With Blizzcon right around the corner, the Diablo III community is gearing up for what they are hoping is a release of new information, and hopefully a release window. A lot about Diablo III is still unknown, with only vague details given to the community via the offical Battle.net forums. The fifth and final class is yet to be anounced, the 'End Game' content - said to justify the lowered level cap of 60 - hasn't been discussed at all and of course the widespread concern for the general direction of the game has yet to be really addressed in any meaningful way.I myself am a massive Diablo II fan; I still play it to this day. While Torchlight kicked the original Diablo out of the picture entirely, and it's sequel hoping to finally kick Diablo II off of it's throne, Diablo II is still the best Hack 'n Slash money can buy. World of Warcraft used it's item and 'drip feeding' loot system to great effect, and with eight years worth of development time, Diablo III is set to claim Diablo II's title with some innovative gameplay changes. Unlike Blizzard's recent Starcraft II, which changed so little about the game, Diablo III is really changing a lot. Gone is the 'Potion Dependancy' of nearly all Hack 'n Slash titles, and in it's place a new focus on the WoW-esque 'Ability Bar', promising to deliver varied and interesting combat. Is anyone else looking forward to the Diablo III? What annoucements, if any, are you hoping to see arrive out of Blizzcon?Unfortunately, it's difficult to talk about Diablo III without mentioning the shift in tone from the previous games, as the die-hard fans - and they are legion - are rather upset about it. Instead of going into great detail, I'll simply show it in pictures:Diablo IITorchlightDiablo IIIFan Reaction:Note: The bottom of these two is the final art direction for Diablo III.Thoughts?
Yeah, I don't think it will be like a WAR witchhunter at all. Anyway from the short footage they showed it looked more like a mage than a ranged fighter (just my opinion).
I've probably played too much Devil May Cry, but if the Demon Hunter doesn't carry a giant two-handed sword around, he isn't a real demon hunter.
Anyone else pissed as hell that there isn't a Knight/paladin/Disciplined warrior type class? The Paladin's Auras were pretty interesting abilities in D2 and I'm disappointed I haven't seen any evidence of then being implemented in D3 (though I could see Blizz dumping them onto the Monk, which would be obnoxious). Plus I kinda wanted to spam my Hammers in all their 3D glory
Also, it doesn't appear as if there will be a shape-shifting class either...maybe Blizz is saving Auras and shape-shifting for an expansion- Its so like Blizz to hold back content just so they can make an "expansion" with it (1/3 of the starcraft II campaign anyone?)
^I'm sure you can get them after paying $60 for the Palidan Storyline DCL which they'll announce.
Clearly they've already planned expansions, and it is even more obvious that it will include more classes.
It will probably go something like this
Diablo 3
Diablo 3: The burning crusaders
Diablo 3: Wrath of the Lich Diablo (or possibly: Wrath of the Hell King)
Diablo 3: Cataclysmic
andsince it will be the best hack and slash game ever (I dunno, but hopefully)
Diablo 3 Rippoff 1: The Quest for Blizzard's Sucssess
Diablo 3 Rippoff 2: The Search for More Money
Diablo 3 Rippoff 3: The last 7 failed but this format still works!
Hopefully one day people will get sick of Diablo, SC, and WOW so Blizzard will be forced to make something thats even slightly new.
I do want a WC4 though, but not if it looks and plays like WC 3.5
Like how SC 2 looks like SC 1.5
Orrrrr how Diablo series is still pretty much like Diablo 1.
Blizzard doesn't innovate, it refines and polishes. Starcraft was hugely successful, why would they make Starcraft 2 into something else? It plays like Starcraft, and has enough new stuff to make it new. And hey, it's hugely successful. Diablo 3 will also play like Diablo 2, but have enough new stuff to make it new, and will also be hugely successful. How much innovation can there be in Hack & Slash RPGs? Titan Quest has the same features D2 had, and it came out years after D2.
I also don't get the whole "holding back content" thing.. every game has expansions. Do you accuse IC of holding back content on Sins just so they could release the micro-expansions? Or SD on Gal Civ and Elemental? Or any other company? To date there hasn't been a Blizzard expansion that hasn't been hugely successful (see the pattern here?) and did not make substantial changes.
