Heroes has more of a city and resource building element to it, and is a little more of a RPG heavy strategy game then a strategy heavy RPG if that makes any sense. You have turns and opponents who take there turns as well, and you capture towns which can be upgraded and monsters grow by a certain amount every turn. But overall it maintains a lot of the same feel.
There is a demo for disciples 3 available that you can try, I found it on Steam but if you hate Steam like many on these forums I'm sure you can find it somewhere else. I personally did not like it, I felt like they added a lot of stuff that did not improve the game at all, and that it no longer had the nice simple fun feel of disciples any more.
Just saw some screens on IGN and it looks like HoMM V redux. Anyways, I've played all the HoMM but missed IV due to poor reviews but last year I bought it on a whim and found it the most compelling and innovative of the series. V regressed the series as far as I'm concerned.
I've played all Heroes games except for the first.. Was on the fence about if Heroes II or Heroes III was best. Ultimately I settled for Heroes II.
Like Heroes V, dislike HIV
Hope that Heroes VI turns out good.
They'd best make a decent AI for this one. The AI was so ridiculously dumb that I actually sold my copy of HoMM V even though the gameplay itself was quite good.
Can't enjoy a game if the AI won't take a city from you even when the opportunity presents itself. Even with the ridiculous amount of cheating I noticed the AI doing, it still was of no use...
I read that the difficulty settings wasn't good. That there wasn't any difficulty setting were the A.I played the best it could but didn't cheat. That's just inexcusable.
People said that Normal was too easy and Hard was a bit too tough.
....Then we had Heroic which just mauled players....but that was because of how "locked" the heroes games are.
