The Design a Spell contest was launched today. I'm excited to see your ideas. I know a lot of people will want baselines to create within, after all its hard to design an implementable spell if you don't know exactly what can be done. But I encourage you to forget the technical limitations for the moment and just design spells that you would love to play with. Sure it means that some great ideas might not make it to the final 5 because they aren't practical, but I would rather see those dream spells and spend some time to see if we can make them, then limit everyone's creativity.
Remember we need spells for outside of combat as well as in combat and that we will have global mana by the time these spells are implemented (one mana pool that all that player's casters share). We are looking for a mix of a good strategic function and cool flavor.\
Good luck!

Code 3 error and then a a message below which I posted. Look up
look up! My post #68, gives you full message
I too have been unsuccessful in submitting. I receive the error that I should contact support (Code 3) with the error message File 404, Resource not found. I use IE8 on a windows machine.
Me too. Using both firefox (latest update) and IE8. All on windows XP
As I meantioned in one of the other threads, some of non-fire books badly needs combat spells now, and something that actually scales with shards.
To avoid the borring nature of same spell with different graphics, I suggested making the spells diffent on how they scale.
For instance reintroduce "hurl boulder" to earth, but make it very low damage initially, but make it scale more powerfully than fireball with the number of shards. This makes for weak combat spells for most earth spell-users, but if they get strong enough (enough shards), to probably the most powerfull direct attack spell in the game. A different mechanic than the first fire spell (fire arrow) that doesn't scale at all.
Similarly you could make a water spell that scales with intelligence. So:
Arcane -> poor damage scaled with intelligence
Fire -> good base damage slowly better with more shards
Earth -> bad base damage powerfully scaled with more shards
Water -> low base damage, scaled well with intelligence (and purhaps slowly with shards) + knocking people over
Air -> More throwing people around than hitting them
There are many games or stories that divide magic into different realms. Try checking out the last airbender, or ultima 8
In the last airbender, air is magic of peace, combat magic is useful for avoidance. Fire if the combat magic of brute force. Earth is a very powerfull magic of blocking and massive damage, water is the magic of the sea and of knocking people of their feet.
In Ultima 8, water is not present, fire is classic sorcery, air is healing and utility spells, earth is necromancy and terraforming.
For anyone who was receiving an error, "code 3", can you please try to submit your spells now? We believe the problem is fixed now and apologize for any inconvenience.
Problem Orcibeans. is my spell, which I had created and tried to submit weeks ago was sort of taken by someone else. Had someone contacted me or replied to my request weeks ago I may have had my idea out first. Now sometimes people can come up with the same ideas. Had this problem been happening to everyone. I may have had the opportunity to be the first to submit that idea. Now it will looks like copying. What bothers me is no one responding to my requests weeks ago. Not even , hey hang tight we know about the problem. We will get to you, send your idea here so no one else takes it.
Next time from a PR stand point inform your customers that you are aware of the situation and your working on it , offer an alternative, insetad of ignoring your customers until you have the answer. No one cares any way.
I have managed to submit my spell now thanks. No more Code 3 error.
Yeh my spell has been entered fine now. Cheers
LOL. Why dont they hold a design a patch that works contest.
I submitted it anyway I also noted when it was created on 11/20. Argylas' Death Kiss. Kept the original Word Doc...which is date stamped. It was for my son anyway.
Whatever...
I agree Eric...a Patch Contest would be cool...knowing my luck. I'd get a submission error...
The amount of people that could "design a patch" probably number in the single digits. Unless you mean just write ten sentences of "ideas" down on paper.
KINGTS I feel for you, that's terrible. They really should have responded faster, or provided a simple alternative way to submit your spell.
Here I submitted it today . My son did it 11/18. I did the background story for him 11/20. I noted that in the submission. You never know. No harm in showing it now.
Argylas' Death Kiss
The Dark Wizard Dias was once a brilliant channeler whose kindness was unmatched, but he was seduced by the beautiful fallen seer named Argylas. Despite her ambition and focused lust for power. Argylas focused on the powers of Necromancy and searched for immortality. The Kingdoms of man deemed her to powerful to continue. Argylas was brought up with charges of heresy and in a compromise with the Fallen factions. She was condemned to death despite Dias' strong rejections. Argylas would not go down quietly and summoned a spell never seen before by man, her Death's Kiss, a powerful spell which called a legion of undead warriors to defend her. Armies and wizards of man rose up and a great battle ensued. Unable to maintain the great strain of sustaining the spell. Argylas was eventually defeated and captured. She was then burned to the stake. Her great library and journals destroyed. Dias heartbroken and torn between duty and devotion resigned. Collecting her ashes and stripped of title banished from the Wizard's council. Dias wandered as a hermit until a fateful day he visited the remains of Argylas' former study. Something called to him. He discovered a secret journal Argylas had carefully hidden.
Inside was Argylas personal diary, He learned his wife was not driven by power or evil, but something much more important. Dias learned crushing revelation of Argylas' pregnancy and her true reasons for the search of immortality, for she was dying of an unknown sickness and wanted to extend her lifespan for the life of the unborn child. He now remembered the clues of her trying to tell her lover of her secret, but his strong work ethic and duty bound personality made him oblivious to his wife's mannerisms.
