Basically this is for all the players that wish they could of been in the first dominion 3 game and missed the chance or had some bad luck and were knocked out of the first game.
Guidelines:
1) yea,its a noob game,so lets see if we can keep it to under 10 MP games played. Naturally exceptions can be made hence the guidelines category. just please be honest and state your experience level upfront.
2) We'll vote on a map to use and what mods if any.
3) Feel free to suggest away here,I'm just starting the bandwagon not trying to be the band leader.
Players:
1) Abysia player........... EmersonPF
2) Arcoscephale............. Rasael
3) Caelum.................... louist
4) C'tis........................ ghostwes
5) Marverni.................. Tophat
6) Niefelheim............... Elana
7) Sauromatia............. bpalczewski
8) Ulm....................... Shadowtounge
If all they did was add value then they wouldnt be banned
Obviously it was a balance decision, how much harm balances out good. A few of them lost, and then others volunteered to join them. They have their own forum now which is a better thing for both groups.
Im also not sure how "main modders" would be defined. They arent the ones with the most popular mods. But they did mod alot and test some extremes in the mod commands which made them good for any answers you could get from them
makes sense.... i'm not a modder (except for a tiny bit, a while back with the const set in Oblivion). Having their own 'space' makes it easier to keep from stepping on others toes... sounds like 'new' patch is not worth restarting the game... is fine by me.
Is there any way to get the Dom3 manual in a e-format (PDF, word, etc.) to read on the PC? All I can find is the turtotial. Web search doesn't find anything....
,
Ask and you shall recieve.

That's a browser based pdf. I suggest you save the pdf itself to your hard drive, though.
... that you joy may be full! thanks louist..
Guys, the map has placed Elana and I only two provinces away from each other. While I can't think of a better neighbour than Elana, did we not pick this map so that this kind of thing would not happen? With only eight players, 16 provinces per player (?), and hand-picked starting locations, I can't understand why this would happen...
Actually there is only ONE province between Ghostwes and I. I liked starting in the corner... but I also don't want to start out boxed in, either...with GW between me and the rest of the map.... .. perhaps I am misinformed? Pleas, might a neutral person take a look at the set up, and make sure we all are spread out somewhat evenly? Appreciated greatly. BTW, GW, thank you for kind comment.
How can you tell you are 2 provinces away from each other?
There is no dominion outside of the cap yet, and unless you have shared starting provinces (usually a bad idea, but anyway) there's no way to know.
Now it's possible you do know this, and it's possible that wonderloss made a mistake in assigning starting locations. I guess he can confirm it, or explain it, or whatever.
But still, how do you know this exactly?
As to the 'split'...
It was not about 'value' unless you mean 'value' to the forum, and in that case it was an utterly arbitrary and incredibly silly reason to ban Sombre in the first place. Mods are mods, use them or don't, the inherent value of them isn't a reason to ban anyone. As to who does what in modding... I admit, I don't pay much attention to shrapnel forums, but CBM is gone, what else is there really? Nation mods are a dime a dozen, and great or terrible is a matter of opinion (and balance). Other mods are jointly posted at both sites. I dunno, I've gotten more info on the invision forums and chat than shrapnel, but ymmv. I don't care to start a debate either, we're nominally using these forums for our communication, and I'll happily use whatever IRC or chat people are comfortable with. Or just use PMs. I just like to 'discuss' things
You haven't been able to scout yet have you or see dominion candles or province names? How can you know you really are this close? I suspect you have been doing some under the table diplomacy!
Elana and I discussed starting positions, yes, along with discussing what kind of gems we are looking to trade etc. I was more reluctant to give away my starting position in the other game, but I was not too worried about doing so with Elana, based on my experiences with her. We also started a few provinces away from each other in that game, by the way.
I don't see any rules preventing this early diplomacy... did I miss something?
no no, you are free to give up whatever information you desire
As you noted, it's not always wise, but it's your call.
Are you sure it's 2 provinces on the map and not just in number?
Anyway, if that's the case I have no issues restarting. With a different map
Indeed I had one made for an 8 player game which 'should' have starts correctly assigned.
Well, I like this map well enough, but if you have one specifically designed with eight players and where this kind of thing is guaranteed not to happen, then yes I think I would rather restart, if that's OK with everyone else.
Also, if you think it better, I would certainly be willing to abide by rules such that we do not start diplomatic discussions until we encounter each other in game. For me, I don't really get into the role-playing aspect of these kinds of games, so I don't really care too much about the "realism" of it all, but perhaps it would add a level of intrigue, dunno. Whatever the consensus is. My discussion with Elana was fairly innocuous, however: "How much should I charge for item X", "Want to trade astral for death"... that sort of thing. Probably not wise, agreed, but hey... newbie game
Well, your discussion was fine, I've approached players about trades as well. We didn't stipulate anything for how communication should be held, so I think it's best to just leave it up to each player to decide how they want to conduct it.
I'm in the shrap chat right now for anyone who want's to pop in there, I made a dotm room even
Restarting is fine, but we'll need to make sure everyone is on board with it, and have wonderloss explain what happened with the map.

