Like the title says, I'd like to open this thread as a place where all former, current and future GC2 players can check in and talk about whatever interests them.
Not to slight those still currently involved with the game but these forums are really just a shadow of what they used to be. To me they were my first introduction into what an online community actually could be. Back in the day a thread was lucky to stay on front page of the most recent 50 posts for more than 15 minutes. Nowadays a post can sit unanswered for many days and still be in the top 50 most recent posts. And that's *with* the inclusion of all the cross-posted forums from other Stardock sites. Imagine how slow things would be without all the Off-topic, Personal Computing and Impulse threads passing through.
But while I do want to catch up with all the fallen GC2 warriors of times gone by, I also realize that time waits for no man and what's gone is gone.
Still I believe that many of the old timers still occasionally lurk these forums looking for something long lost so hopefully this thread will give them a place to stop in and just say hi or to talk about whatever else they feel like.
And for those still playing the game, or those just starting to play the game, or even those that haven't yet started playing the game you can just think of yourselves as future former players and use this thread to put in your own 2 cents as well.
Hi Mumble!
Been gone a long time and came back to the game a few months ago for a return. I do remember when the forums here were alive with posts and half of them were metaverse empire threads lol.
Hope you are keeping well yourself.
What a great idea for a thread Mumble! Drengin, good to see you checking in.
I don't play competitively anymore, and in fact haven't played any game, mod or meta in some time, though i am looking forward to just playing some fun games!Well gone are the days of the Diplomats/Browncoats/Overmind/Quorth and HCH talking up a storm on here, this community was (is?) one of the better online forums i've ever been apart of, and ive stuck round in some sense (other SD forums) ever since.I'd like to hear from some names that have been quite for some time. Hope all is well and we might all get together again if Brad decides to do a GC3.....
I too was introduced to the joys of forums from here. I now lurk in the Sins of a Solar Empire as a modder for Distant Stars. I still occasion this place just to see if things have changed as Brad said he might fix a few of the issues that were introduced by the Twilight expansion.
I've been active or lurking over at the Elemental boards since the day they launched. So far, the 'community' there has never come close to what was happening around here when I finally started posting, which was not too long before the DA beta. I'm stumped as to whether that situation is because the Elemental code is still so rapidly changing or whether the social climate on the inter-tubes in general or Stardockia in particular have changed.Re the GC2 forums, I've noticed LTJim as a regular 'old newbie' who often takes the time to try to answer basic game questions from really new players. I'd try to do more of that volunteer support stuff myself, but I've been playing so little that I'd need to do some actual work to reply with confidence. If the Elemental sequel/alternative disappoints me as much as the War of Magic title has, I could easily end up playing GC2 regularly until Stardock puts all that engine work to use to build GC3.
Mumble, re the Impulse forum topic, it looks like the sale to GameStop has gone through and the topic is no longer listed at GC2 or Elemental. With searches, I can find some old Impulse topics at the domains, but they display as Home and not Impulse. I still hope to see a Stardock alternative for folks who just want an installer/updater (Reboot Stardock Central? Please!). But I don't miss the clutter on the boards that the Steam-competitor project created.
It's nice to see a few lost souls check in. It won't take much to keep this thread going given the limited traffic. Just an occasional post by a few people would be enough.
Good to hear from all of you.
GW, yeah I know that Impulse was sold off and the forum no longer exists here but I'm just going on my old impression of how the forums have devolved. Call it literary license.
I did eventually install Impulse and update my games to the latest versions as far as I know (DL v1.53, DA v2.01, TA v2.03) and I've actually started so many DA games that I've lost count.
My problem at this point is one of extreme perfectionism, I start a game, spend a few weeks to a month on it and then I get to a point where I realize that I could have done something better or earlier and I'm damned to start over. It's been a few months since I last even tried to play the game.
I do figure at this point I have one year left until I retire and then I'll finally have the time to play the game I want to play.
I actually find that the games I enjoy the most are where I have to fight a larger empire, which tends to happen when I start in a corner and don't expand far or fast enough. Letting another empire swallow up half the star systems is not exactly playing on my best form. However, it does make for a more interesting game, right up until the moment I start winning. There aren't very many surprises in store after that.