This drove Dias over the edge and inside were instructions to learning the great spells of controlling the dead. Something was missing, a page from Argylas' journal. Another spell which would render it's user immortal. He finally understood why the council was so afraid. An Immortal with the power to control the dead. The Hermit Dias searched long and hard through tombs, crypts, and any place he could find the ingredients and requirements of learning Deaths' Kiss. The Kingdoms of men soon learned of Dias' quest and soon sent champions, thieves, assassins, anyone who could stop him. Dias' power had grown to great stature and with his enemies almost upon him. He soon learned Argylas' Death Kiss. The first person he revived was his fallen wife, but the grieve stricken tragic lover soon learned that she was nothing but an empty vessel, twisted and in pain. Dias soon realized the spell was a double edge sword. Wizards, Champions, and mercenaries closed in. Dias called upon a Death Dragon, fallen armies, and former champions to defend himself. Dias barely escaped and to this day wanders the world searching for the immortal spell. He also stays hidden in a secret invisible camp site. In time Dias became myth and over the centuries others have sought him out in hopes of learning mankind most powerful spell.-TSS
To gain Argylas' Death Kiss. You must be given the task to do so. One of your champions needs to have Lore with mana. He then must search through quest requirements to find 4 pieces of the great spell. Argylas' journal, Argylas' Ashes, Book of the Dead, and find Dias' Liar.
Once at Dias' Lair, he must defeat Dias to learn Argylas' Death Kiss. Ending the two fallen tragic figures. The results, Once learned the caster can summon 4 different types of soldiers depending of the mana cost. Each assessable by either learning them in their spell book or reaching a certain level. The first is a death soldier. These can actually be fallen soldiers of your own unit or another faction, stage two a former fallen champion with the last of their skill level attributes intact, the cost to that champion is more severe if their level was higher including a former leader, three, a bone dragon, a powerful ally and finally four, Argylas herself. A powerful unstoppable wizard with some dark spells you can created. You can also add or take away certain soldier types.
My suggestion is simply that a suggestion. You can take it where ever you like including a possible campaign, or story plot. Argylas and Dias can be playable champions. All up to you. You have plenty of options as to extent and power of controlling the dead and a simple programming solution in codes to extract contents already met done in the game. You also can expand from the spell to include an immortal spell, or other dark spells. It is a game changing spell, but not unbeatable. It has tactical and strategic possibilities.
Hope you enjoyed my submission thank you.
KINGTS
There are some texts that I cannot read in their full length because the pop-up window which displays the spell description http://elementalgame.com/contest is too small, that is, it extends above and below my screen with no way to scroll. I am sure that mine will be amongst these.
Yeh... I only had 700 words left and it has cut my spell description off at the top and bottom... hopefully stardock can still see the whole thing on their end.
Don't worry xStarfirex. If you do control+a to select all, then paste into word you can still see all of your spell, therefore it is all there, just the top part being cut off at the top of the screen. As it moves down the list more will be visible, I know because mine has done that.
Thank you for the info good sir.
KINGTS, maybe Stardock in this case could give an additional prize (or one less $25 voucher) if the similar idea wins a prize? It would be an excellent goodwill gesture by Stardock, and I think would effectively make up for the mix-up (and I think most people would give kudos for doing the right thing even though expenses would be increased a little).
What do devs (including Kael) and players think? Is it feasible?
Best regards,Steven.
When does the DESIGN A QUEST contest start?
I submitted my spell "Discern Courtier" on November 11th, and I've seen at least 2 similar/identical spells with later submission dates. Does this go by submission date or what? How does that work?
As I said mine was submitted on the 18th, but do to their Code problemss and lack of responce I could only get in by the 30th. It showed up 12/1.
I have the original doc showing the 18th. MIne was first and Ic an prove that, but it may mean nothing. Mine may not even be considered or win anything. I will not presume anything. That is a strong possibility. I would think despite their similarity. They may just indeed reward 5 people for all have around the same idea or avoid all of them completely. They may go by submission date only. Even if three people for example have a similar idea. They may go by the one who presents it better.
I have no clue. As I said i was uncomfortable even sending it. I did it for my son. We will see. Best of luck to all of you.
Yes, I can read the whole thing through the admin interface.
If someone sends Fireball 1 and later someone else sends Fireball , if I were to pick I'd pick the best. The fact that they are about same means nothing. I'd reward just one despite similarities and don't care about submittion date (which is unimportant as this isn't some kind of race and the possibility of copycats is an assumed risk anyways. Or should be in worst case scenario).
*which are different not just in name, obviously.
You make a good point. And Stardock, could you make a "no smileys" option for posts, or certain text? Currently there is a) c) and 1 3 which you can't turn off.
Although if there is one that is exactly the same as another, you'd probably have to award it to the earliest, as the only way two entries could be exactly the same is if the subsequent one is a copy. What about variations on a theme (or one edited slightly so that it isn't exactly the same)?Best regards,Steven.
