I'm a regular deviantart visitor and I'm realy surprised by the quantity of nice visual styles for Win7 posted there. Sometimes they can even be more then 4 visual styles for Win7 posted in one single day while the windowblinds skins are getting a little bit rare. I know it takes much more time to create a windowblinds skin but I keep asking myself if the windowblinds skins are going to be left out after some time.
What do you guys think?
Even though it's time consuming, making your own skin with your own graphics is always funner and more personalized than running a Win7 style (I love my Glassphire). The Win7 Style i'm using now is quite nice; it has a black transparent & blurred explorer window (as opposed to the standard opaque & white), but patching your system can be a pain in the @$$, so Windowblinds is easier and more personal.
IMO, most Win7 Styles only make minor modifications and still resemble regular Aero too much, such as only certain elements are recolored or something. Plus, it's harder to install 3rd party themes for Se7en, than it was for XP.
Maybe everyone can smoke a peace pipe, shrug off the defensiveness and get back on track
Agreed, John. BTW, hurry up, I'm done......
No problem Karen.......Hey, I'll help anyone who asks, I once helped Vamps make her own DX. Tutorials, ehh, maybe someday, not my thing. But I'll help anyone who asks.
Good to know you see me as a cheerleader...lol. I'll take that as a compliment. I know you meant it as one.
Hmmm... Sounds like an opportunity for some "shopping."
OK, now Brian. Ahm purdy good with PS mahsef!
I don't release skins anymore, it's not worth it. Far too much bitchin'
Skin for yourself, skin for fun.
If anyone doesn't agree, they know where Skinstudio is
Good morning everyone! Just wanted to say that I kind of share RedneckDude opinion. Sure they are some great skiners who are still making great free skins. But the problem is that those are very few these days. Many great skiners have stoped skinning while others have become master skinners. I don't have anything against master skins. Not at all. I'm just trying to say that we need more free hight quality skins. And why isn't Stardock providing more free skins like they used to?
Oh and changing the subject a little bit, will we still have a GUI Championship this year?
Hey! Hey! Hey! I resemble that remark! Shhhh...don't tell anyone...I'm porning right now! In fact I've been doing it all day and boy am I tired!
Being a master skinner does not automatically mean that one only uploads skins for sale every time, ya know.
Yes i know 2of3. But you're one of the very few master skinners who does that (BTW I'm still using Dulce ) And i thank you for that. But last time I saw a free skin made by some other master skiners was in 2008 at GUI Champ. That's why i wanted to know if we will have one in 2010 also.
I thought that referred to me, not that it worries me. As some of you may know, I have an illness that keep's me virtually house bound & producing WindowBlinds is one of the very fews things I can do, so my blinds do get uploaded "back to back". Although I do not consider myself a top skinner, I do not feel my skins are poor quality.
Perhaps someone could define "quality"?
I, RedneckDude, hereby admit that I mistakenly made a comment that has been taken personally by several people and I admit it was stupid on my part to have said it to begin with. I wish to apologize to anyone who takes it personally, because it wasn't meant that way. I pointed at no one in particular, and it was ONLY an opinion. An opinion from someone who has no control over submissions, etc. Who cares what I think?
My gosh people. We all have opinions. Do you all like every skin I make? I doubt it. I'll admit some of my skins aren't top quality. I do my best. I do not get offended every time someone posts an opinion about DX skins in general, even though that may mean me, due to the fact that most new themes are mine.
I do not like every skin that comes through. Neither do you. Not all skins are top quality. That is normal. Skin for yourself, like what you do, don't get so excited about the opinions of others unless, of course, you are singled out by name. I could have been talking about any number of people, but I wasn't. It was a generalized statement which I now regret making.
Now, as I said a few posts back. I have given this topic as much attention as it needs. I have apologized for doing nothing wrong. I'm done.
Happy skinning.......
I think you should be put on an eternal apology cycle ... rolling the PDJ up the hill only to have it roll down again just before arriving at the top. Jimiphus... or Redneckyphus.
It'd all be Greek to you anyway.
Sooooo....Ninety nine lashes with a wet noodle. Stoning with popcorn balls. That's what you deserve. If you whine...punishment trebled.
