So I've been trying to run Dwarf Fortress on my mac book, and unfortunately I can't "-" or "+" inventory at the beginning? The buttons don't seem to work and it's really annoying and i need help otherwise my dwarves are gonna die!
Sadly, I don't use Mac, so I can't really help you there. But yeah, there are quite a lot of Dwarf Fortress players around here, I think. It should be up the Stardock fans alley.
Yes I am [was] a DF player. I am still waiting for the new version to be released. It's an awesome game, but oh boy...the development is hellish slow.
Btw, while we are talking about DF...I used to be a regular poster on the official DF forum, but I abandoned it months ago, because it's getting totally FUBAR imo. I blame it on the new posters actually. The old DF community was decent, but in the last 2 years, the overall quality of the official forum is on downhill. Anyone else have noticed this?
[PS. I think that most of the posters @ Something Awful would agree...]
I have read about this game, but I decieded against it.
1. A steeep learning curve
2. Its not finished
3. According to what I read I would need to install a mod to get the "graphics" better
4. A steeep learning curve
5. Its extremely deep. Thats a good thing if its a game that slowly gets you into trouble (like CIV IV), but bad if you have no idea where to start
6. See point 1 and 4

Nihilist cancels write post: Checking Dev_now
the graphics put me off from playing it, a bit hard to tell whats what.
Awesome game, TBH, I've been playing for a while, but haven't had time recently. I have to finish up Silverwaters, my underwater fortress, one of these days...
Just redefine the keybindings, there's an option for that somewhere in the menus. If you can't find that one, edit data\init\interface.txt ( looking for SECONDSCROLL_UP and _DOWN entries ).
Eh I played it for several months, but even after learning that interface...it was still a pain in the ass. Stardock should totally hire that guy though. If that happened my (gaming) life would be complete.
stardock might not since they don't want to buyout everyone.
Heh, then they should publish his game for him, and get him an art director. I just started playing today. The keybindings are not laptop friendly; the +/- are those from the numpad, not the ones in the number row. I ended up switching to a computer that had a keyboard with a numpad without trying very hard to fix the issue. I think the dwarf fortress wiki might have some info about the problem though.
Good luck with the game! I'm certainly going to need it, I already managed to flood the basement.
Haha, yeah...but Toady is a quite special person you know. Either way, Dwarf Fortress v1.0 would be the best strategy/RPG game ever, that is for sure.
Tarn Adams, the developer, has made it very clear that he doesn't intend to relinquish any kind of creative control over Dwarf Fortress, nor does he wish to switch away from it being freeware. So, short of a studio giving him a grant just to encourage his awesomeness, we're not going to see any drastic changes to the development model/team.
He has said he'd entertain the idea of working at a studio on unrelated projects if he needed the money, but that would mean cutting into DF dev time and is undesirable.
I found a possible solution for you. There's a "Complete and Utter Newby Tutorial" which had a link to a packaged version of dwarf fortress (a couple of updates old, but it works) that also includes a graphics set (so you aren't just staring at punctuation marks the whole time) and a dwarf task manager. I ended up not using the numpad at all with that version, since alt+up/down arrow controls the sub-menus instead of the +/-. I just remapped the z axis movement keys from the default settings. I don't know if I wasn't using the numpad because of a different key configuration or because the tutorial didn't mention it, though, so maybe you don't need the other version.
Relevant quote, I think:
Also, on the embarkation screen, alt+down arrow makes a skill/inventory item go up, for some reason (I think). That might be your real problem. Hope that helped! Let me know if you have more trouble.
Also, for everybody put off by the ASCII graphics, see the above tutorial to get a graphics/tileset or check out the dwarf fortress wiki. Anybody who likes the more detailed type of city-simulator where you actually have an inventory (more like Anno 1404/Dawn of Discovery, less like SimCity) should at least try the game out. I've been playing it for the past few days, since I'm on spring break, and it's awesome. Just don't trade wood to the elves.
Yeh, tilesets are good to have. Hopefully Toady will work on the Presentation Arc soon enough -> gfx/text separation + interface improvements.
found this out the hard way.
Also, goblins are incredibly annoying little buggers, keep storming my fort and killing four dwarves at a time. Finally had to have my mayor come up from underground and kick their @sses with a pickaxe.
The only thing I wish the game could portray better would be what your dwarves are wearing and storage of items. I want to be able to see easily what a dwarf is equipped with. I also don't want clothes of goblins strewn all over my fort A better UI, not necessarily better graphics, would make this easier. Graphics aren't important to me, UI is...
I love the trading in this game the most. Everytime a caravan shows up at your gate there is a little bit of excitement and relief. You can get the items you need and get rid of useless items you don't need. Value of an item seems to be based on necessity, sometimes a nation might be willing to trade you more for something if they really want or need it. It's based on want and need, not some random coin value based on nothing. It's what I was trying to say in my post here.
I haven't gotten to the part where a dwarven economy is started, but I am looking forward to figuring out more about this game. It is so in depth without being overwhelming. I am really kinda sad Elemental won't be this game with better graphics, because I think this is the sort of game people everywhere need to play. I think its the future of gaming in that its immersive and pulls you into a world and doesn't make you want to let it go.
I play DF, check the dev updates daily, and post somewhat regularly on the forums. It ate my entire summer break because it is simply that awesome. Currently though I haven't played it in a few months since I don't want to get too burned out right before the next amazingly epic release. Over a year and a half of Tarn Adams dev time in the update.
As for graphics, I personally think they would detract from the overall feel of the game. The game thrives on imagination and emergent storytelling, neither of which have as much leeway when the graphics are crysis-like. IMO anyone who is put off by the graphics needs to re-look their gaming philosophy: do you want the latest shinies which you will toss in a month or incredibly deep gameplay which will last for years? Also, read the Hall of Legends stories. My personal favorite: http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=15572.0 as well as the more infamous Boatmurdered: http://lparchive.org/LetsPlay/Boatmurdered/
The learning curve is more of a learning cliff face, but after a week without closing the wiki, you will get the hang of it to the point where eventually you will have the hotkeys memorized for most tasks. In general the UI sucks and really doesn't do the rest of the game justice. But once you get over that fact and learn to live with it, you will have an awesome time making cat biscuits, building magma cannons, tossing goblins off a 10 story tower into a 20 story pit, and depressed homicidal dwarves who send your fortress spiraling into oblivion. And remember, the game's motto is "Losing is Fun."
On a side note, the Creative Projects sub-forum is crawling with programmers and/or people who love insanely detailed games, and as such is always full of win. Including of course my own little thread detailing my exploits while teaching myself DirectX 9 http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=47915.0
Edit from a day after initial post: YAY!!! Early test version of DF2010 to be released next week! And although as buggy as the first iteration of a Stardock Beta, it shall be quite fun to play.
Yeah it will be a bugfest for sure Either way, I realized something. DF v1.0 won't be released ever. It took 1.5 years for Toady to release the next version, which is still extremely far from v1.0
I currently can't play dwarf fortress because of how I anticipate how awesome the version after it will be.
The top three lines of that with the picture of the dwarf would make a great t-shirt
Any useful link about it?
By the way, give me a "visual" version of this game, with a proper mouse support, GUI, and so on, and I will be an happy gamer for YEARS.
Awesome! you'll have to make a link in a post when it comes out!
and yes, yes it would
