I always thought that Sins was lacking in the planet type department... Just four planet types (And the Gas Giant, which barely counts), plus three asteroids, dead, normal, and pirate base.
So I was wondering, we will see new types? Most logical one is barren (No, it is not useless, if an asteroid is good, so is a barren world) Some diversity would be nice...
It is weird when we cannot make a realistic Sol system with the available planets...
Thanks in advance for any answer.
They have not announced any but the lack of planets is a bit unfortunate. But many modders have changed this. Many mods out there have more planet types.
Yes, and the different planet types in the mods really do add a lot to the tactical layout of the game, and they just "feel right". An easy way to improve the random feature for online multiplayer as well.
More planet types like Water, Rock, Forest, Jungle, and Ecumenopolis are definitely needed, and Gas Giants, one of the most prominent planetary types in both sci-fi and reality, need to be more prevalent and useful.
Adding planet types (as standard) would be an easy way to add features to the Rebellion expansion. It seems like a no-brainer.
Perhaps we should make our thoughts known to the Dev's,hmm?
I want rock, paper and scissors planets!
...but seriously, an option to specify planets in online random map setups would be cool.
In-game map maker, you can specify what type and how many. No need to wait for an expansion.
Its really sad that this feature doesnt get used more via ICO. Since these maps auto transfer it would be an easy way to make a 'semi balanced' random map.
There are some flaws with planet placements with map maker, like HW are usualy near the edge of the Star system and tend to have just 1 or 2 phase lanes, Ive not played with it much but there might be a way to fix that.
Also I am certaint that it gives you a roid 1 jump away from your HW no matter the map layout.
There is actually no guarantee that there will be an asteroid one jump from your HW according to Darvin.
There is always an asteroid and either a volcanic or ice planet next to your homeworld. USUALLY they have a phase lane connecting them directly to your homeworld, but I have seen it many times myself where there isn't one and even though it's right there next to you, you have to take the long way around.
More planets, great idea.
What I would also like to see happen is assigning the right home worlds to each fraction. Vasari gets volcanic, TEC gets terrain and Advent get Desert. Of course, they would need to be balanced, for example, A desert planet to a TEC player would mean more logistic slots whereas a terrain planet to an advent would mean more logistic slots etc.
I would also like to see one super planet in the middle of the map, for example instead of a silly pirate base, how about build another civilsation in the middle of the map? like a galactic council? heavily guarded but if captured, allows increased income and culture if desginated capital planet?
A King of the Hill concept? I like that idea.
Yeah, though I'd prefer an actually king of the hill game mode, rather than just a powerful planet like he suggested.
Yes to adding at least 1 type of new planet to the game.
I would like for there to be a bar select for balancing. Sometimes you want a completely random game with surprises, while for multiplayer you might want a more balanced game. Anyone that's played the game with the mods that add extra planet types doesn't want to play the game without afterwards.
Having many planet types, some of them being completely useless, or even dangerous to visit (eg high radiation, ancient robotic spacecraft, super cute space ponies, and so forth) add to the feeling of exploration.
That would be great, but it's probably too much to ask for.
Yeah, more planet types would add to the immersion.
I also like the King of the hill idea. Power worlds with large bonuses would be interesting. You could have them be only accessable through wormholes, so that a player would have to decide whether to rush the tech or build up and take over other systems instead.
Yeah ocean planet would be cool, not 100% water, but like 90% or so, lower pop than terran etc. Jungle planet would also be nice.
Unique homeworlds would be awesome. Advent would definitely feel more balanced if they had extra logistics at their home.
And of course fix some MP features related to map (Like good stock maps for team play) and bring back the resource option! Resource option was great! (Back in the day you could set low resource - neutral start with 1 mine, asteroids 2, medium - neutrals 2 mines, asteroids 3, and high - neutrals 3 mines asteroids 4, and of course random which is what it is today)
I would really like this as well, but if they don't the vast collection of planet available in the simplest mods out there will serve this purpose. I'm willing to bet that someone will have modified a planet and graphics mod to rebellion withing 24 hours of the beta release. You HAVE to love the sins modding community
actually galactic civilization 2 has most planet types if not all: Toxic, Aquatic, Gas, green, ..um forgot the rest.
Yes to more planet types ... Distant Stars mod has a lot of these combined together into one convenient place.
Throwin' in my support, too.
SOASE needs more planet types... you wouldn't even have to change the tech trees. You could make new types just subsets of existing types. Ie: Rock would be a more habitable subset (and hence unlocked by) volcanic colonization, etc. Just more variety to look at, and extra little perks (and flaws!) inherent in the world themselves would add a lot to the game.
And triple to Gas-Giants! They should be made useful: Trade bonuses (via star base trade capability!), higher crystal extraction on orbiting extractors (many gas giants have crystals floating around in them, just look at Uranus and Neptune!), gravity issues that make it harder or more erratic to move around in the grav-well, the ability to build TWO star bases, maybe make gas-giants similar to Dead-Asteroids, so that you can claim them and build tactical structures, etc, etc, etc!
Just... something.
While we're at it, let's not forget about debris fields and plasma storms and the like, either. Honestly, I'd like to see individual planets worth more, but have less of them - while adding a lot more of the various fields and what not with interesting aspects to them - they'd make for great battlefields and ambush sites and what have you. Having 90,000 planet(oid)s around a single star is a bit insane. More stars, less but more valuable planets, more random fields and the like!

I would like to see Gas Giants have lots of resources (crystal AND metal) but be very unmineable until a star base WITH colony pods is built in thegravity well to house the miners.
Makes the base less effective in combat to make it a tactical choice. This is good. Even better would be a new type of base intended for this, but I'm not holding my breath re that.
I second that idea, it's great.
