Well, me and my friend started playing a 1v1 yesterday and now we are in a stalemate. I control the two main choke-points on the map, my economy is stringer than his, and my fleet is bigger, but every time I attack him, his starbase wipes me out. I can't just go around it (its the Orkulus). When he attacked me, I wiped out all his caps and he ran before I could finish him. I have tried using my anti-starbase unit (the Advent one) and I still get wiped out. We are already at the point where we both have superweapons out, but the question remains, how can I finish him?
The easiest solution to an entrenched position as Advent is a bomber spam. You'll want a good number of Drone Hosts (about 15 to 20) as well as at least 2 mid-level Halcyons (TK push and Adept Drone Anima), all heavily laden with bombers. If your enemy has a significant number of fighters, then you will need some fighters of your own (and flak, too) to clear the skies before you launch your bombers. If you have the resources to spare after building the basic bunker-busting fleet, a Rapture with Concentration Aura will give your fighters and bombers a nice damage boost.
You want to kite around the edge of the grav well and let your bombers kill the Orky. Don't face it head on. If he has hangars with Phasic Trap, then you need to micro your bombers so that they aren't all caught at once. Keep them spread out.
As always when playing Advent, you'll benefit from fleet diversity. Go bomber heavy, but don't be without some Illums, Guardians, and a Mothership.
Anti-structure cruisers have a hard time with the Orky, because it can chase them down. Starfish are pretty useless in general though, so you really shouldn't build very many (if any!).
Thanks. I already have a pretty big fleet with a rapture, plenty of illums, and four guardians. I lost my mothership on my first attempt at taking down that planet. I always knew that the advent had something special as far as strikecraft, but I held off building them because my lines were in a plasma storm. Thanks, time to go finish him off
Is that volcanic any less fortified? A sudden shift to the other front might allow you to make some headway. Just make sure to leave a fully upgrade starbase of your own in that ionic storm (they are great for starbases as bombers can't be deployed), as well as some ships in reserve. Otherwise, I would use bombers if possible to take out the orky, though that will be hard with his large fleet there. As milo said don't bother with the advent antistructure crusier against the vasari.
Orkulus is one of the nastier starbases because it can move, but it actually is the weakest of the lot when it comes to a straight shootout, and a significantly large fleet can beat it by sheer attrition. The Advent anti-structure cruiser is crap, particularly against the Orkulus, don't use it. Instead, bring a huge force of destras or illuminators, backed up by bombers. Use guardians with shield projection and back them up with a Progenitor or two with shield restore. A Radiance with detonate antimatter would be a good idea if he has deflectors or debris vortex. With about 1000 command in units, you should be able to topple that starbase by sheer brute force. Be sure to remove any repair platforms before you start to work on it.
Alternately, you can go pure bomber and just stay out of weapons range of the Orkulus. Your units are faster than the starbase, so it will never catch up and your bombers will eventually pelt it to death (a good 50 squads minimum to make this timely).
You could also try to get in under his skin. The Orkulus isn't that fast, so you should be able to just run past it and hit his homeworld directly. Raze enough of his planets and his economy will collapse. As Gaofan already mentioned, going through that pirate base and hitting the volcanic might be another approach.
Well, I put these strategies to use. I killed his starbase but his fleet took me out afterwards. When I just went past his starbase, I found another, just as fully uprgraded. After scout probing, I found that all of his planets have starbases that are fully upgraded. Should I just leave my bombers to take out the orkulus and have my fleet run around killing his?
I have already tried shifting fronts (and as a biproduct already have a starbase at the cloud) but have found that he has phase stabilizers that go from where his main fleet is, to the volcanic planet. He also has a fully upgraded starbase at the volcanic planet.
And, on a side note, I accidentally wasted upgrades on the starbase (for drone capacity), should I demolish it and build a new one?
Alright, if he's got phase stabilizers then changing fronts isn't going to help you, and if all his planets are starbased (how long has this game been going on? That's wickedly expensive) then bypassing won't do you any good either. If he's got a sizeable fleet on standby, your only real option is to take this thing on brute force with an overwhelming fleet. I think at this point your best option is to sit back and build a maximum-sized fleet of doom. Your empire is bigger, so you should be able to out-build him.
This would be an appropriate fleet:
That's about a 2000 command fleet, and if you threw that at his starbase it would simply be overwhelmed. If you go the destra route, you'll be better at picking off that starbase, whereas the illuminators will hit harder against his fleet. Your fleet should be able to pound that starbase for well over 2000 damage per second, and even after armour and shield mitigation that should still be enough punch to take down the starbase.
For a more strike-craft based fleet, try this:
Again, that's about 2000 command, and this one will hit very hard with about 150 squads of strike craft. Use repulse to keep his fleet off your tail (sacrifice a few guardians if necessary, use repulse to block the enemy's pursuit) and smack him hard with your bombers. If you have mostly bombers (120 squads, let's say) you're hitting for about the same amount of damage as the fleet above but you have a lot more mobility with those strike craft. On the flip side, you're a bit more fragile and don't have much tanking power.
If you hit with a sufficiently large fleet and punch out any of his planets, it should cause his entire empire to fold since his tiny economy won't be able to sustain those kinds of losses. Seriously, though, I'm surprised he can afford all this on a measly 6-planet empire. With an empire that small, labs and factories are probably taking up nearly half his logistics space.
What does his fleet consist of? Is he carrier heavy? Assailants? Enforcers?
If he has every world fortified and Phase Stabilizers out, then you're just going to have to grind him down one world at a time. You can't really hit-and-run around his empire if he's got Orkys and stabilizers everywhere.
Build your fleet to counter his, but with the addition of enough bombers (or Illums or Destras, your choice) to handle his SB as well.
This is easier than it might initially seem when playing as Advent, as long as he doesn't have too many assailants. The tier 5 skill for Guardians (Repulse) is extremely useful in situations like this. Careful use of Repulse can keep his fleet away from yours long enough for you to kill the SB. After it's down, you can take on his fleet. Make sure you have plenty of Guardians, though. Keep several with your fleet to help tank damage (and a Mothership or two with shield regen), and use the others to keep his fleet away. An Illum- or Destra-based fleet would work best for this approach.
As Darvin noted, a Radiance is a great asset if you're taking the Orky head-on. Detonate Antimatter shuts down both Debris Vortex and Frontal Shield.
If you have extra resources, yes, you should rebuild the SB. SC capacity is useless in a plasma storm. Focus on your fleet first, though.
EDIT
Darvin beat me to it, and with a nice breakdown of options to boot. Good advice there.
wheres your friend? i want to give him some hints... lolz.
subverters! overseers! phasic trap! (ya, you just TRY and take down that starbase!) you have a kostura you say? fire it on the world farthest from his fleet, jump there, kill his shit, and use your maruader (or colonize and build a phase stablizer or put the phase stabalizer upgrade on your stabase) to jump back when he comes to chase you! (build a starbase the second you finish warping to his planet,
Well, after ten hours of gameplay, I had taken two of his planets but only as a Pyrrhic victory. Most of my fleet was gone, and his economy was collapsing. We called it a draw. I did take down the starbase, and destroy his fleet, but once I took his planet he Kostura'd me to death, but I destroyed most of his weapons labs so that stopped that.
This was a fail.
Its never a fail if you learned from it
