Yeah, yeah, this is a Stardock forum and we all hate Steam, blah blah...
Anyway, lots of specials like last year for those who have been on the fence about various titles. Most titles on the site are 10-90% off.
Some notable stuff today:
Super Meat Boy $3.75 (why isn't this game on Impulse at all?!)
Various Indie Game packs for $5 each (5 games per pack)
CivIV Complete $6.25(!)
Evil Genius $1.50
Serious Sam HD 1&2 $7.50
Valve Complete Pack $25
And this is day 1. I'd love to support Impulse here, but the total Christmas sale they've had this month so far has sucked compared to one day of Steam offers.
Been looking for some good stuff, but I goofed when you have to enter your age to view M games (why do have to enter your age every single fucking time you want to view an M game), accidentally entering my birth year as 2010. Apparently Steam won't remember me entering my age countless times, but it will remember one mistake, and now I'm barred from viewing games in the Steam Store that I should rightfully be allowed to. This is fucking gay... Now I can't get the games I want!
Did you try clearing cookies?
Go to Impulse and buy from there.
Bought CIV IV Complete based on the recommendations from this board. Hope I don't regret it.
How do I do that, my good man?
EDIT: Fixed. Either I clearing the cookies using CCleaner worked, or simply restarting Steam did. Still annoyed at the nanny state style control that Steam has. Kids are smart enough to fake their ages, you know.
I actually hated civ 5 at first... until I found myself playing marathon games and remembering why its a just 1 more turn game. I'd actually recommend 5 over 4 now after some time to think about it.
Today's sales were crap... just rehashing some of the sales from previous days. nice for the folks that missed things. Annoying for those of us that did not. Hoping tomorrow brings something new.
I have more hope for Elemental's future than Civ 5's. Like a fanboy I preordered Civ 5 and was not able to return it to get my money back. I'm stuck with both so I am now imagining it like a race to cope with my percieved $100 or so loss, which game will be my strategy replacement for Civ 4 first.
Civ 5 team fired non-disclosure retired the civRevolutions guy they had lead the project after releasing this latest patch which was pretty big. Elemental team hired one of my favorite modders from Civ4 and also released a big patch. Right now I'd like to say its neck and neck but the balance is gonna shift to Elemental I'm betting. Firaxis seems to share a mutual hate with their forum fans atm, while Stardock is more like a comforting crack dealer giving us beta-tastes of the future and hooking us further.
I'm thinking that Elemental has potential to turn out to be the "better" game way down the road, but I would say the hate for forum members was found here rather earlier on, pre-launch and right after it. It's much better now though, but the rose colored glasses I had for Stardock was certainly not returning. Firaxis... never really seen them as being keen on feedback in general.
Dosn't it suck when not many people enjoy what you enjoy so you constantly get ignored when it comes to game design. Disapointment is so familiar to me. Civ5, Elemental, the general lack of good deep coop games.
Also Steam Sale is awesome. That is all.
If Stardock makes Elemental %50 on Impulse so I can buy it. I really want to buy Elemental but $49 is so much right now for me.
I think I have higher hopes for Civ 5 just because I feel the scope of the change required to make it a great game is much less. It's really just AI fixes and balance tweaks while elemental still hasn't even decided what type of game it wants to be, let alone how it will all come together in the long run. Elemental probably does have more potential for greatness though, it just also far more potential and liklihood for epic failure. Ultimately though it would not shock me if neither game ever reached their potential though.
Elemental is still being sold at full price at retail stores so I'm guessing it's not elligable for bargain status yet. Once it is, I suspect to see the price go down everywhere.
Elemental, Limited Edition w/ box, is currently on sale on Impulse for 49.99. The regular game is still at 49.99.
However, if you do purchase Elemental before 1 Jan 2011, you will get one free expansion. Expansions usually go for 20 dollars.
I doubt Stardock will sell the game at 50% off any time soon especially because that game is still selling well (it is listed as a top seller, along with other titles).
It is a great game. With v.1.1 patch, the game is 1000x's better. Also, getting a free expansion just means you'll get more game for the money.
You've got only 4 days left to earn a free expansion.