Then make skins for Windows 98 as well...........
RedneckDude, there is no need to apologize, & I am sorry if you thought I have taken your comments personally, nothing could be further from the truth, due to my illness I find composing & writing posts very difficult & write the minimum amount possible, so that sometimes what I write comes over as very abrupt. What I was trying to do was explain why my Blinds appear on this site "back to back" it is because I do not do anything else, I think my Blinds are of a reasonable quality but if they are not I would much rather someone told me so, & I can try to put it right, hence my comment to define quality.
As for having an opinion, I am more opinionated than most, & have encouraged my family to be the same, unfortunately so many of our younger generation have no opinions of their own.
I feel very guilty that I do not take an active part in this forum, my almost non-existant particpation has recently turned into non existant, due to the deteriation in my health caused by my condition, but I do read all the posts & think of this site as far more than just somewhere to upload my skins.
It's my understanding is that "visual styles" are hacks on your system or is that msstyles? Either way I'm grateful for all the skins people have put out past present and future. And even if every stopped skinning XP I have more than enough skins to make my desktop look awesome.
And for someone like CountryYokel I'm sure he does this for some of the same reason that I do...as a hobby and to have something to do other than stare at 4 walls all day. And I skin...porn...whatever you want to call it...for myself as well as to compliment other peoples skins. I have no expectations of satisfying everyone other than the people I do complimentary skins for in either OD or Winstep. And if I were not in so much pain and extreme discomfort every day I'd be doing more.
And as far as some people that just stop skinning...I think if I had to listen to people that don't skin bitching about how bad or lacking my skin was...I'd probably stop uploading anything anymore as well. So people should just be grateful there are people out there creating anything at all and sharing it with everyone else. And as far as Master skins...Why deny someone the little perk of making a few bucks for something they've been doing for free? I mean we're only talking about the price of a happy meal...so get happy!
Sometimes I post and get some responses and sometimes I post and get none. No biggie. But when I see and hear the almost bitching it kinda reminds of why I'm no longer in touch with my real family. The WC community, all it's members past present and hopefully future ones I consider family. We all share a commonality and that is a love of skinning, creating works of art, good or not so good, and having a blast doing it. Lets not fall into the rut please. Off color comments happen and opinions are just that, opinions. I'm on this ball of rock 57 years now and just getting started. I feel like all of you here are my mentors, teaching me how to and all that. I really do not want to lose any of that. Forgive the off color comments, accept what is and please......lets keep this family going. My two cents for whatever its worth.
thats fair enough, I just my nose out of joint when people make flippant comments about windowblinds, especially when there is an enormous amount of work that goes into them, I was going to comment on another post recently when someone said something horrible about a recent wb that was uploaded, because that op didnt obviously realize the amount of work that goes into them. but I decided to just 'stay out of it'
we also have alot of new wb skinners here at the moment....i thnk we should be giving them a chance. we all start from zero at somepoint in our life.
and Deea, im actually working on a new skin right now called Hermes moon which is going to be a free skin, to be frank, master skins makes diddly squat money, and in future Im not going to wait 3 months for a cheque worth 26 bucks, then lose 10 bucks for the transfer from yank to aussie dollars.....
I actaully decided last week if I do make another master skin, it wont be for a very very long time, id rather just create and upload for the world to enjoy.
and I live rather well on my disability pension from the government, so im not dependant on master skin sales at all.

"Visual styles" applies to both the Msstyles 'hack', the signed msstyles that MS includes with the OS, and Windowblinds, too.
"Msstyles" is more specifically the third party visual styles made to be adopted by the OS directly through an unauthorized modification [hack] of a proprietary Microsoft library file [uxtheme.dll].
Some justify the use of the 'hack' violation of Microsoft's IP by saying it 'only' does it in memory [now] [which is irrelevant, btw] and that MS has not pursued their IP protection through a cease and desist 'request'. They take that as tacit consent.
The Msstyles 'hack' visual styles are as [equally] limited in design options as their origins [the MS - created styles].
Windowblinds, on the other hand has always allowed more scope for creativity, even before being able to skin 'everything' as was/is the case with later OS vers...from XP onwards.