The map...
93 land which is 11.5 per player, so maybe too small. Lots of chokepoints though, and spread starts anyway.
http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/showthread.php?t=43144&highlight=land+legends
Is another one, though I've not vetted it for 8 starts. But it is bigger with 16+ land per player at 8 players.
That one looks interesting. I'm for it.
I only brought up mods because the other guy asked how the best modders could get banned when they were adding to the value of the game. But I agree that nation mods dont mean much. They dont tend to sell games. Banning rude people from the sales forum probably does. And those people now have a forum with no nicety-nice rules so Im sure they are happier also.
Besides, the guy who does CBM wasnt banned. Nor other wildly popular mods such as SingleNation, or Banners,
But no I dont much use Shrapnel forums either for general hanging out. Altho I do like them better than the invision one
I asked Elana for the start locations. Once I have those I can figure out what went wrong.
For assigning starts, I could not find a way to set provinces as "start" so I had to set all of them as "nostart" except the ones I wanted to be starts. I may have overlooked one or made some other mistake. I did not catch it when I did a test run.
That doesnt work as well. The game has terrain preferences for many nations. Sometimes it assigns the only opwn swamp then needs another. Reding the game.log if one was created using -dd would explain what happened. Dom3 really does try to space them apart. Closing off most of the provinces then leaving some open just tends to mess it up. Specially assigning a start works better but its not done in the map editor (like marking nostart can be) its done by editing the .map file.
#specstart 1 123
would assign Early Ermor to start specifically in the province 123

Could possibly be some sort of backlash from the server downtime, though I'm just guessing.
Never mind, the other responses make more sense.
Joe, god of Abysia, is willing to do battle anywhere, anytime, on any map. If we restart 1,000 times, he will sit in our capital researching the basics of evocation each time without even the slightest sense of deja vu.
Funny, that pretty much describes my post-secondary education.
So what are we going to do? If their are terrain preferences we don't readily know there is a possibility that this will happen again.
We can try a new map, this one I actually got used to,but if the group wants to have a do-over better now than later.
On a different note we seem to know 2 pretenders that are starting out cozy....
What about a crafted map? Dawn of Dominions could be fun, and the start locations are tailor-made to their respective races. Otherwise, there are other hand-crafted maps which use balanced starts.
Joe, very funny.. thanks.
About discussions, diplomacy. After I died in the elementalist game, and before the announcement of this new game, i discussed diplomacy with several people. They told me the only 'rule' about diplomacy was that you did not come into the game with a pre set alliance. I agree. I discussed gem trades with several players in our game. The nation starts give some indication of gems available out of the gate. I thought it was OK. After discussing gem trades with Ghostwes, I suggested we consider other areas of possible cooperation... and the location came up. Perhaps I am too trusting?
I apologize if I trespassed some diplomacy rule that is commonly understood in the Dom3 MP community but not stated in the manual.
I am OK with whatever house rules the players wish to adopt. If the desire of the players is to only allow communication outside the game between players who have met in the game. - I am OK with that. Please note that the in game message mechanism is just the same as email... so I really don't see a difference, but I will abide by this, and any other house rules that exist. Please just help me, (and other newbs) to actually know what these house rules are.
I still prefer a neutral person to view our start up map... and see if it does distribute the startup locations fairly well apart. No startup is likely to be totally fair, nor even. However, if most players want to continue on the current map - I will remain amenable to this, as well
- Respectfully requested.
Edit: re: following question re: curre3nt map. I have no problem with the current map - just a concern about the start up positions. Whatever the majority wants is fine by me.
I was just poking a little fun at you,not trying to make any point on table talk.
Dawn of dominions is an interesting map, what is everyones feeling about the map?
