To reiterate the epic subject:
multi-core support, 64bit and the 2GB RAM limit.Because thats the only thing that matters now.
I really want to know if this is gunna happen, If you guys are working on this or if we have to wait for a SINS2.
With my Core i7 875K OC@4Ghz (X30 ratio running high prior+2 core affinity the game properly run on the first Core it is used @ 100% when playing), 8Gb RAM DDR3 1600 and two 460GTX SLi. A racing beast for any games.
But the game is horribly slow on a 3vs3 skirmish versus computers only (Cruel difficulty). Almost no differences with my old Core2Duo E6850, or a very little. Its smooth, getting slower and slower and i have to exit the game upset like a miserable. So the game is perfect as long as there are no more than 4 players (AI). Altho i can even get it to lag like hell with 4 players if fleets are at max capacity.
A little fleet with 16 capitals trying to save a Starbase (and yes there are other fights happening at same time on the map):

Halfway on the same 3vs3 game (AI Cruel), the lag begins:

Sorry i know this game is now old, i guess.. but if my processor could run this on 8 cores instead of 1. It would be smooth like baby butter and id enjoy it sooo much, for now its not.
But i got to admit you guys rock for making such wonders, Sins of Solar Empire is the best strategy game to me, It brought me back to Strategy games when i was deep into First Person Shooter only.
Any hope or do i give up ?
sorry. but the devs have made it clear that it wont happen. time to wait for sins2. the new patch should help though.
Thanks for being precise and clear.
Hope for something that wont happen is worse than giving up.
As a new patch, i must see options like disabling fighters/mines models or something that could relax the processor a little or more like 'a lot!', so we can do these big fights without too much lag... I'll live with that.
After all, i still hope for a reason to play this game again
Have you tried the Sins optimization mod? For a community response it is quite a thorough answer to the problem, since RAM is the main issue with Sins not processing.
Processor quickly becomes the bottleneck once memory is good.
True, but memory is still the biggest factor currently.
Given what's been accomplished in the Optimization mod, I'm suspecting it won't be a problem after the patch.
That's the point; memory is the current bottleneck, so it makes by far the most sense to patch.
Ok guys cheers
i just tried out the Optimization mod, Installed it, enabled it.. and then loaded one of the fat savegame i got where the lag used to be huge.
Eh, if there is improvement, i can't say its amazing... No differences, still laggy as hell. And that one is so much laaggy if i use FRAPS to record it, its pretty much gunna be a diapositive, pointless that i show you this crap.
Thanks anyway but i'll wait next patch
Maybe you need to lower effects settings? I can't say I've ever had that much lag, and my system would be considered old by your standard. Granted it wont be as beautifull, but I hardly see a difference any more.
thats with every effects disabled and every details at medium and ship bump low detail.
Lower would be... unacceptable i guess.
Anyway, max or lowest details doesnt affect the game it's the processor being sightly saturated by the number of units involved on the map.
About the RAM Sins of solar......*32.exe is using 486Mo only and processor 100% on the first core with all others idling. The second core is sometimes reacting for the textures load and stuff as we know. Thats when the game is laggging hard on 1024x768 windowed mode.
But there is something positive in all of this. I did test a skirmish Supreme Commander 2 with 4vs4 HARD AI, At a certain time when there are around 5 million units and one explosion per second heh, What a big surprise seeing overall processor usage @ 30% only but the RAM went up to 2 Go just for the SC2 executable. The game was smooth of course, but first time i see Total RAM usage under Windows going up to 5Gb.
So you guys are right, maybe it's more about RAM then processor usage, but your Optimization mod didnt change anything, SINS is using 480Mo RAM with or without it and there is no noticable changes.
Play with small fleet sizes. Larger fleets add almost nothing to the game in terms of gameplay fun. Its just more of the same eyecandy, and more processing speed required.
What fleet size to use can really depend on the map size and number of players. It might make sense to have large fleet sizes for a 4 player game on a small map and small fleet sizes for a 10 player game on a huge multi-star map.
In case anyone's wondering, the default setting for online multiplayer 5v5 is Normal fleet sizes on the huge random single star map. For the most part it runs fine unless a game gets to about 2 hours and multiple fleets of over 1000 fleet supply are running around.
I just played my first largish game that didn't get laggy at anypoint. Huge Random map 100ish planets no lag whole time and all it took was a i5 2500k at 5.2 GHz and ram at 2133.
it is 3 vs 3 (AI CRUEL) with SMALL FLEET size already.

From Large to Small, there almost no differences anyway (with the lag)
Sure, the number of planets being so huge, u can never have epic battles which relax your processor compared to my map that has 50 planets here : (with only 6 being reachable and on constant attack)
So lets say the number of planets, MORE U HAVE, LESS U LAG. About this map i like playing, where u own 8 planets each. 6 players = 48 planets.
There is just one planet you can reach and it protects the 7 planets behind it that are unreachable for anything if u setup a good defense. On these planets the battles are epic and the AI is really charging em.. just like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_64c77uoS8 which isnt really epic, ive seen worse...ive tried a 16 capitals fleet to decrease the usual numbers of ships.. like those fleets with 250 illuminators i usually do. But sadly its still laggy.
On normal maps.. you can never reach a serious ammount of ships for epic battles, just because the fleets are scattered.. Rare are the massive battles and for me on these maps with 2000 planets where nothing serious happens, i don't lag also. But this isnt how i play.
you have just confirmed my claims of over a year ago that sins is RAM speed bound, with SINGLE cpu ghz bound as the SECOND bottleneck
thank you
harpo
Your welcome.I don't know if it's relevant but I have been playing around with it and I think that 8-8-8 24 1866 is works better then 9-10-9 27 2133 for sins. Unfortunately that's as far as my RAM will go though. 8(
What are you talking about?
My RAM is 1600Mhz 7-8-7-24 on a P55 so, Dual-channel. I'm on Top list of EVEREST Benchmark 14Go/s reading speed. 10.6Go/s writing speed
and 48ns latency.
if there is something working great in my system, its the RAM i am really proud of. Excellent stats.
Then how do u explain i see almost no difference on my old system, a Core2Duo E6850 with crappy common DDR2 800mhz and this one. Both processors are running on 1 core @ 100% of course, and they both lag at the same time... When AIs own huge fleets.
Think i am changing my mind again about the ram/multicore debat. Its definately a processor issue.
There is the, either, page file or read-seek problem as well with the limited memory usage. I never really paid much attention to the amount of back and forth between the HDD's and the memory when the game got laggy. I'm in the processor camp myself, as far as most limiting bottleneck for Sins, though. We need to find some dope that's not scared to dump 1.6v into a i52500k and play a Sins game at 5.7 GHz with ram at 1066 and a 2tb WD green to prove it.
I have a i7 930 at 4ghz with 2ghz ddr3 and a wd 1tb black as one on my gaming machines, and I have overclocked four of my comps without any problems, and the i7 box is the best( by a small margin) sins playing machine, the second best is my core 2 quad q9550 at 4ghz with 8gb ddr2 1066 ram and a little seagate 160gb(almost as fast as the wd black), and on a slightly more comparable note my amd x2 6000+ w 4gb ddr2 800 geforce 8800gt is a bit less laggy than my amd x2 5200+ also with ddr2 800 and a gforce 7600gs, and both the amd's are NOT overclocked.
