it was simply a Small Random Map with a player starting with a RandomIceVolcanic instead of a TerranHome. Didn't actually play it; just loaded it to see if it worked, and it did.
Dunno, I dumped the contents of my galaxyforge folder into my MapDesigner folder, booted up my laptop and cleared out its galaxyforge folder, and then had it join a LAN game hosted by my PC. It was able to join correctly, but when I tried to actually play the map the game didn't load correctly and both players were instantly defeated. I tried a different map, and the same thing happened. Don't know what more to say about the matter.
I tried this over ICO. Not sure if that makes a difference.
I tried it on ICO. Both players instantly lose, no map is displayed, the only option is to quit.
That's exactly what I got when I tried it over LAN. Sorry, shouldn't have used the term "crashed".
That's... Odd. It worked perfectly fine for me... Perhaps the fact that it was a random-generated map, even if a custom/edited one, was the difference?
That's exactly what happened when I was trying to change the map in the background of the Sins menu. Galaxy Forge maps failed to work but editted random maps worked just fine.
Still, if they can send random maps over then the game clearly has everything needed to transfer any other map as well.
in my experience the galaxyforge maps DO crash/defeat when in the map designer folder as do the designer maps in the galaxyforge folder.
harpo
Seems like the engine has problems with "pre-rendered" maps then. This brings up the question on how to screw with maps while leaving the IsRandom (or whatever the tag is) set to TRUE.
Though yeah, it seems that nearly everything is in place for this to work. It really should be implemented for Rebellion.
Post it at every opportunity (that's on-topic, of course) to remind the devs that this is a high priority for us. This should be implemented in Rebellion, and it would do wonders for both the modding and multiplayer community to be able to share these creations easily.
Screw that, I say we take the Cato approach (even though it would be easier to do with a signature feature).
Further, I advise that the Devs add custom map sharing to Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion.
That would get the point across.
Not sure if this is it or not but, Darvin, for your maps, are you setting a set number of players? otherwise it will keep it at 10/10 and randomly have who ever is playing have a 2/10 chance of actually having a starting place(or 3/10, 4/10, however many starting positions you placed)
