I heard on the news on the radio last night there's a new variant of the "Zeus" Trojan that's sweeping the Internet and draining its victim's bank accounts online. If you do any Online Banking like I do you might want to start thinking about upgrading your Virus Protection and maybe taking further precautions into account. Here are some articles on it that make for pretty good reading:
Thousands of online banking customers have accounts emptied by 'most dangerous trojan virus ever created'.
Full Article Here.
New ‘Sophisticated’ Trojan, Which Is Undetectable, Has Emptied Bank Accounts Worldwide.
New trojan virus: Zeus v3 empties online bank accounts much like the American economy.
Definitely some scary shit here. I just might stop Online Banking for a while until this is figured out and they find a way to detect it. Be careful everybody.
I might just not until I see what is actually affected...for all I can tell from those articles it could be the usual 'people using XP who don't even know enough to keep their OS up to date' crap
True. Those articles aren't all that "technical". They do a decent job of warning people what the Trojan does though which was my main goal in linking them. I know it would suck ass to log into my bank account and not see any money there ( not that I got much to being with anyway lol).
Ha, let em try. I've been trying to get money from my bank myself for years.
Seems to be confined to Europe, since the article says all the customers were from one specific bank.
Here in Norway the system changed a couple of years ago. Now one has to logon to the system a second time when actually sending payments. That way its no use taking control over a logged-on user through Trojans, java script or whatever.
Only the first article says that. The second article says it's happening "world wide". When I first heard about it on the radio last night while I was picking my wife up from work it was on a local Orlando station. According to them it's starting to pop up here in the US as well. The first article does only talk about the one bank in Europe though. The Trojan didn't get into the banks computers from what I can tell. The Trojan hacked the account names and passwords from people's computers then withdrew the money from the bank in Europe. Anyone can pick up the Trojan if they're not careful no matter where they're located I would think.
One article does, another says worldwide. But 3000? Not a really impressive number.
It sounds more like a security company is trying to make a name for themself by putting their name out there on something impressive.
It also sounds like just a new version of an existing botnet.

I didn't read the articles, does it say or explain how the Trojan is infecting peoples computers, is it through emails?
How times have changed. I can remember when not using a Trojan could drain your bank account.
Ahhh, What!
Hey! Hey! Enough with the XP bashing! Unless Vista & 7 came with a brain transplant you former XP users aren't to bright either! So there! My OS is constantly updated! But yeah....this is something to be concerned about...I mean the money theft!
the title says worldwide but in the article it says it happened only in Britain. they didn't say how this one is spread however which is weird.
Nice!
Stop reading titles and start reading text The second article does nothing other than link to the first, which says British. The third also says British.
According to the first article, which tries to be the most informative of the 3, the Trojan is hidden in ads on legitimate sites.
I know my bank information and password and I still can't transfer money to an account which hasn't been set up in person at the bank. So how are they doing it?
the bloody virus should be named after my ex wife, she also emptied my bank account. anyway it doesn't matter if someone has my account number and password as i also have a security token associated with my online banking. this token has to be used at the time of login otherwise i cannot get in.
My parents are Luddites who still do all their financial stuff by paper and pencil, while I am 16 and keep all $300 of my money in a small safe-like box on my dresser.
Still, this thing looks pretty scary... is this M86 outfit actually part of the British government, or are they just trying to get a little James Bond recognition?
Yeah, everyones* OS is constantly updated, so what's your point?
I wasn't implying that everyone using XP didn't know enough to keep their OS up to date.
* Everyone that matters.
The first article said through emails, websites, and downloads. It wasn't specific on the "through downloads" part though.
Ok..ok...you got me, I didn't "read" the second article, just the headline
As far as I can tell it sounds like they are either part of, or affiliated with, the British Government. It does sound a little "James Bondish" though. The whole thing does really. A Trojan that drains actual bank accounts? Sounds like something a Bond villain would cook up. The fact that it only scored 3,000 accounts though points more to a fiendish plot by Dr. Evil...lol.
On a side note: Scoutdog!!! Where the hell have you been hiding man? We see how it is...you just disappear from the forums for months and come back when the game's about to come out like you never abandoned the place or anything.
Most of this stuff could be avoided with a little common sense. I've had the joy of repairing my brother in-law's mother's computers on several occasions. She's the kind of person that selects "Okay" every time a pop up interrupts her online. I could see her getting hit by this kind of thing.
Simple precautions can be taken though. I block ads through Firefox, I have my Firewall and Anti-Virus up to date, and I'm not stupid enough to open attachments from Prince Abdulah McScrewsyouover when he sends me emails saying I've inherited a million dollars.
Last I heard, this trojan is a regular old .exe file. Which means it probably won't be hitting Mac and Linux users very hard. If anybody's that worried about it, they could always install and do their banking with Ubuntu.
Point!? Ah...that was called joking. What's your point? I assumed you were joking...were you not?
My point is at the end of my sword. I don't have a sword. How does that work?
Trojans can certainly empty your bank account, but I've been through them all and can't find one called 'Zeus'
Strictly MagnumXL for me
I'm a bit worried about the one called 'Naturalamb', sounds like something they'd use in NZ...
Baa...
And here I am thinking I was the only weirdo who thought of condoms when I first saw the topic line, I'm not alone! Thank you Evil Spock, thank you..
