It's been nice coming back from a couple month business trip to see all the patches and work that Stardock has been pushing forward (thanks guys!). After playing a couple hours with the latest build I can't help coming back to a thought I had back pre-launch:
Can we please take prisoners?
Very often we come across a hero (or army commanded by the child of an enemy Sov) and we're more times than not forced to put them to rest. Would it be possible to consider, perhaps for an expansion down the road, the possibility of taking the Hero or special character hostage and demand a ransom (or use as diplomatic leverage??). Perhaps the captured hero has knowledge of enemy war plans, or territory maps, or perhaps helped contribute to tech research and could show you how to build houses... there are lots of interesting possibilities.. . other than the obvious monetary/power gain.
What do you guys think? I'd love to be able to take prisoners similar to "Mount and Blade: Warband" system and perhaps even turn some of Maghar III's troops against him... since they're occasionally invincible.
Thanks again Stardock for putting forward the changes you have. The product is completely different than the original one I saw a few months ago, and I've been enjoying the changes (perhaps not the crashes so much, but I know they're short lived).
I dont' think it fits very nicely into the game, to be honest. But if it did, maybe you could get an option at the end of combat that would allow you to ransom or release heroes in exchange for a diplomatic boost with your enemy. But I don't think it should go any further than that, and even that seems kind of excessive.
I agree with the OP. taking prisoners (similer to King arthur, the roleplaying game) would be a nice touch, espeically to 'force peace' with an enemy. Ie you captured the aforementioned son or daughter of Magnar, and when arranging a peace treaty 'giving him back' would help seal the deal. The option to execute should be provided as well, and maybe trying to convert?
speaking of heroes, fallen champions would be nice please.
Hmm...it might be a nice idea for a future expansion. Possibly a great multiplayer feature since its a nice gesture to return a hero one has worked hard on and can be traded for things like peace treaties. Much higher priorities for Elemental right now I think, magic needs a lot of work before I start remembering the games full title. I keep subconsciously thinking its called Elemental Wars, not War of Magic whenever I google it.
One of the Homm games (4 if i recall, I know it was the one with the completely brain dead AI) had a prison where heroes defeated by another faction would end up. They could get rescued if the city was taken back. If I remember you got tombstones for dead heroes --I can't remember if you could ressurect them as the AI really made the shelf-life short.
I always like the idea, it would be cool if Elemental eventually put something like that in.
Taking prisoners is great and if they don't pay you make them slaves or kill them!
Its a perfect thing for an expansion.
Actually that would be like the old KOEI games, where you could select what to do w/ captured generals. That also brings up the matter of loyalty...
YES to prisoners and i would also add capturing creatures for study
Capture x number of wolves and get a x% bonus when fighting wolves as a bonus.
Romance of the Three Kingdoms! That brings back memories
But I really do like the idea of prisoners, especially since sometimes enemy sov's beat me to the punch on hiring Champions, it'd be nice to be able to at least deny them the resource (if not hire them myself).
Yes, prisoners would be great. To ransom back, or to make an example of. Or to convert. Some champs should be loyal, but some should only be serving the sov because hes the best deal around, and if a better deal shows up they should jump ship.
Thanks for the great replies/discussion. I agree this would be a great piece for an expansion (perhaps the first one Frogboy??? ). Over the weekend I had a good dynasty going with Tarth, but many of the grandkids ended up going over and joining those Tarth folks... it'd be great to be the angry Grandpa and haul those traitors back home
Great idea. I always liked to take prisoners in Medieval Total War. It could be helpful to ransom them for some quick cash, or to execute them just to screw over the AI.
I definitely like this idea, doubly so if we can bargain for the release of heroes.
Prisoners would be an interesting concept.
I'd also like an option to fight unrecruited champions. They just clutter the map when I refuse to pay them for the privilege to serve me!
Damn hobos...
Slave labor is tasty. An abundance of free sacrifices for my dark magics? Delicious!
TheProgress: I never though about having sacrifical driven magic. That would be AMAZING! (and a great RP element).
Creepyfellow: wholeheartidly agree. I believe there is a way to attack them... but I haven't figured it out yet myself. One of these days Janusk's alter ego Valera (or whatever it is) is going to get a stabbing from lots of dagger armed peasants. ..
Another great Idea to add in the eventual Dynasty/Diplomacy patch or expansion.
