Is there a way to be able to design female units? I'd like to do that to add a little variety to my armies. It seems like it should be possible, since you can make female sovereigns.
You need a faction with the Egalitarian trait, then you can. IIRC only Tarth has it among the default factions.
Since this is purely a style and roleplay consideration I find it rather flawed that it tied to the same points used in faction design as true gamepaly advantages. That is true right, Egalitarian factions don't get extra population to recruit into soliders right?
Just give all factions a toggle, Patriarchal, Matriarchal, or Egalitarian.
I see. My only experience so far has been with the campaign (as it was recommended to start there) and I suspect the player's faction there is not "egalitarian".
I don't mind handicaps; challenge is good for you. If it means I can have some swordswomen, I'll do it.
Back in beta that trait *did* give you extra soldiers by letting you draw on more of the population of the town (namely the female half). I believe it still does.
It's a 1 point trait, so it doesn't cost a whole lot really (and the built in factions don't seem to be balanced for points like custom ones are).
Or, if they want to make the racial traits have some tangible effect then they could still go with your Patriarchal/Egalitarian/Matriarchal theme and make it thus:
Name: Egalitarian
Effect: Recruiting soldiers only costs 0.5 population per soldier rather than 1 (or whatever the equivalent game mechanic is)
Description: The Egalitarian nature of your society means that recruiting soldiers doesn't impact civilian life so strongly (after all, if only males are allowed to work and only males are allowed to fight then every soldier created has twice as strong an impact upon the civilian economy than if women could fill either role too)
Name: Patriarchal
Effect: All soldiers have x extra attack (I'm not sure what a balanced number would be here)
Description: Your society only allows the physically strongest sex to fight and this credo translates to extra pounds behind its punch
Name: Matriarchal
Effect: All enemy combatants have x less defense (I'm not sure what a balanced number would be)
Description: The slight nature of your society's combatants belies their rigorous training, enemy combatants will presume your soldiers are weak and it'll be the last mistake they ever make
These would be free and inherent, giving every race its own flair. If they wanted to introduce rock-paper-scissors tactics into this game then this could also work nicely for them by making it so that A has an advantage over B which has an advantage over C which has an advantage over A. It could allow for less monotonous battles and perhaps the top tier industry/home affairs (can't remember the real name) research line could allow for conversion from one society type to another. This could create some really fun deception online in which the player could launch into a war with a player whose race is at an advantage to theirs and then just before the fighting starts switch to the relevant societal structure to get an advantage over the aggressor.
Actually, those three options you created are kinda neat and would probably work to make [new] factions more interesting.
Wish we could pick the hair color of our units... Lol was trying to make Valkyrie Honor Guards .... Sigh... lol

.
Would love to see these added in ...
I agree... OR make egalitarian actually provide some numerical bonus to go along with the purely cosmetic one.
but its fine to just be cosmetic... I really like the idea of matriarchal as well... in which all leader and all fighter are women... heh
@BGH122: what about when two matriachal societies fight each other? besides, the assuming to be weak thing should only work the first time...
While I am not sure about the bonuses you list, I like the three society choices. I would probably keep the idea for Egalitarian, but give a bonus to Patriarchal for Melee, and a bonus to Matriarchal for Ranged.
You could give the matriarchial ones the dodge skill at 10%, with the reasoning that women are smaller and harder to hit.
I think having the three of them is a neat idea.
Get this man some xml, now!
I think a much better idea is:
Effect: Half the population cost of recruiting soldiers
Cost: X point (subject to balancing).
Effect: No gameplay effect; All soldiers are male
Cost: Free
Effect: No gameplay effect; All soldiers are female
Above poster's idea is perfect.
Maybe make Patriachal default and the other two traits.
Or, to avoid sexism, match it to the sex of the sovereign - thus if you play a female sovereign, you lead a matriarchy.
Not sure why egality would cost less population, you are still taking 1 person from the population (e.g. matriarchial societies in history were not huge) and, if anything, woman-dominated battlefields would likely lead to diminished population growth.
INSTEAD - have a political reseach tree that splits in three ways, one that improves efficiency (materials bonuses), one that improves equality (food bonuses), and one that improves liberty (gold bonus).
Possibly, you have 3 steps in each, with scaling bonuses that later on move into metal, arcane, and crystal (all with pre-reqs from other tech trees), but the more you advance in one, the less you can advance in the others?
