So I saw that this game is getting its engine completely remade and its gameplay improved. Its been in development for 4 years and it hasn't been hyped much. Just getting the word out that this is a title to watch, an excellent space game!
huh. I have this, and it is a great game. iva seen a few thread on these forums as well.
I will have to relook into this.
Don't you mean X: Rebirth? This is what they've been working on. X3: Reunion came out in 2005.
The X series is a brilliant series of space games, though very tricky to really get into. X Rebirth looks amazing so far, and it looks like it will be more accessible to new players, which is good. Still no multiplayer, and while I can understand the difficulty of implementing full on co op gameplay, a simple deathmatch/team deathmatch would be fairly easy. Still excited.
yeah - x: rebirth makes me less confused.
Will come out 3rd quarter this year, about the same time as Rebellion and Sword of the Stars II....
Heard of these X games but never played them. Too many good games to care about games with tough userinterfaces.
^^
hehe.
nub.
I could never get into these games. It's too open and there's too much stuff to do other then flying around dogfighting, which is all I really want out of a game like this.
Someone remake TIE Fighter and I'll give you money right now.
That will never happen. The guys over at LucasArts are allergic to money. That's the only explanation I can think of for why they haven't already done it.
Combat should hopefully be improved, as well as ship fitting (actually taking up slots in weapons interface instead of sitting in a cargo hold).
As for the hopes of some players, cockpits may return, based on one blurry screenshot from a demo video posted. (X3: Reunion and Terran Conflict did not have cockpit displays, the camera was positioned right outside the ship, though there are mods available.) I'm not too crazy about cockpits. They may be more realistic, but with Reunion and Terran Conflict it was much easier to see around the sector and fight other ships.
Actually, they do have cockpits, it depends on what race's fighter craft you are using, in this pic is from an Argon Buster, I use this type of ship as camera because it does not have a nose to get in the way of effect shots I set up in my lore post...
this has a nose and will stick out in effect shots...
lol well yeah I slipped up, brain said rebirth and I typed reunion....
I have stronger associations with reunion.... association failure!
sorry for the mix up
It gets a lot of grief, but the UI is not actually complicated. If you can handle freelancer, moving up to X3 is just a few extra hotkeys.
I have played X2 and X3, both games are phenomenally intoxicating games,,,, but they do not have much replayability, for me it was about 3 games each and then I'm done with it (one game occupying you for months tho). Even trying to come back after a long time away dousnt work... i tried that just last week, got overwhelmed by a massive 'been there done that' cloud.
I know exactly how you feel mystikmind. I tried getting back into X3 and I was SO upset at the poor player to game interfacing options. The capability for awesome was all there, but usually it required a ton of mods to add to the game before it ever truly felt fully "fleshed out".
I couldn't play the game without the 500k comms mod as well...having to fly close to every station just bored the hell out of me.
Same with using jumpgates. If I have to fly through another jumpgate in a space i'm going to shoot something!
Rebirth is getting rid of jump gates and redoing the game engine from scratch.
I would expect a greatly increased player to game interface with far more intuitive controls. As long as they don't sell out to the "mass market" and remake the game as a dumbed down space fighter game.
They have promised to greatly streamline the trading system as well.
Honestly if they added technology research and capability with capital ship abilities and some cool construction and planet options...(copy sins i mean ) we may just have the perfect idea for a game. Sins with first person fighter control.
I havn't gotten round to playing sins of a solar empire just yet. But overall, my love of the X games was greatly assisted by having played Freespace/freespace2. And still there are plenty if good ideas in Freespace that could have made X games even better!
Shame, that's exactly what I want. Part of the reason this became a niche genre is that developers bloated it up with so much other stuff and had you spend inordinate amounts of time doing ridiculously mundane things like flying right up to a space station so you can communicate with it. (The Evochran games have the same problem, I tried a demo and spent almost the entire time flying around looking for something to do.)
There aren't really any good space combat action games out there anymore, just the niche games that have combat buried underneath a giant pile of other stuff.
Ah I don't think I was clear enough on what I meant by dumbed down. I meant oversimplified, like having fewer options customizing fighters, fewer tactics, and simpler flight controls, with more mundane ships. You know, add a little bit of wow's "mediocrity of experience with shiny exterior".
Fixing the static nature of the game (lots of wasted time, little to no AI initiated action) is necessary... Honestly the best mod I ever had for X3 TC was cykur's gateless hyperspace jump mod...when it worked.
I used the crap out of that mod and loved every second of it, it opened up the whole universe and my brain said goodbye to the annoying jump gates.
I'll read up on Rebirth. Thanks for the heads up. Think I have TC on Steam. Two problems with TC.
1. It just ran way too hot, my graphics card I mean.
2. Even after reading the forums it left me bewildered whenever I tried to do anything, and back to the forums some more.
I recommend starting out with an older X title if you want to learn the ropes. I started out with X2, back before they added production chains and a lot of other stuff, so it was easier to learn. Then again, Rebirth will probably reboot the gameplay as well.
Ya those jump gates were the worst. Most damage to my relationships was caused by taking a huge ship through a gate and crashing into another races ship.
What is the difference between X3 - Reunion and X3 - Terran conflict? Terran conflict sequel/better/successor? Or just an expansion? If expansion, can those two be played together somehow? Thanx
It took a long time and a lot of learning to earn a capital ship in Reunion but they dumbed down the game and made getting ship a lot easier for Terran Conflict.
I wouldn't say that they dumbed down the game, but I agree that it is it much easier to get stuff in that game. Mission rewards are a lot higher now. Hell, by the time you complete the main storyline (very lame and leaves a lot of unanswered questions), you have a small fleet of ships. I played Reunion for months and managed to have one or two stations and a small collection of ships. I got to that same position in TC in a few weeks. Haven't restarted since I lost my savegame. Hopefully Rebirth will be what I hope it is. Egosoft really needs to ramp up the testing, because they always let serious bugs loose, which drags down their review scores.