Plus the rate I go through mod versions, doesn't give me much chance to actually finish a game.
I haven't played GC II in over a year - kind of surprising since I don't think I'd ever gone more than a month without playing GC since the OS/2 days. I was just thinking about starting a new game, dropped in here and found this post. Nice idea, Mumblefratz!
Like GW Swicord, I was active on the Elemental forums during the beta, but was ultimately disappointed with the game and haven't played it since it shipped. Since then I've been spending most of my gaming time on Dragon Age: Origins and the somewhat disappointing Dragon Age II.
An aside to MarvinKosh: Of all the GC games I've played, over all the different incarnations of the game, the one I remember most fondly was a GC for OS/2 game where I started out in a corner, had to attack the Drengins in the diagonal quadrant to expand beyond my first two systems, and then found that I then had to fight my way across the galaxy since all habitable systems had been colonized by then.
I know that there are many others out there that pass by now and again so I'll take the liberty of bumping this up every so often to make sure every one sees it.
Just thinking out loud...its been over 5 years now since most of us played GC2 for the first time....Other than C&C Generals and Rise of Nations, i don't know of any other game i play that has kept me around for so long.I'm not sure if that's a testament to the game or to the community. I suspect a little of both!
Cripes, so many memories... GC2 was my first ever Stardock game, and although I don't touch the actual GC2 threads any more it's still my favorite site from which to access the off-topic section.
I really should get back to the modding forums some day.
I was never that active on the forums. I still haunt the forums occasionally, reading threads, posts and whatnot. It is odd, because I have been thinking about starting to play GalCiv 2 again.
Scoutdog, my first Stardock game was Galactic Civilizations I.
GW Swicord -
An "old newbie" - I like that!
I started a project, left my on-going suicidal games on hold, and vowed not to start another until I finished. Also, I swore not to start any other pc game or even load one until the project was done. It's just too easy for me to lose hours and hours ....
I do check in here every week, though. Many of y'all helped me when I started the game, and I enjoy passing on that knowledge, along with the few tidbits I discovered myself along the way.
Yup same here LOL
Nice to see some familiar names still kicking around.
I would play more and submit more games if I had the time... sadly this is not the case.
I think the last game I completed was back in October of 2010 and immediately started up another but got derailed at some point and haven't been back since.
I occasionally check the forums and the AltMeta for signs of life.
So good of you Mumble to open this thread.
Cheers to you and all GalCiv2 alumni.
I just love this game and I hope it get more popular each day!
The story-fiction is great and intresting. My first SD game was also GC1.
I know I am not of the past but I am the currently holding onto Fifth Place. I am deep into making my ships and playing a little.
@ MarvinKosh, I enjoy it too, being the Underdog like in this game on this map, I have 25 planets in blue and the rest of the 533 planets are grey.
We are looking for players to join to become aggressive Admirals to lead your fleets across the Galaxy!
Empress Saint Mina of Ophelia VII of Order of the Bloody Rose of Orders Militant of Adepta Sororitas
I like the background of the space. It has a different look, is it a mod?
Can't say for sure which one it is, but there are some mods which alter the nebula backdrops. High Resolution Graphics Mod being one which does.
No mods because I only play Metaverse Games but I have put somethings in GFX folder to change the suns to have solar flares, and sensors are purple. I also adjusted the Nebula density. Yes, I think it was High Resolution Graphics Mod but it has Metverse option in it.
@MarvinKosh, your ship, is it (Red Baron) Chig von something another (Ace of Aces) from Space and Beyond: "Angry Angel". On the side it say "Abandoned all hope" and it has painted on it is human skull and bones.
I just watched last night.
I wouldn't know, I threw it together to try and make the most of one of the Terran light fighter chassis.
Ok, it looks nice anyway!
I too have been away for awhile, been over at the Sins forums. But had decided to take a break from Sins and play and mod GC2 again.
Thought id kick this thread and see if any old heads appear?
I've seen Mumble and Motti post recently. I think even the beloved, senescent emperor of the Gerontocracy posted in an MV thread not too long ago.
Me Mumble and Motti have all been active in the Tyranny Empire thread of late, Motti and i have even submitted games recently. Good to know there are old timers about still, you most deservedly included GW!