I'm not much of a Blizzard fanboy, but these kinds of comments are just ridiculous.
I agree with the above and I don't play a single Blizzard game.
The most successful franchises refine rather than reinvent. If you create a hugely popular game, why would you risk changing too much? Instead you refine, polish, and implement the better ideas to come out of your employees, fans, and the industry as a whole.
There have certainly been enough changes and innovations to the RTS formula between the release of SC1 and SC2 that the latter feels like more than a mere graphical overhaul. Heck, Starcraft didn't even have an "attack-move" order! I tried giving the game another go 2-3 years ago and just couldn't get past the lack of modern conventions.
It didn't? Yes it did.
Yup, same as now, just issue an attack order on empty map and your units will attack anything they come across along the way.
I was a big fan of Diablo 1. But thats understandable it was unique and one of a kind back in its day. Picked up Diablo 2 and thought WOW just like that Diablo 1 i played many many years which has gotten stale since you just click and click mindlessly. So no sir your simply wrong. Its the same stuff over and over. Diablo 3 looks no different.
And SC 2 into 3 parts.... your telling me one of the biggest production studios in video gaming spent millions of dollars and 10 years could only develop 1/3 of a game that plays exactly like SC 1? Thats like saying it takes 2 days to make a bed is reasonable.
Have you played it? No? I did, at PAX last year, and you couldn't be more wrong. The first thing I told a friend afterward is how awesome it was going to be because it felt like playing a prettied up and improved Diablo 2. It's amazing how you actually state your assumed opinion as fact.
Yes, single player is definitely forgettable trash, despite being critically acclaimed as being pretty damn fantastic. But of course, your opinion is the only one that counts, right? Definitely, the insanely simple mission structure of Starcraft 1 (even though you even bolded the "ever", I'm not even going to bring up the joke campaigns of Warcraft II and Warcraft) is extremely superior compared to the persistent upgrades, unlocks, and highly cinematic/story driven campaign of Starcraft 2. And the UI update to get rid of ridiculous annoyances from Starcraft 1 have opened up the game to a hugely more wide audience, which is actually sort of the opposite of MP being fun in "spite" of these changes.
Uh, yeah, the DLC was part of the Deluxe editions, or a separate purchase for those who got regular copies. How's that holding back content? Elemental has a campaign for buying the book (which doesn't even come with the Limited Edition), and if it wasn't for the launch problems it probably would've been made a lot earlier.. by the logic, they're holding back content, too!
I really don't know why you're so bitter at Blizzard, but all of your arguments are completely baseless and, quite frankly, insanely terrible. There are plenty of legitimate arguments to make, such as the state of the current Battle.net being widely regarded as a downgrade to the original, the push to make everyone use realID (even though that one failed), the crazy Facebook integration, etc..
*grumble grumble*
Now I have to find that disk and figure out how far my mind has slipped.
You know what is interesting here is that I didn't really care for Starcraft original, so I only had a marginal interest in Starcraft II which makes me hardly biased towards Blizzard. Hell, the only series they've put out that I do like has been the Diablo series, and I liked that A LOT. I only say this because I did not find Zehdon's statement to be bitter, and I don't think I have a strong enough opinion to be biased for or against Blizzard at this point. It's a sad state of affairs that any critcism lodged at a company somehow makes the poster bitter? I think there are some Steam fanatics you could hookup with. They run around these forums slapping labels on the foreheads of people that don't like favorite company too. It's just completely unnecessary. I am actually surprised Annatar because you don't normally take this approach from talking to people, at least not from what I have seen.
By the way, his opinion is not exactly his alone. I am concerned with what Blizzard might do with D3 at this point too. I have not passed judgment because the game is not actually out, but there are some Blizzy things I am not real keen on too. Twenty five dollar ponies, RealID, forced battle.net, splitting up games... there is plenty to make someone pause there.
SC2 didnt cost $100M to make (that was a rumour) and if you paid $120AU for it you got screwed. release day, JB hifi, $69.
