Good day to you all.
First thing to say is im a Solar Empire Virgin (newbie) its in its parcel makeing its way to my front door as i text
So after researching this game thoughly (an annoying habbit when spending any money) i now know that there are three races, all very similar but have thier differances. So since i like to master a certian race in any RTS im trying to decide which one to choose so maybe someone might be able to help me decide.
Personaly i prefer units that have high lethality and high mobility, Or few in number high in quallity (ussally with a sacrifice of duribility)
Thanks for any help
Steve.
Races in Sins Of The Solar Empire are not extremely specialized (like in, for example, starcraft), each of them is is using same types of units (long range frigates, heavy cruisers, carriers etc.) almost the same way, differences between races are far more subtle. Each faction is slightly specialized in something, each of them also has capital ships with unique abilities... there is short description of main advantages/disadvantages:
TEC:
- Strongest Trade in game
- Strong Ore extraction
- Strongest Ships Hulls/Armors (per cost)
- Good use of pure force
- Super strong damage dealers (Marza Missile Barrage, Kol Finest Hour...)
- best colonization upgrades
- strongest planet development
- weakest fighters and bombers
- lack of tactical depth compared to other two races
- lategame may be problematic against Advent and ESPECIALLY Vasari
Advent:
- Best shields in game and units abusing them (Iconus Guardian)
- Best fighters and bombers in game, strong carriers
- Tons of synergy between different units making mixed armies very strong
- Best culture spread
- Best colonizer capital in game (mothership)
- very strong weapon upgrades
- psi manipulation as integral part of many skills/abilities
- you can easily build strong and very versatile army
- best intelligence (based mostly on culture spread)
- hot and cute unit voices
- worst resources extraction
- weakest armors and hulls
- problems with early eco, if you do not use mothership
Vasari:
- Strongest and the most cost effective lategame fleet in game
- best resources extraction in game and easiest way of capturing neutral asteroids
- Only Starbase in game able to move (no phase drive OFC)
- best hull regeneration
- all units are more expensive but slightly stronger then TEC/Advent equivalents
- phase manipulation: phasing out enemy ships, disabling drives, gravity well radius needed to jump manipulation etc
- phase stabilizers allowing you to jump between unconnected grav wells and summoning strong fleets for minimal resources
- longer you play, the more cost effective your ships are (truth for all factions, but Vasari benefit this rule far more)
- strongest superweapon in game (place phase stabilizer allowing you to attack from any planet AND disable EVERYTHING ENEMY HAS in entire gravity well...)
- weakest early game fleet (units are significantly more expensive but only slightly stronger then Vasari/TEC equivalents)
- you are forced to capture neutral resources early game or you have an disadvantage
- worst colonization upgrades (to volcanic planets...)
- low cost-effectiveness of units during early-midgame
- Lack of strong AoE damage dealers (like TEC Missile Barrage or Advent Cleansing Brilliance)
- unit voices are annoying after few hours
I've started as TEC, then switched to Advent and now I play Vasari-only.
Thank you very much for your much needed reply
It will prolly still take me ages to decide but this will help alot
edit sorry shitty internet
To Vasari, you should add that they have one of the best support ships in the game in the Subverter, which can paralyze enemy fleets. Also, it can be argued that they have the best mothership in the Evacuator ("The Egg") since it can solo colonize with its nanite attack ability and is an excellent enemy capital ship and starbase killer. Also, they may be somewhat overpowered early game because of the Skinatra (carrier cap) Scramble Bombers ability. In pro games you'll often see players rush 2-3 Skinatras at their opponents early game. Furthermore, in general Vasari is probably the best race for killing enemy capital ships because of Phase Missiles, which are a huge advantage for them. They are a great counter to the Advent (weak hulls make them vulnerable to upgraded phase missiles) and are probably best counted by TEC (strong hulls, cheap ships). They also can build their starbase with only 2 military labs (allowing you to quickly put up a defense someplace early-game if you need to) and their starbase can be used on offense since it moves; try planting one at a nearby opponent's home planet early in the game. (This is often called "starbasing").
The Advent's synergy between ships should not be understated. It's the only race that can build a "battle ball" where a properly designed fleet can end up being much more powerful when the right assortment of ships and capital ships are bunched together than when they are alone. A skillful Advent player will tend to keep most of his ships alive for a long time (Guardian shield ability + Mothership shield regeneration). A properly constructed and managed Advent battle ball can be very hard to stop. Advent is probably the best counter to TEC. The Advent also have, IMHO, the best light frigate in the game in the Disciple. It's cheap, it only consumes 4 ship slots, and it's great for countering enemy carrier cruisers and heavy cruisers. They also have the toughest scout in terms of fighting ability and you can spam out Advent scouts to counter enemy long range frigates (LRMs, Illuminators, Assailants).
For TEC, note that they have the best anti-starbase ability in the game with the Orgovs. They can also develop the best early-game economy. TEC's strategy is to build a very strong economy and to pummel the enemy with overwhelming amounts of units backed up by Hoshiko repair ships. They also have a very scary starbase in that it can be used as a bomb that can destroy an unlimited number of enemy ships (affectionately known as the "Red Button"). Try placing one right near the phase lane where you anticipate the enemy to attack from and set up a phase jump inhibitor there as well. If the enemy jumps in there without scouting, boom! For this reason, I tend to avoid trying to tank TEC starbases. (Best way to kill them is with Bomber spam or a Vasari starbase.)
With the exception of the Vasari's early-game Skinatra Scamble Bombers rush, the races are actually pretty-well balanced now though it could be argued that the Advent are weaker since the Illuminators were nerfed in a recent patch. Any one of the races can be very powerful and formidable in the right hands. There are pro players out there who specialize in each race. Advent used to be the race of choice but now that the Illuminators have been nerfed and the Skinatra Scramble Bombers ability buffed, it's mostly Vasari/TEC in the online multiplayer pro games.
I thought Illums fell out of favour only because the bug associated with their damage (allowing something like triple damage, can't remember) was fixed?
That's part of what I was referring to when I said they were nerfed.
Thanks again for the replies, im starting to think i will prolly go with the Vasari. The game should arrive today (though i wont get much time on it, bloody tax returns), is thier tutorials i should follow or stay clear of? and is thier a colour scheme which you can change on the ships?
Thanks again
Stee
Recommend the tutorials and yes you have the option of changing the color scheme.
Ok so the delivery is late but ive been looking up on youtube and on here for what im ment to do at the Game start.
First build the Cap builder and build my first Cap.
While this is happening build a few frigates and ships that can colanise.
Scout out a couple of worlds
Next once the cap is built, send it to a world to colonize, with the other ships after it.
While this is happening start the research process (build labs etc)
This sound about right?
