Are the Sovereign's immortal?
They seem to live for a long ass time. 800+ years at least in the book.
Yeah it says that their status as a Channeler makes them immortal.
They can still die in the game, if they die while fighting in hostile territory they're gone forever. Or if they die without owning a city.
Would be nice if they atleast died of old age so the dynasty system would matter more
Having your created character, who you (hopefully) invested time and thought into creating just roll over and die 50 turns into the game from old age just doesn't sit well with me.
Yeah a big "no thanks" on the main character dying of old age. The dynasty system should provide new rulers if the first one dies, but not replace him/her naturally.
The method of death wasn't really the important point.. its the fact that you have heirs who can never fufill the roll of ruler at this point. Only reason i suggested death from old age is death from combat = loss at this point.. figured it would be a much smaller request. And if they live 600 years it certainly wont be 5 turns in. But again the major point was dynasty system while interesting seems rather pointless if heirs can never become ruler.
Still, the point stands that your main character, who you hopefully invested time into improving, would suddenly die and would be replaced by some crappy offspring who you never specced or anything. They could be the most horrible character ever, but you'd be stuck with them, whether they suit your playing style or not. Say I had a mage-type character, and he suddenly dies. I'm left with my child, who is a good warrior but a crappy mage. I want him to be a mage, but the game practically slpas me in the face and says "No, you will have a warrior Sovereign and you WILL like it!"
Well we're all on the same page. Nobody wants the main character to die OF OLD AGE. However, if he does end up dying, it should be possible to replace him with the replacements produced.
EDITED** 550 turns in my sov is 35.. so idk maybe they do die eventually lol would have to be like 10k or so turns in so i doubt anyone has played long enough to find out.
In Frogboy's timeline for Elemental:
Morrigan’s quest for immortality fails; he dies.
Curgen ascends the throne once more.
So no, immortal they are not; however they do live a really long time.
Given that mana is going global, this problem could be solved by abstracting the human player as the puppeteer in control of a Kingdom and its Sovereign. Sort of like the way a Sultan outranks a King.
So, let the Sovereigns die of any cause, even very old age, and let their heirs take over (but possibly let you choose who takes the throne).
Let us choose or let them take over in proper succession order.. you can always arrange an "accident" for ones you don't like. Downside to not letting the proper successor retain power would be losing more heirs to get to the one you want. TBH i wouldn't care either way. Its just when i see a dynasty system i think a succession of rulers.. not popping out kids to trade for diplomatic gains. Maybe other people have a different view on what a dynasty is? I tend to think of stuff in a literal sense so maybe its supposed to just be an abstraction of a dynasty ?
Well, they quite often wipe out entire civilizations and use weapons of mass destruction, plus incest doesn't seem to be a problem in their books. So in answer to your question, I'd have to say yes, the Sovereigns are immoral.
I think a succession system would add a lot of depth to the game. Arranged marriages would matter a lot more than just a relations boost or for the genetic traits, marriages could have political ramifications. If the heir to a kingdom/empire belongs to another dynasty the two nations could form a personal union (automatic alliance I guess, or maybe something more). If the heir to a nation is the sovereign of another nation, the first nation could get inherited by the second. Or there could be succession wars between two or more erstwhile allies. It would also help shake up stagnant power balances or allow for conquest without warfare. The point is the dynasty system would actually matter more than as just a way to get free casters and relations bonuses.
I can't remeber where, but I do recall Frogboy at one point confirming that Sovereigns are immortal.
