So I finally decided to swap out the default player portraits for Mass Effect ones. After adding them (rather crudely due to limited software) painstakingly, I've finally finished.
However, in order to keep multiplayer gameplay viable, I obviously can't replace the default ones with them, so I was wondering if it was possible to have them as a mod - just the player portraits and maybe race logos.
If it is possible, would anyone be able to explain how, because creating a mod (titled 'Portraits') with only a textures folder containing them doesn't seem to work. I've also tried adding the relevant files from the 'Window' into an identical folder within 'Portraits'. Still no luck.
Advice needed.

If you just want to change the portraits of the 3 original races just draw your custom images above the stock ones (copy the "Player_Portrait_Large.tga" file, edit it and place it in the mod folder) Similar procedures work for the smaller icons, though I can't remember where they are set.
If you want to add more portraits you must edit the PlayerRACE.playerpictures files in the Window folder, which set the portraits used by that race. You don't have to add to the original texture file, but you should use it as a reference to match the size of existing portraits. Again, smaller icons are set in one of the other files in the Window folder, but I don't remember which one.
So your mod named 'Portraits' looked like this? You really shouldn't need a Window directory if the texture file name does not change. Also if you use Gimp this process works just as well with centering portraits ([Tutorial] How to create a research button with Gimp).

Yeah, I have all those, but the default ones still show - I can't figure it out. I'll have another jiggle around and see whether it works. Thanks for the help, though
Any luck? I tried the Portraits/Textures listed above for Vanilla and Diplomacy and it appears to work in either case just fine.
There isn't a medium one (I'm attempting it for base Sins atm). Still no luck as yet.
Update: I just tried adding a second 'large' one in the .dds format. It would appear that it's somehow still reading the pictures from the default for Player Setup, but when you go to start a game and chose your faction, the players have the new portraits I gave them.
Any advice?
Here is what I put into the base sins mod folder as an example (worked for the expansions too). Maybe it will help narrow down your issue.

Adding the medium file from your collection seemed to make my collection work - I don't know how.
Thank you so much - you've been of immense help. Thank you!
Cool, your welcome.
Hello, i found myself trying to do the same thing than he did, but i encountered two problems:
First i lakc a medium example (the dropbox link deosnt work any longer.) And my large one isnt in a fromat GIMP can open, so i would need the large base too to wrok with. If it isnt too much pestering and not to late, someone help me?
Thanks for your time in advance.
google "gimp dds plugin"
Well thanks for your quick response, That does solve my need of a large one. However i stil need the medium one if someones does have it.
Update: Got a problem with the dds. It claims that i lack libgimp-2.0-0.dll and i guess i do but after downloading it, it still says the same, preventing me form installing the dds.
