Anyone else ready for a true 4th race?!
And I don't think the "factions" are going to cut it-- just minor variations of the same three we've played over and over again at this point.
I know it's a RTS, so balance is important, but it's also a 4X, and that's one HUGE way it's lacking in epicness compared to games like GalCiv (a true 4Xer).
Personally, I was extremely excited to see a new expansion was to be released, but when I saw it was just more of the same, I became disappointed.
Hell, I want a Titan as much as the next guy, but I've lost major interest in the same three races I've played the past few years now.
Modability..they are improving the game enough to add variations in races--hence, you can mod the races into whatever you want.
Currently it's possible to have six races. With the improvements, modifying and using races gets expanded.
If you want new races there are plenty of mods that do that, both of well know sci-fi series and a handful that are their own very creative creation. I honestly think that it was the best way to go, especially as an entirely new race would push the game to its limits much faster than sub-factions where some assets can be shared.
If its anything like Command & Conquer: Generals - Zero Hour, it should add a lot of strategic depth even with only a handful of unit and tech changes, and from what little we know Ironclad is being a bit more ambitious than EA was.
More than just adding races or factions, I'd like to see customizable race traits you can pick pre-game. That is what I feel is lacking from a true 4X and would add great diversity to the existing content.
And none of it is going to happen for Rebellion.
Making the modding of all parts of the game more upfront gui-like would be a nice option.
Part of Sins though is its a strategy game and that requires some balance. It's a lot more interesting fighting a dissimilar opponent but the problem with "everything is changeable" sometimes means everyone picks the same strengths or balance is lost or you just end up fighting a mirror image.
In a persistent universe, I'd love full customization.
...and yep--we are talking to different games here.
I'm all for adding a 4th race, but it would be very difficult to balance it with the other three races. That's the problem; it would just make the issue of balance much more complex. In contrast I think the differences between the factions and races will be smaller and thus easier to balance. One thing they could easily do would be to add some more planet types ala the Sins Plus mod.
Sins as of Entrenchment is a pretty epic game as it is, but you have to play human opponents in online multiplayer to be able to see that. (If you only play AI then your opponents are essentially retarded and the game could become pretty boring after a while.)
A really big part of the game that is UNDERUTILIZED is making custom maps that contain the balance and elements you need for a particular match or scenario. The map can be as much the game as the game itself--if time is taken to lay it out.
What no Fifth Race? I really hope someone gets this, and good luck on getting the devs on board with this.
SG1?
Correct.
In relation to this 4th race suggestion, my question is, are the changes they are hinting at here going to be superficial or will these 3 rebellious alternates play like a whole new race? I personally have no qualms with keeping it this way. Adding new playable races are what mods are for. I would, however, like to see the Titan class ships be 6 unique creations both graphically and functionally. I can see the rebellious factions keeping the same basic ship design as the main branch, but with some changes to stats and visuals.
I am almost wondering if the choice to be loyalist or rebel is part of the tech tree itself though... Choose the loyalist path and you can upgrade your frigates to loyalist frigates with some visual change and stat upgrade? Eh, thinking about it, probably not. Might be interesting, but probably too data intensive? (or just impractical)
A forth Race would be nice. Like the race the vasari are running from. They should have caught up by now shouldn't they????
Well, I'm thinking that what the group there running from is rebels from there Empire. I mean that ship that came back if 2/3 or 3/5 of the Shadow fleet joined the rebellion then the one ship that came back would be heavely damaged and it would frighten almost anyone out of there minds.
the rebels are new races with new ships, technology and look. Its gonna be fun cos thats double the amount of races to choose from. It will present more variety in a 5v5 multi-player game.
They stated that tech and ships would change when you branched off from the main faction in research. You decide which way to go.
someone else is getting star-gates..
StatusIpod, you're looking threatening with that bazooka
I would love the extra race to be the race chasing the vasari. Sorta like the borg arriving in system.
If its not a new race I hope they double ship classes for each race and have more planet action. Something new you know.
Perhaps some character interaction ala starcraft.
Based on their apparent power, I don't think that would be a feasible option while maintaining the game's canon in any form. They'd be way too overpowered. I disagree strongly.
would have been great for a campaign mode
There is barely any cannon. Thats the problem.
I want starcraft like animations and cutscenes in a single player starcraft2 like experience. Playing through the starcraft2 campaign atm and its pants. Good fun... lots of character. Loving the hangar stuff and the merc hiring etc.
Let me repost what I posted elsewhere on a campaign mode:
I think any sort of "campaign mode" would get repetitive very quickly. For each race, against any sort of AI, the same basic strategy will probably be used. Campaign mode should be significantly different from what could have been a series of random-small or random-medium maps. To make it halfway worthwhile, I think they'd have to make up new victory conditions so it isn't just "expand, then kill every enemy planet". For instance, campaign-based victory conditions could be something like: retain control of planet X for 40 minutes, prevent the destruction of starbase X, achieve an income of X credits per second, etc. But even still, for any player who has any MP experience (most of the regulars on this forum), any of this would probably be trivially easy... and if it were made even a little challenging to people like us, it would probably be virtually impossible for the masses who play only single-player. At their current skill level, at least.
However, a "harder" campaign mode combined with good strategic coaching from instructors or heroes in-game might help average players up the learning curve enough such that they wouldn't be completely trounced in MP the first couple times they play, which could prevent some of them from permanently going back to single-player in despair. In other words, a well-designed (hard but learnable) campaign could help entice more people to play online, which would be excellent IMO - but I don't know how much the devs care.
Of course there will always be those who'll always prefer single-player so they can watch the AI suicide thousands of ships into their starbases.
The reason people don't play Sins MP is because it's horribly slow for an RTS, not because they get trounced back to single player. If I lose in MP Starcraft 2, does that mean I'm going back to SP? Don't be silly.
if a campaign(s) is included (which probably won't happen so the point is moot) it should be for its own sake, not to bring more players into mp. people who play online extensively likely won't bother with any sort of single-player mode so it doesn't need to cater to them.
