Im a total noob to modding. Thought i would try it on a Custom Sov and Faction. I found the XML files in My Docs files and like I read copied them to notepad. Tweaked a few things, mainly changing starting stats and mana regen. saved as XML file and overwrited. Ok great it works in game. BUT if i try to reopen the XML file it says error. I dont know if this matters, but, when I pasted the file to notepad it lost all colour and line placement. Does it have to be looking like it was in the original?
PS. In game my Sov has 4 kids but the kids wont have kids and im about 150 turns in, they all married off. Is this cos of Mod or just a weird bug?
Thanks
Raven
If you say notepad you mean windows built in notepad or the useful notepad++?
If you work with XML or any other format than plain text, I advice to use a real editor. I prefer SciTE as it is free and has good highlighting, Notepad++ as mentioned in the first sentence is also good and free. If you want to spend money there is UltraEdit or Dreamweaver. Last but not least you can use Eclipse where you even have a wizard like interface for XML and a folder tree in the editor.
As it is XML it doesn't matter if it is on one line or spread over multiple lines with proper indenting. It is just way easier to edit them if the tags are proper nested.
Thanks, its the Microsoft notepad... could you give me a link or tell we where to find Notepad++. Would that be why i got an error when trying to open it back up? Yet tho it works in game my tweaked custom faction and sov, but the dynasty doesnt seem to work.
Thanks again, im such a mod noob.
How about ask Google? First hit brings: http://notepad-plus-plus.org/
Or SciTE: http://www.scintilla.org/SciTE.html
I don't know about the error, but I know that Windows Notepad is very poor with editing files. The bigger the file the worse. About the formatting, that might even be a problem in the other editors.
And I am a Mod noob as well, but I know how to work with XML and Scripts as I am a professional Web developer.
