Well now if you can't take Elemental in its present state you can now play MOM again in a better state than the 1.31 version.
The unoffical patch http://www.mediafire.com/?jwy4zdmujdw
+ you need this one first : http://www.mediafire.com/?mtx3nfj3wwj
Sadly this modder just up and quit working on it and didn't improve on the ai that much. Those that have tested it say it makes it better than it was so go figure and give it a try if you will and report back to this thread.
NOTE:The link on the first page doesn't work that is why I put in the download links seperately as Dragonsword site is down.
And see this for a link to MoM 2.0.

Another place to download 1.40f is here:

(downloads section, mom folder)
It's actually pretty good. I just tried it out with 4 ai opponents on a small map with powerful magic on hard setting and I got screwed royally in the setup. hahaha I'd like to see some of those that boast how easy MOM is to play this map out as I'm on a little island that I can only have two cities on and no chance of getting off of it for awhile. While the ai are on large flats of land and already have 3+ cities growing and drawing their plans against me. I wonder how many of those boasters are save and reloaders? Or just reload the entire game because they got a crap starting position and say to themselves this is unfair and I can't win so I'm starting over but I won't admit defeat to the game. lol
Heh. Just tried it, got run the hell over by wandering monsters on about turn ... 40?50? I had my farmer's market and a few halberdiers.Time to try a couple other things and see what else they changed. (I was crafting items for my hero...)
Is this compatible with 1.4? Or only usable on 1.31? Because both 1.4 and 2.0 seem very tempting, hoiw to decide which one to use? I want both!
MoM owns. I've been playing it in class.
1.4 is more like a real patch.
While 2.0 is more like a big mod/redesign.
I#m confused, I read, that there are no TC anymore? Is that right?
Depends on what you mean by TC. If you mean that the 1.40 patch removed Tactical Combat, then the answer is no, you misunderstood. The patch just renames and relocates the respective game setting. As a consequence, Automatic Combat _may_ be switched on after installing the patch, but you can simply switch it off again.
Is there a way to make the dosbox not so tiny? And what order do you run these programs in?
How many of the bugs are fixed? Werewolves work? Cloak of fear? Enemy heroes with items?
Alt enter will make the dos box full screen
Alt-Enter to toggle fullscreen on and off, you can also scale to basically any window size you want (using a variety of scalers) and have Dosbox do some post-processing to smooth the pixelation. All pretty nifty, though you have to play around in the configuration file to achieve it. If you want specific advice, just state the kind of display you'd like to have, and I'll see whether I can find a setting for it.
Which programs do you mean specifically?
The patch has an 8,000 character readme, listing all of the fixes here might be a bit much. I've seen lines about "AI creating items for its heroes" and "items not being lost in Ai-AI battles". I haven't seen a mention of Cloak of Fear or Werewolves, what was the exact bug with those?
there was a bug where units with fear, (cloak of fear, shadow demons, and Demons lords) would not do the proper amount of damage. It might because the fear was being used against itself. Dunno about werewolves... though I remember something being wrong there... maybe weapon immunity wasn't working?
fear is fixed in 1.40a
I looked at the alternate 2.0 patch notes, i don't like many of the changes he made, so I think i might give 1.4 a shot.
Played a 1.4f map last night. Large continent..got stuck on an island. I hate islands. I restarted 3 times and got stuck on an island. Restarted the 4th but got a food/silver resource and went with it. Kind of made the game better, didn't get bumrushed by the ai and while i couldn't get my good troops over that easily i could keep my back door undefended.
Damn I still like the game. Started off slow, but picked up. Plus the emulator I use (aeon 0.61) was slow as hell. Then I "increased game speed" in the emulator and its working fine. Big ass pixels
Fun game still, I fired it up again, and this time with 1.40f and Impossible difficulty. Normally I do fairly well against AI, but this time the AI actually whipped my butt right from the start, and fought me tooth and nail on the little island property I had. Then eventually the one most powerful wizard casted the Spell of Mastery, this is the first time I've ever had Spell of Mastery casted against me!!! I could not stop him in time, and I lost!
Someone wake me up when SD patches Elemental enough to make it as fun as MoM. It doesn't have to do the same thing MoM did, it just needs to be fun.
Yes, with the patch MOM is more balanced in the sense it's harder overall. Instead of increasing the already ridiculous bonuses like city growth, unit maintenance and power base, the developer fixed many flaws in AI. Finally playing on Hard doesn't sound like kicking a spaniel. Although there's one minor side effect - you tend to get some magic items from enemy heroes even if you can't afford them yourself.
It's much later than I intended (the project kept growing as I worked on it), but here it is. Kyrub's unofficial patch for Master of Magic inspired me to pick up a years-old unfinished project of mine and finally complete and release it - "Plight", a complete overhaul of all help texts in Master of Magic.
If anyone who stills plays this game would like to have a look, here's the link:

(In case it comes through as text only, feel free to add a post with a real link to the page. My browser and the forum software seem incompatible, I can't even type spaces at the end of a line.)
A potentially dumb question: I still have a 486 DOS PC that I use to play the old classics, MoM most of all. Will the 1.4 patch work with the dos version or do I need to run it on on Windows with a dos emulator? Thanks.
The 1.40 patch will work with the DOS PC.
Regarding PLIGHT, it should also work with the DOS version on an 486 PC. I haven't tested it, but I had Master of Magic running in Dosbox (which faithfully emulates a 386/486 PC) throughout development. So it _should_ work.
Actually I'd be grateful if you could test ist and tell me if you ran into problems. I'm using one feature (highlights) for which I can't tell why it works, I just experimentally confirmed that it does. There's a small chance that this feature only works due to a fluke in Dosbox and won't work in the original game. I think it's unlikely, but not impossible, so I'd be happy if someone tested it.
Reply # 3 above, Psycho... are save games transferable, and e-mailable? I would love to see your island game, and join in your suffering! Any chance.....
Savegames are transferable and email-able. There are 8 save slots in MoM. The game in the topmost slot will always be saved sa save1.gam, the one below it is save2.gam, etc. So if someone wants to send out a savegame, all he has to do is to count in which slot he saved it, then zip the respective gam file and mail it.
Note: The name of the savegame is stored elsewhere (in a file that shouldn't be transferred). So, if your topmost savegame is labeled "Foo", and you copy a new save1.gam file into the folder, then the loading screen will still show "Foo" as the name of the first save. However, when you load it, the game will load the new file.
Alternatively, you can rename the savegame to save9.gam, and click on "Continue" in the main menu, or just run wizards.exe instead of magic.exe. This makes use of the temporary ninth save slot. But save the game in a "real" slot if you want to continue it later.
Thank you... very helpful...
hmmm age of wonders is basicly a carbon copy of MoM... still the ai takes ages....
might try this 1.4
UPDATE
Version 1.40h is out. It fixes a couple of things, including...
AI now actually can and does use the ships for military transport! The downside is, I had to increase all transport capacity to 8 to overcome this complicated bug. But the AI ship invasions are working now. Beware... and enjoy!