My understanding is that to experienced players, SC2 plays very differently then SC1, there is much more focus on micromanaging your units and much less focus on micromanaging your economy and productions buildings. I don't understand what exactly causes this but apparently the difference is dramatic.
Being a less experienced player the differences are less obvious to me. Although I can say that as someone who is horrible and managing individual peons and economy, I play much better in SC 2 then SC1. So it does suggest there are some key differences at work there. But on the surface it does all seem pretty similar.
I actually liked the SC2 single player experience. My only criticism is that it should have been longer, and had more then one race. And well that is a pretty significant criticism. But what there is I thought was really good. I have no problem with the story either, but really how much you like a story in a game is very subjective.
Overall though I'm not a huge RTS fan, so Starcraft was more of an interesting diversion for me then a significant game. I have plenty of of RTS obsessed friends though who absolutely love it.
Starcraft 1 required you to be a mechanical beast. Pure APM could win a game of sc1.
Sc2 is less mechanical, but still requires mechanics, timings, macro & micro.
Sc2 plays totally differnt to sc1. Play sc2 for a week and then go back to sc1 and youll see that sc1 is almost impossible to play now. Purely due to the interface.
The story was alright and splitting it into 3 is a good business decision, even if low budget fanboys dont like it.
Battle.net could be better, only with the occasionally bad latency. But overall SC2 was a HUGE improvment over sc1. Fundamentally not much has changed but the gameplay has changed dramatically both mechanically and strategically. Whilst maintining its complexity and depth. Its still the best COMPETETIVE rts game available. Its not the most innovative its not the jaw dropping. But for competetion.....nothing beats it.
Patch changes are getting the game alot more balanced and its only going to get better with heart of the storm & legacy of the void.
It does seem blizard are a little more cash hungry since the activision aquisition. However this smashing of how sc2 is the same as sc1 is completly ridiculus.
Now heres hoping D3 lives up to the hype, from what iv heard from ppl that played it at blizzcon is that its very good. It may not be the same art direction as D1 & D2 but if the world is compeling and story solid it will be a good game, i personally dont think a bit of colour will hurt the game. D1 & D@ fanboys will wantconsistency and have a dark black colour palette. However the colour and lighting can make the game far more engrossing and lifelike. I look forward to seeing what the final outcome willl be.
I played D2. I got very bummed where you had to group with people to get the best drops from the boss or the cow level and it was 'their' boss or 'their' drop or 'their' cow. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out names of games where people were grouped with limited #'s of the same people, and once they figured you were there they all split, re-loged under new names. Stupid-weird. Like only played by gold farmers. And then there were the hackers that droped 10,000 piles of 1 gold and tried to duplicate stuff under lag, and all sorts of really odd exploits like in pvp you txt spammed the person and it'd lag them so you could kill them. And if you die you lose all your life's work like in EvE. Super lame pvp nonsense.
They'd have to add alot to this game to make me want to play it again. I think there was a game after this Sacred? or something? It had more questing and content than D2, and I forgot to buy that too. I want to like D3. I really want to like D3. It's like a chick with a mole that has 2 boyfriends already. idk man...
idk how to quote yet. Yeah! To the person that said StarCraft II is a scam becaue they are release it 3 times for $60 each and THEN not letting you play multiplayer unless you use their service that eventually they want to make you pay for in the future. Wayyyyyyy to creepy.
This is what politicians do. They argue 1,005% of the point and if they get 5% then then win, and you think you are nice for giving them 5% and this was really all they wanted. Or buildinging a system and hiring people for jobs for a department that doesn't even exist, then a magic problem shows up and you have this team already built to tackle it, and the solution already done. CREEEEEEEPY!
I think you budget StarCraft II for $10 all 3 games, full networkable 2016, bargin bin. Sorry man. Otherwise it's like $300 for all the collectors editions, $300 more for the yearly addons and $120 in planned monthly fees. $1000 for a game. I'll pass. I don't even know if it's cool. I'm not gonna look. see you all in 2016 on this one. Get all the bugs worked out for me please.
What are you going on about?
I was thinking 'cool story bro', my self.