Today's deals on Steam:
Serious Sam HD Gold Edition - $3.99 HAWX 2 - $33.49 Cities XL 2011 --$19.99 Neverwinter Nights 2 Platinum - $9.99 Street Fighter IV - $14.99 Victoria series - Save 50 percent off all games in series Lost Planet 2 -$19.99 or $15.99 if you own Lost Planet Killing Floor Complete Pack - $6.99 EVE Online - $4.99 Machinarium - $2.99 Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic - $2.49 Mirror's Edge - $4.99
Serious Sam 2nd Encounter HD for $2 is pretty good. It's a fun game co-op. Mindless shooting, but mindless shooting that knows it's mindless shooting and has fun with it. Really no point in the gold edition, as 1st Encounter is basically just the same thing only not as good. And LOL at SF4 for $15. They should be giving that away at this point; anyone who really wants to play SF already has a console with SSF4, since Capcom refuses to release SSF4 for PC because they're afraid of money or something.
As for Civ5 vs Elemental, I'd say the winner at this point is the one who gets out an expansion first. Both games have probably just about worn out their patch budget allocation at this point, and will want new money to add the major changes people want. Well that's not completely true, Civ5 will 'win' simply because more people bought it on name alone, and reviewers went easy on it despite the base release being inferior to Civ4. Not saying Elemental didn't deserve to get hammered for releasing an early beta for $50, but everyone I know who bought Civ5 at launch disliked it too.
I'd be interested to see sales numbers at this point; Elemental always tops the bestselling list on Impulse, but how many sales is enough to be #1 on Impulse? 100? 1000? I mean Master of Orion III is #6, and I can't imagine more than a handful of poor bastards bought that.
well... the question is what's in the expansion, really. I know elemental has 1 coming out soon, but what are we getting as new content?
I don't think SD will wear its patch budget out as strange as it sounds. They are in it for the long haul here. Improve the core game and get more sales. I think elemental has a HELL of a lot more to gain from putting out a solid expansion to the game in terms of having that reviewed. It will give consumers another look at elemental. I'm not entirely sure they are thinking this way... but if they are, its essentially a way to relaunch the game.
heh - I'd love to see numbers as well... don't think we'll see any soon, but from what I've read, they are generally pleased with the sales and are committed to improving the game in the hopes of future sales. If the game was a flop, then I'd imagine they'd have an exit strategy (eg we will support 4 more patches and then we are done). I'm not seeing that now. Maybe they are playing it that way, but if so, they are playing it pretty close to the chest.
Anyway, enjoying civ5. Finding the ai a little weak, but upping it some each time I play a new game. I'd wager the AI in elemental will dwarf civ5's in 2-3 months.
Back to the sale - not much all that super today for me. Hoping to see something good. I did pick up serious sam for a few bucks, but that's just a goofy game. Fun for what it is anyway.

Machinarium is a surprisingly charming and interesting game with a story I found compelling enough to want to reach the end. I would be negligent not to mention the soundtrack also. It is well worth 3 bucks.
While I suspect that your right that things aren't too bad for them, you can't really read that much into a company saying that "sales are great so there is nothing to worry about, come buy our game". They are going to say that no matter what because if they ever acknowledged that things weren't going well then it can dramatically reduce future sales (would you buy a product that even the maker says is a failure?). It's kind of like in politics, where no matter how hopeless an election is for a candidate they always have to say they are confident they can win. Elemental flopping would be horrible PR for them so they have to keep a rosy face and hope for the best.
We do know that Stardock had to fire one of their development teams because initial sales of elemental were far lower then expected. Supposedly things have picked up since then but it's hard to know by how much. Hopefully by a lot, though it still has a ways to go before I consider buying it.
I'll second Macinarium.
I had it already but it also came with the Humble Bundle I picked up (great deal).
The game pretty much just calms you and makes you happy. The music is great and relaxing. The story is entertaining. There was never a moment where I felt the puzzles were silly or non-sensical.
The one moment I did not enjoy as much was... connect 4(?)... I can't remember the exact game but it just did not feel like it fit with the rest of the game.
Also (and obviously not on Steam) if you haven't picked it up yet grab Demigod. I just got it loaded back up and have had great fun using some of the mods that have been released.Played some single player to get back into the game and some MP last night. Very fun game still.

Are you joking? CIV IV is possibly the best game ever made. Enjoy!!!!!
Tempted by SimCity 4, but it looks like the game has issues with Win 7 64.
Global Agenda has a free trial, by the way
heh.. yeah, I noticed that after I bought it. But still, $7.49 and all the good things I've been hearing about it, probably worth it. Thx for the heads up tho.
