MoO 2 at patch 1.40, all ready to go! Running in DosBox? Didn't say. Just posted today!
Psilons and Meklars and Elerions, Oh My!
And the Mrrshans ... ah, they're so cute!
The 13 races in MOO 2 are so memorable. They really do have personality, play very differently, and have overall a kind of indefinable "cool" about them that makes the antiquity of this game fade away as you are charmed and immersed in a depth of strategy, diplomacy, and even battle tactics that is fascinating and at the same time easy to learn.
With such limited graphics, the developers of this game brought forth a masterpiece! I really like clicking on a star to see its solar system, and then on a colony to see what I have built there. The colony landing animation thrills my soul! Space combat is just sprites shooting pixels at each other, but that's a sprite you built and you care about it just as much as you would a high resolution exactly detailed space craft. And planet side combat too, basic but so nostalgic.
This game makes me wonder more than any other whether what we think of as progress in technology has really been progress or only the complexification (sic) of implementation.
Try it now! Try it today! It's bad for you, but try it anyway!
don't need to buy it
PC Gamer released it for free and I still have that disk
I don't know how I feel about this.
On one hand, the game was a blast to play. I have no idea how many hours, err.. months of my life I spent playing that game. It was a lot of fun. I just don't know if I'd still enjoy it as much as I did back then. What if bought it, started to play it and was like "this is crap". I know, that would be blasphemous to even consider or even think that way of such a classic.
I still have GC1,GC2 & Sins to play if I feel the need to play a space strategy game.
... but it is only $6.
/sigh
I don't suppose anyone ever released a fan patch for MoO 2? I seem to remember that the game fell into the same category of MoM as having lots of cool stuff, but also no sense of balance or AI.
1.40 is an unofficial patch made by Lord Brazen. The last official patch was 1.31.

And so far no one here has noticed that Stardock is throwing in Master of Orion I in FREE with Master of Orion II! That's two, two, two Orions for the price of 1! But wait, there's more! Order now and get ...
Oh, sorry Stardock, got carried away a wee bit there.
Master of Orion II is shared second on my personal best game ever list:
1. CIV IV
2. Total Annihilation and Master of Orion II
Top class. I still have it installed on my homecomputer.
Great game! I spent hours and hours on a pirated version (it was not possible to buy computer games in my country that time). So I bought it now so I at least somewhat reward the owner of the rights.
Great game. How does it run? I haven't had much success with getting these older games to run properly on modern computers.
Also, whats new or changed with this fan-patch?
Well, you can either buy the Impulse deal or the GOG.com normal deal ($5.99US for MoO 1+2 plus other downloadable extras). GoG does do a fairly good job of getting older games to work in newer OSs. However, if you want to support Impulse, go for it.
Best regards,Steven.
Tested on my WinXP machine and it runs properly. There is DOSbox behind it. It works fine. 4 core processor is good enough to run this game
Oh boy - this is a little rough... this is probably my all time fav game... lost more than few hours of my life to it. Dare I pick it up again?
I still have my MOO2 CD.
Well i cant find it, i like to play it again. Been along time since i played it, but i gave that game away to a friend. Can someone give me the link so i can download it for free please?
Damn it, I've played that game a million times. I've beaten it on the hardest difficulty, I've done the turbo-fast Guardian kill (killing people with the Avenger when they still have fusion beams and mass drivers for weaponry is fun), I've made the completely invulnerable super-ship. There's no reason for me to ever play it again...but so tempting. No! Must resist!
I looked everywhere and not there on that site.
that was a while ago, I think about 3 to 4 years ago on their demo disks
Oh then i dont wanna play the Demo, i dont have the money to buy it atm, gonna move soon and trying to find something to keep me busy for a week or so. Dont want to buy that game back lol, oh well i find something else to do.
Only have 2.44 on paypal lol, already closed down my bank account and taking a long trip to New York from Kansas.
Sadly it looks like the 1.4 MoO 2 fan patch is only a bug fix patch. There was so much incredible room for improvement in that game that it would have been nice to have seen something beyond that. It looks like he had been working on a gameplay patch as well designed to at least make the Antarean ships that are supposed to be this huge threat less completely feeble (I guess part of the problem was that missles were way overpowered early to mid game and the ships had no missile defences). Unfortunately he appears to have abandoned it.
