Title says it all. Has anyone tried this game yet?
Tried ... to download.
Error. Error. Error.
Main game has finally downloaded, but pre-order bonus content still erroring out.
I have, it seems I'm the only one in this forum without problems. First impressions are good, the Tactical battles are just as incredible as they were in EIC but with up to 15 ships per side rather than the old 5, while in Strategic mode the game is about twice as fast which is compensated by the new 0.5x speed so everybody can be happy. The gameplay itself feels a bit unusual but nice, kind of Settlers done with ships rather than people, if that makes any sense people on Paradox forums are comparing it to Port Royale and the Patrician series, neither of which I've tried so I can't speak from experience.
Overall though, it's a very fun game, and things like the randomized ports, production chains and larger battles should make it much more replayable than EIC was, I believe. Still, there's a lot yet for me to try, I had just gotten my third colony and my first production chain when I stopped playing, but the game feels very promising.
Two omissions I could see, however, are Anti-Aliasing and a Multiplayer mode, the former perhaps due to my ATI card though EIC supports it just fine, the latter a somewhat sad absence though considering EIC's servers were a barren wasteland it's not a huge loss either. Ohh, and I miss the old suave voice of EIC's campaign, CotA's voice acting isn't bad, but it's just not the same
Aaaand that's that, there's a demo on the official website for those that don't know what the game is about, though *that* one I tried to download many times without success, so YMMV.
i used to play port royal(ascaron). when i compare PR with commander; how different is it??
I liked port royale. Might buy Commander: CotA when I get a new laptop. Thanks for the feedback
well, started playing it ; what i find strange is that; i dont see other ships and i need to pay for building the plantations but that these plantations(paid by me) dont produce for mee. still need to buy good for export to europe
Why does this game look like Empire Total War so much? (The grpahics)
Anyway this is avalible on steam and Impulse...
With a £10 difference! (cheaper on steam) no sales or anything. Why would anyone buy it on Impulse unless they are paranoid about Steam?
Here in europe its the same price; steam and impulse are asking 39.99 euro's
OK I have the game and have been playing it a lot now. But I'm done till they patch it.
Its really fun and addicting at first! You start a colony, start buying buildings, sail your products back to your home port and bring more colonists on the return trip. You get to build new ships and make 5 ship squads and link up to 3 squads together to make a 15 ship fleet. As you bring more colonists and your towns get bigger the ring of influence around them grows and they "catch" more resources around them.
The reasons I say I'm done for now are as follows. Every now and then your towns get a stick up there butt and make a demand for a certain good. Most of the time you send a free ship or 2 back to the home port and buy good and bring it to the town. No biggie but as you play and start to get more towns around 7 or more it seems ALL you do is tend to those demands. they demand lots of stuff and from 2, 3 or more of your towns at the same time, everytime you get one done look x town over there is wanting wine!!!! It just needs to be toned down a bit as I think its too often. Another thing is its kinda hard to take towns. My situation is like this I made 3 5ship squads of all galleon the best warship I can make right now. so I have 15 galleons I give them 3 upgrades on every ship Extra cargo, bigger guns, better accuracy. Beating the ships and the fort is really easy. but then you get a ground battle(actually you must auto resovle the ground part vs 1000 troops now even with the extra cargo space my FULL fleet (cant get bigger 15 ships is max) have around 700-800 men you have to load the soldiers using your ships cargo space. so you either lose the first battle when your men fail which forces you to lose ALL 15 ships and then sail a second fleet in to win.
Now let me say I know there are ships which havent been invented yet in my time frame im at like 1550 game goes to like 1650 or something that have WAY more cargo space. but i feel the forts and towns get beefed up quicker than the ships can have enough power/troops to win. But I have also found out that early game you can almost "zerg" rush and take a few ports before the AI drops to many troops off or makes any forts/garrisons. but then you cant found your own till your total pop get to a certain point.
